In Pennsylvania, a non-governmental place one would go to help facilitate the private-party sale of an automobile/vehicle/boat where sales tax can be paid and collected, documents notarized, government forms submitted, license plates acquired and registrations completed is called a "Tag Shop", "Title Shop" or "Tag and Title Shop". My friend and I found two abandoned kittens
when we walked her dog last week. We saved them from the street, but neither of us can keep them (she: single mom who can't afford two cats; me: in Hoboken, NJ and already have two cats). She's willing to foster, but can only do so for the rest of the week as she's leaving for six weeks a week from today. They're great - playful and affectionate with each other and they turn on their motors as soon as you pick them up. She got an offer to make them barn cats, but they seem too sweet and gentle for that. They've been to the vet and are about 12 weeks old. They're being spayed tomorrow and will soon be ready for a home.
My friend called a local rescue organization, but they don't have any foster homes available. Does anyone have any experience with a good rescue near Merritt Island, FL?

I'm planning an alumni party for my workplace's residents and fellows who will be at the national annual meeting for our specialty. The conference is at the Orange County Convention Center. I'm looking for a place within walking distance of the conference, with good food (doesn't have to be fine dining, or anything, but needs to be tasty) and a pleasant ambiance where our doctors can catch up on what they've been up to for the past year. It'll be a Tuesday night in September. [more inside]

Aside from Miami, does Florida have any place that has a culture not predominantly catering to retirees, families, or tourists? I'm an early thirties guy looking to spend a weekend somewhere in the state with a friend that's interesting, authentic, and youthful. Being near water is a nice to have, but not a requirement. The song "Ride Captain Ride"
has been in heavy rotation around my house lately. There's something about this song that seems . . . different
. I can't quite put my finger on it because I'm not a musician myself. I am not fluent in the language of chords and notes and that sort of thing. That said, I can't help but notice that this seems to stand apart from traditional North American pop/rock music. What distinguishes this song, if anything? You need not explain this to me Like I'm Five (as they put it on another webiste) but please be aware that I don't have a music-theory background.
Many thanks in advance.

Through a paperwork SNAFU, we failed to secure homeowners insurance at closing on the house we purchased (with cash, no mortgage) in Florida 78 days ago. Now we keep getting told by multiple Florida insurers that because the house was not insured within 30days of closing, they will not write a policy for it. They do say "If you get insurance on it, we will be happy to write a policy for you" [more inside]

We have inherited a dated 2 bedroom condo in Sunny Isles, Florida that we intend to sell in the autumn. The market for permanent residents and snow birds is pretty strong, and we've decided not to do a gut reno, but do want to "neutralize" it somewhat with fresh paint and flooring. White paint is easy to decide, but how to replace the 10 year old blue carpet is puzzling us.
As a Floridian, would you want / expect ceramic throughout a 2 bdrm condo or laminate "hardwood"? Why? Our realtor advises ceramic tile throughout, but as Ontarians, that seems weird for bedrooms.
I have seen this question
but our situation is really focused on immediate resale in an upper middle class community - universally attractive is more important than durability.

We are looking to live near the water and have tried Miami and LA and are now on the shoreline of Ct. The only problem is; we can't afford to buy a house here and the winter is a bit of a deal breaker. Thinking of moving to the West coast of Florida for the water and the warmth and would love to hear anyone's experience of this area. We have thought of Sarasota and would be open to other cities or large towns. We are both active, still working, (self employed) very liberal and interested in great food and a community of interesting people. We couldn't be somewhere where everyone is retired.

Hi there! My fiancee and I are looking to get married in Florida in either the spring or fall (hopefully when it’s not boiling hot). We plan to invite about 200 people and we’re looking for a venue where we can have both the ceremony and the reception (and if it were a hotel as well, all the better). We’re looking for someplace within a 45-minute drive of Boca Raton, so we’re talking about places like Delray Beach, Boca del Mar, Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach all the way down to Fort Lauderdale. (There may be other places nearby besides the ones I’ve listed.) The trick is, we’re looking for an INDOOR venue that’s more than just four solid walls. Ideally we’d like something with lots of windows and a view, and maybe even a patio. If anyone has any ideas, we’d be very grateful. TripAdvisor or Yelp links are *especially* welcome. Thanks everyone! Much obliged to MetaFilter!

Misterben, my husband, is the sole beneficiary of the estate of his late grandmother, who died over twelve years ago. Last month, it came to light that his grandmother had a life insurance policy, and the insurer sent a check to Misterben's cousin D (his grandmother's niece, and the executor of the estate). Cousin D was unable to cash the check because it was made out in the name of the grandmother's estate. Neither the cousin nor Mr B have a copy of the will to prove that D is in fact the executor, since it was so long ago. The estate was too small to have gone into probate court, and neither Mr B nor cousin D remember the name of the lawyer who handled it.
What can Mr B and/or his cousin do that would enable them to get the check cashed? The estate was in Florida, D lives in South Carolina, and Mr B lives in Washington state. There are no personal issues between Mr B and his cousin, and the cousin is happy to pass along the money once she can cash the check. It is a not huge but not insignificant amount, so he does not want to let it go.
