This is My Design

One of my bestest friends ever has completed several years of an insane schedule of schooling + two jobs to earn a Masters and is now moving on to a residency far far away. My wife and I had our schedule open up, and we're now hosting a last minute dinner on Tuesday. Help me plan the most over-the-top meal possible in less than 48 hours. [more inside]

Eat it or not: Expired fish stock edition

I have two unopened jars of commercially prepared fish stock. Expiration date April 2013. I planned to make seafood bisque as part of a special dinner tonight and will seriously disappoint someone if I don't (and don't have time to buy more stock.) But food poisoning ain't festive. Eat, or forget the bisque, baby? [more inside]

I would probably just eat albacore for every meal if I didn't think it would kill me

I eat a lot of fish. Since I took over dinner duties for myself and my SO, I've been thinking about the health risks and environmental impact of the stuff we eat. I need some help figuring out the risks of stuff like mercury and the environmental impact of fishing, particularly as compared to eating chicken and pork, which are our other main meat sources. Can anyone recommend a Japanese restaurant with equally strong sushi and non-sushi menus for a sushi first-timer?

NYC-foodie-filter: A friend of mine wants to try sushi for the very first time. The game plan is to order a couple of pieces as an appetizer and either proceed to a full entree if she enjoys it or bail and order something different if it turns out that raw fish is not to her liking. Can anyone recommend a Japanese restaurant with equally strong sushi and non-sushi menus for this culinary adventure? I'd prefer a place in Manhattan or Queens, easily accessible from Midtown Manhattan and reasonably priced. Not too fancy. [more inside]

Why did they make me eat fish on Fridays?

In some religions (at the very least Catholicism), eating fish on Fridays is (or at least was) a requirement and seems to remain a bit of a tradition. I was raised by some strict Catholics, but never understood what the real rule was. Do you have to eat fish, or do you just have to not eat meat? And how exactly is "meat" defined in this situation? Koi carps in Chinese restaurants

Ever notice the fish tanks with koi carp near the entrance in many Chinese restaurants? A friend told me that they are actually there to indicate (perhaps through the number or type of fish?) whether the restaurant owner has paid up to the local Chinese mafia (triad). Is there any truth to this or is it just another urban legend?
