I'm in a complicated situation and I need some serious help on this one:
I'm a Chinese citizen with China passport. And I work in the US on H1b visa.
My visa is expired. And my 1-797 is about to expire on 11/23/2013.
My company is working on my extension which filed in premium but delayed by government shut down. And this should be all done before 11/23/2013.
But I'm planning on an urgent trip to Finland for a couple of weeks to see a friend.
And to apply for Schengen visa, I need valid H1b visa. I'm on a tight schedule here, I need the visa ASAP.

Every other year I throw a Nordic-themed winter solstice party to welcome the return of the sun. In addition to Nordic foods like Herring, meatballs, and Swedish fish I like to play music from the north. I want to branch out from Bjork, Sibelius and Abba.
I have already downloaded the album from Árstíðir which was featured on metafilter.
Can you suggest musicians/songs/bands/composers from Nordic countries (or from Arctic regions) that are sung in their native language rather than English?

I work at a university library and one of our professors has requested we purchase 2 books that were only published in Finland. I have tried all of my usual book vendors and none of them have these books. Does anyone have any idea who I could contact in Finland to see if these books are still available there? Any ideas would be welcomed. I am all searched out...

My Mom is interested in reconnecting with her Finnish roots (her parents were the last generation to speak the language, though she grew up with elements of the culture). She is planning on going on a trip for a milestone birthday in a few years, but in the meantime I'd like to find her some wonderful books about Finland. A gorgeous coffee table book with great photos and lots of information would be ideal. Not looking for guidebooks.

Next year, I'll be travelling to the Netherlands and (briefly) Belgium, then later a trip to Tallinn, Helsinki and Stockholm. Are there any films or novels I should check out to get a feel for the places before I get there? [more inside]

Can anyone tell me the name of the Scandinavian movie that has people’s deceased friends and relatives returning from the dead? Only they’re not zombies — they look rather well, in fact — and seem rather confused about why and how they’ve managed to return. They try to go on with their lives, taking jobs, resuming family duties… but strains appear, and social tensions. Plus, they just *aren’t* quite the same as they were before. [more inside]

I want to spend my summer exploring Europe, through some combination of hitchhiking, walking, public transportation, couchsurfing, camping, and hostels. What should I know? How can I finance this trip? [more inside]

Long shot: This one (amateur?) Finnish cartoonist had a personal web site in the late nineties. The comics were long, and I remember a part in which doctors operated on a man to figure out what was wrong with him, and they pulled out a Saab and Jimmy Hendrix. [more inside]

I'd like to know more about social, cultural and economic differences between Scandinavian countries. I've seen this
and have a few acquaintances that introduced me to national stereotypes, but I'm sure it gets more complex. How does life really vary across Scandinavia?

I'm looking for words/music/recordings of an old Finnish song. Unfortunately I don't have much to go on. Hardly anything, really. Only that the verses end with a "hoo! ha! hey!" and it is a "lively" song. [more inside]

The Soviet Union offered Finland a land swap prior to the Winter War of 1939-1940. I remember seeing a map of the proposed land swap maybe 20 years ago but my google fu is failing me. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I am thinking of visiting Iceland. Due to job assignments, I go to Finland a lot and usually have some free days I could use for travelling. Is it worth the trip? What is there to do besides dodging Bjork's music as much as I can? Last, but not least: I really need tips on the cheapest flights available, from Helsinki to Reykjavik.

I once read (on the web) a poem by a finnish poet describing the harshness of winter in northern Finland. I don't remember the name of the poet, the name of the poem or any other characteristic. I think that the poem was called "-50C" or something, but even that can be wrong. Any pointers?
