My husband will be having major surgery next week. As far as I can tell, I was born without normal sick-person-wrangling instincts. What helpful or comforting things should I be planning to do to support him through recovery, at the hospital and afterwards at home?

My mother hasn't received child support payments from my father for over a year; I think she's become incredibly depressed about her treatment by the legal system, and has come to believe that no matter what she does, she'll have to bear the full financial burden of raising my sister. Help me inspire her with a rational reason why she should keep trying.

A very close online friend of mine is getting kicked out of the house and disinherited for being gay and not going through with what amounts to an arranged marriage. He just turned 18. The situation is somewhat urgent, he doesn’t have much in the way of local resources, and getting in touch with specifically LGBT groups is likely to strain his family situation further. What resources and options can I help him find?

Sadly I lost a friend to a long battle with cancer last night, her husband and teenage children are without any extended family in the area and will rely on some of us for the next while. Two things:
1 - Can you tell me of things that friends and family have done for you in similar circumstances that really helped at the time: large, small, immediately, over days, weeks, months, whatever. We'll sort out food, the pets and cleaning the house but what else can we do?
2 - Any advice on striking the right balance between giving them their space to grieve and being there to support to them?

I would like to write the best response that I can to her, with some links or information about possible next steps. I don't want to screw this up, please help me help her!

My step-father died unexpectedly about two months ago, leaving behind my mother and my 13-year old sister. We are going through the 'normal' grieving process, but I am worried about my family and how they will get by. Is there anything that I can do to help and should I move closer to them?

I'm at University and far removed from home geographically. My parents are planning on getting divorced soon and anyone semi-observant would've seen this coming years and years ago. Both wonderful people, both wholly incompatible. So what can I/they do for my adorably clueless, naive, 8-year old sister who still has no idea?
