Reinstalled Snow Leopard but ejected my external drive before this. Then, when done, plugged back in via USB as my usual custom....and Time Machine still shows up, but the External Seagate drive does not. I made sure that in Finder/Preferences that the external disc box as others was checked. I tried a different cord, and different port. I opened up Disc Utility and the External HD's partioned Time Machine is available but the other part, now renamed something else (a default name from manufacturer?) is greyed out and I cannot touch it. Any thoughts? Should i now go to the boot disc of Snow Leopard? Not sure why TM shows but the rest does not.

I have a 2TB Western Digital "My Book Essentials" external drive for Time Machine that has gone missing. Its icon sat on the desktop till sometime in the last day or two, and now Snow Leopard and Disk Utility can't find it anywhere. I have rebooted, unplugged/replugged, changed USB ports, changed outlets for its power adapter, etc. It is still running as usual, nice and quiet with its tiny light on. It still powers up when plugged in. No weird sounds. I plugged it into a Windows computer and it was recognized as an unreadable USB device (since it is formatted for Mac). So apparently it is still a functional something. My secondary TimeMachine drive, also a WD My Book, is still recognized and running as usual. Any help or ideas? Thanks!

I plan to return to playing World of Warcraft. However, I need to keep the game on an external hard disk, or at least temporarily transfer it from the computer's drive to that disk frequently. When I played before, the files (install files or the installed game) would not copy to the external drive, although I have never had any such problems with a non-WoW file. I am thinking of getting an install CD for the game, so that instead of transferring from the computer to the external drive, I can just erase and reinstall. Problem is, I would need to reinstall all patches each time I did that. Does anyone have any ideas about why the external disk doesn't like WoW or how I can get around this?

Why is it that when I transfer files from an external hard drive to my laptop's hard drive via USB 2.0, the speeds are so much faster than transferring files from one external hard drive to another (5 mins vs. a few hours for 1.5 GB)? I think it might have to do with the fact that the external drives use different file systems (NTFS vs. FAT32). Is there any software that could speed things up?
