read receipts that can't be disabled. This is a horrifying, non-negotiable dealbreaker. Technical ways to get around this without severing the only commonly used link to many of my contacts, and the link to the largest single pool of people?

I just visited Facebook and it showed me the login screen with the email address of the guy I'm dating as the username. I was using FB earlier today, puttering around, sending messages and whatnot, and I haven't logged out of FB or restarted my Mac since. What's going on here? Am I paranoid to think that he (or someone else) could have remotely accessed my computer?

I recently became enthralled with the unfolding Twitter saga of the larcenous wedding photographer. So now I'm wondering how many similar stories have happened without me realizing; not just the big stories like Anthony Weiner, the Li Gong incident and Cook Source, but more low-key incidents that I might not have heard about where people were lying, cheating, or were just plain wrong and were discovered through social media. The human flesh search engine and Internet vigilantism articles on Wikipedia have some famous examples, but does anyone know about more obscure stuff? Thanks!

One of my awesome boyfriend's distant relatives noticed that I'd liked a kind message she left for my SO on his wall, checked my page, saw that he and I were together and sent me a private message asking if we could be Facebook friends. As a general rule, I do not friend people I've not met in person. I've never been great at sugarcoating things; how can I politely and respectfully decline?

Since about a month ago I've been getting notifications (under the globe icon) about a few friends of mine about postings they've made on various pages. Without fail clicking on them yields "The page you requested was not found". I'm still listed as friends with these people - have they singled me out for partial blocking? Is there some way to avoid getting these notifications for things I can't see?

I've noticed a lot more 'chain letter' type stuff in my Facebook news feed recently. "See what happens when you press L!" for example, or any number of apps which will create data visualizations of your profile. What (if any) is the financial motivation behind this? I have a feeling that these may be used to gain access to large numbers of profile names, or (in the case of apps) get data-mining access to private profiles. Is this the case, or is it more innocuous than that?
