A fire broke out in my apartment early Sunday morning. Thankfully, my cat and I both escaped (we both were treated for smoke inhalation) and I had a neighbor call 911. Now I have a ton of things to do as I try to move forward, and I'm hoping some of you know of helpful resources and ideas. ( The Red Cross is taking care of my immediate needs.) More info below. Moved recently. The house ADT system already installed. Don't like ADT - what are my options? [more inside]
A Facebook friend posted this comic panel on my wall tonight. It's three skull-headed characters in green jackets, walking away from what looks like an apartment or factory on fire. The middle zombie is saying "Hurry! We must burn more buildings!!" I am dying to find out where it is from, but my search-fu has failed to turn up anything more than the single panel, with no further information. Any clues, anybody?
So, my brother had a major fire in his apartment complex (fortunately for him it was on the other side of the building), and his building was condemned. He needs to move immediately. He's looking for a 1 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment in one of: Manor, Hyde Park, or North Campus. He's a grad student, so that's the sort of budget he's working with. Thanks for your help!
My friend's apartment burnt along with most of his stuff. (He is 41.) Should he talk to a lawyer about getting a settlement from the landlord? More info below. [more inside]
Here and there, around the web and (much less) in person, I've heard of small appliances spontaneously turning themselves on. Googling has turned up some product recall notices and grisly photos of burns, but I'm more interested in personal experiences--have you ever experienced a small appliance spontaneously turning on? What happened? Was there loss of property/limb/life involved? [more inside]
I want a device that I can attach to our front door, and if the building's alarm goes off, a signal would be relayed to an alarm outside our bedroom door. Does this kind of thing exist? [more inside]
Microwaves generally shut themselves off and are sealed, unlike stovetop elements or ovens. Has this resulted in an overall increase in home safety?
Have you or someone you know ever worked in a hotel? Or are you a firefighter? If so, I am studying fire safety and would like to know what (if anything) hotel employees are trained to do in the event of a fire? [more inside]
Do verbal warnings predict firing? What should I expect if I do get fired, and how do I make the best of it? [more inside]
In an attempt to be all healthy and virtuous, I tried to make kale chips in the microwave. I nuked a small plate of plain, unadorned kale. The kale WENT UP LIKE A FREAKING FIREWORK (sparks, flames, scary noises). Multiple times (hey, I learn by doing). WHY?! [more inside]
A paper bag caught fire in our microwave and charred the insides while it was burning for about a minute. The microwave shut off during the fire, but now it seems to work normally. Safe to use? [more inside]
Precocious 6 y.o. daughter has suddenly developed an intense fear of fire. If the stove is on, she is sobbing or screaming or fretting. Same thing with the (outside) grill and my neighbor's fire pit. Logic, reason, discussion are all fruitless; as long as there is visible fire, she's terrified. How to help her cope? [more inside]
So we have a fire pit (like this). It came with a cover, which we naturally assumed was waterproof, and left the cover on unused for about a month. We went outside tonight to start a fire and uh, the logs and bottom of the pit were completely covered with orange mold. We threw the logs away in plastic bags without touching them, and then threw some new logs on and started a fire, thinking it would kill the mold that was left. We also tried not to breathe in any of the smoke and pretty much stayed at a far away distance. Are we going to get sick? My paranoid mind is already feeling a sore throat coming on. Tomorrow we plan on cleaning it with vinegar or bleach. I assume leaving it uncovered is the best option for the future?
How likely is it that fire (as in open flame) will exist on extra-solar planets? [more inside]
I am in an apartment and unsure what smoke detectors to choose to replace the existing ones. [more inside]
We will be building a deck in a few weeks, and another aspect we would like to have with our new outdoor environment is a nice small fire to sit around for the cooler Minnesota evenings. What are our options without risking burning the deck (and/or the house) down? [more inside]
Firefighters put out a fire 2 floors above my apartment this week. Thankfully the fire didn't spread but my apartment suffered some water damage from the fire hoses. The water was smelly and brown, and got on some possessions. What can be cleaned and kept? What should be thrown out? [more inside]
What does it feel like to walk across a thick carpet of cooled ash, like after a forest fire or a house fire? I'm writing a book and I didn't think about the sensation until right now, and I'm quite clueless. Thank you!
If a detergent such as sodium lauryl sulfate burned (say it was a additive to gunpowder) what does it become? Does it stay as sodium lauryl sulfate, or does it change into something else?
I'm scheduled to leave for a much-needed vacation in about two hours, and my dishwasher just died in a hot & smelly way -- is it about to catch fire after I drive away? Sorry - I'm paranoid and in a rush and I need you people to help me think. [more inside]

The other night there was a fire in my friend's building in New York City; the fire was on the 10th floor, he lives on the 21st. He wasn't present while the fire happened, but there was smoke damage to his apartment, particularly to his clothes. My friend doesn't have renter's insurance. [more inside]

Our new Kindle Fire is great, but it tells us we need to update our Flash Player when we want to watch Glee. If I try to DL the new file from the Adobe message, it seems to stall right after it starts. If I go to settings, it shows that Flash is " Always on". I haven't tried any other shows on FOX, but it seems to work fine for NBC stuff. Any Ideas?
Our school is being asked to remove the stage curtains to comply with fire codes, since we do not have documentation proving they are fire safe. Rather than buy new curtains (gulp), is there a way to send a piece of the fabric out for testing and to get back the necessary fire code certification? I'm in MA, if that matters. Thanks!
