TAX??? Low earning American marries High Earning European

Okay. I have been in Europe now (and live as an EU citizen) for almost 10 years. I have no desire to ever return to the states. NONE. WHATSOEVER. NONE. I make very little money so have never passed the threshold to need to pay American tax. But if I get married to a high earner here in Europe. (we are talking 200k plus per year in salary) what happens? Is that joint income if we are married? And if we want to have, say- 3 children, in quick succession. How could this work? Could I have the children, pass on my citizenship, pay tax and then relinquish? What happens? I am completely fine with giving up my US citizenship, and my possible future husband has no desire to live in America- but I realize it could be beneficial to my children. I'm not sure exactly what to think. This is not happening at the moment. But it could happen in the next couple of years. Advice and anecdotes are most welcome!

Financial Planning Advice for a Financially Clueless Expat

I am a 29 year old American expat, living and working abroad in BRICs for nearly 6 years now, who needs help in getting my financial act together. Due to limitations of my company- I have not been able to contribute to a 401(k) for at least five years now, and in the last few years my salary has exceeded $135k/year, so I can't even contribute to a Roth IRA. As far as I can understand, there isn't really anything more in the basic United States system for retirement that I can take advantage of… so now what? Am I really on my own now? Are there any websites with info geared towards this? Or should I get a financial/wealth planner? Or an "expat" tax accountant? Or both? How do I even start to find one? I have no idea what to look for! [more inside]

Good Mail Scanning/Forwarding Service from US to Ireland/Rest of World?

Several years ago, I used US Global Mail with success, but while their monthly rates are still low, their individual services are priced at a rate that seems to add up quickly. I won't be using this extensively, just for banking and credit cards primarily. I'll probably want them to open and scan a few things per month and perhaps forward a few things on once or twice per month. I don't foresee using it for shopping or to receive packages and send on packages or anything like that. Money is an object; I need to not spend loads of cash on this, but I do need a place that is reliable. I am doing my own research, of course, and I found this thread, but it's more than three years old, and as it turns out, the mail forwarding business changes quickly! So, do you have experiences/recommendations, positive or negative, with US-based mail forwarding services, particularly if you are out of the country? Based on my requirements, is there a particular service that you know of that would be the perfect fit for me?

Should I go to my aunt's funeral?

My beloved aunt was ill for a long time; I spent time with her over Christmas and said goodbye expecting not to see her again. She passed away the night before last in my home country in Europe, and her funeral will be in Monday. I am in my final year of grad school in Halifax, Canada. If I leave this afternoon/evening, I can be there by mid afternoon tomorrow, and I can just about afford the airfare (about $1500). I was thinking of staying until, say, Wednesday, to be with my parents and support them as best I can; but they told me yesterday that there would be no point in my coming. I'm torn. [more inside]

Relocating from US to Turks and Caicos - help needed

My wife and I will soon be relocating to the Turks and Caicos. Specifically Providenciales. We've visited the island once and plan to do so at least once more, but probably twice more, to gather more information regarding employment, accommodations and basic living information. We are not expecting to replace the large home and lifestyle that is typical here in the US, but rather a much smaller and basic way of life. Continue reading... [more inside]

Moving to the Washington or California: A question in many parts

Several opportunities for my family to move to the States from Canada have come up and we are considering moving however we, early 30's SAHM and Husband + toddler, have no idea how basics such as down payments, mortgages, health insurance and retirement accounts work down there. We are considering a move to Bellevue, WA or Mountain View, CA so any advise on deciding between these two would also be great :) We are well versed in how all of these things work in Canada and are current home owners, so Bonus points for any side by side comparisons of how the American and Canadian systems differ or are similar.
