What Would Be In Your Best High School English Class?

I'm teaching high school-level English next year for students who need a high level of academic support and I want the class to be both highly engaging and content-rich. If you were a kid who LOATHED writing for school, struggled with boring English classes, or can remember what elements you truly enjoyed in your high school English class, what advice would you pass my way? Can you please help explain to me some techniques and procedures for teaching English to students with whom you don't share a common language? Its private tutoring and the students in this instance are two 10 year olds and they need to be speaking as much as they can in the next couple of months... and I will have them twice a week for an hour. I have an Ipad, a white board, and a copy machine....

So I actually CAN make money from home...

I'm looking for a fully online MA program in TESOL or a related field like Applied Linguistics, that is NOT meant for K-12 public school teaching, with the aim of professionalizing myself as an English tutor. I found the New School's program here, that would certainly cover all my bases, but I simply wouldn't be able to afford the cost. Can you help me find other options? [more inside]

Teaching English to Spanish Nurses and Physios

I'm looking for materials for a university level program in Spain for the teaching of intermediate/advanced English to Spanish nursing and physiotherapy students. As coordinator of the programme, I'm on the lookout for recommendations for websites/other materials that I could use which people may have had positive experiences with. Hospital English looks pretty good, for example. The coursebooks will be the Oxford English for Careers (Nursing, Medicine series) by Tony Grice, unless anyone has any better suggestions!

No, commas are not added like salt and pepper (to taste)

I'm teaching a humanities course at an open-admission college. The students are extremely poor writers, and have almost zero knowledge of English grammar. This semester, I want to help them avoid comma splices, since that's one of the top three issues I see in their papers (spelling errors and sentence fragments being the other two). Can you help me design a lesson/activity to help them? [more inside]

Being better in teaching

I want to make this short and excuse my uneasy temperment. I'm in Korea teaching English. Teaching for almost a month to be exact. No background in teaching nor attending a seminar for ESL teaching. It's very hard since I'm doing this in the middle of the last school semester. I don't know what to do to be honest. I speak Korean and this is a menace. They have huge expectations about me as I can speak both languages. I need to improve my teaching skills overall ASAP. But what to do?

Tips to study for Praxis I

I Need to take and pass PRAXIS I asap. I looked at the sample questions on ETS website. My strongest area is math followed by reading. On the writing section, I feel I can do well on the essay as it seems natural to me but the technical terms used for grammar, etc, get me lost. So i am looking for advice to study all three parts, especially the technical English stuff. Should I buy the books from ETS? Are there better options? Thanks!
