Job interviews, no offers and dealing with negative judgment from others

I've been job searching for almost a year. I have had several interviews and have yet to come up with an offer. Family members are starting to assume something is wrong with me. How can I keep plugging while trying to explain it may not be as easy as they think? [more inside]

911 Is a Job in My Town

I'm up for a 911 operator/dispatcher position. Next week I'll participate in the ECOMM video-based simulation testing where calltaking, notes, and dispatch skills will be evaluated. Aside from doing some random Googling/reading and working on my typing, what else can I do to prep? If you've had experience in the field, do you have any tips or suggestions on how I can do my best? Are there any prep resources you'd recommend?

Federal Employment Program for Persons with Disabilities

I'm on a low-level job hunt - I have a decent job, but I'd like to relocate closer to my family sometime in the next couple years. I'm also HIV+. I've never been sick and never considered myself 'disabled.' However, I just learned that being positive might qualify me for non-competitive recruitment for positions I'm applying for under the Federal Employment Program for Persons with Disabilities. Help me find work in the US

Having just come back from visiting family in a few different states, I'm now beginning to feel that their suggestions for me to move closer to them might be a good idea. I'm from the UK and wouldn't move without a job, so where can I find potential employers who would take me seriously and not think I was too much of a hassle before they'd even read my resume? Are there any particular jobs boards for this type of thing? I would also consider a temporary move. [more inside]

Should I apply for a federal job at the same office my MIL works in?

About nine months ago, I applied for a spot with the federal government, which was in line with what I previously did as a paralegal. I got a call back amazingly quickly -- but the hiring manager pointed out that someone with my unusual last name also worked in the office, and it turned out to be my step-mother-in-law. (I knew she did that type of work but I had no idea it was with that agency.) The hiring manager still wanted to interview me. I agreed to set-up an interview during that phone call, talked it over with my husband, and, the next day, emailed the hiring manager and said I was withdrawing my candidacy, to avoid the perception of impropriety. And then snowflakes fell. Details inside. [more inside]

Employment Insurance in Ontario

Hi. I have a question about how employment insurance works in Ontario. I read through the government of Ontario's webpage, but some things were unclear and I was hoping to get some clarity here. (If there's a better place to post this, please let me know!) I currently work as an actuarial student. In this context, student means that I'm still progressing through exams - I'm actually in my late 20's and well out of university. My job requires that I pass a series of exams. If I fail to pass an exam at least once every 18 months, I'll be fired. I'm writing an exam at the end of April and if I fail, I will meet the condition where the company can fire me. My question is - would I qualify for employment insurance payments if that were to happen?

Freelancing for Dollars

I want to know what the market is for freelance reporters to sell their ability to do stories to radio stations across the country (or maybe in general). I don't know what a reporter might charge for freelancing the reporting, producing, writing and voicing of a story or what would compel a station to hire them And does there exist a collective or consortium of freelancers who have managed to turn that into a business model, like a narrowly focused employment agency or maybe even a talent agency. Does anybody know where I can find data on both?

Can you start Monday?

I've been offered two jobs. They both seem to be stuck in administrative office hell and I'm waiting around for them to actually give me any hours of work. I've had a paper job offer in my hand for over a month for one job, and a couple of weeks for the other job. I've been to inductions and initial training for both the jobs, so it's not like a vague verbal job "offer" that someone's changed their mind on. Both jobs are with local authorities, so they are big, legitimate organisations rather than small-time outfits. When do I stop chasing, and what should I do in the meantime? [more inside]

I engaged in PREPARATORY_ACTIVITY for this?!

I originally did a few phone interviews at BIG_COMPANY for a management role related to my Ph.D. in SCIENTIFIC_FIELD. The recruiter at BIG_COMPANY is instead offering me an onsite interview for a much more tedious non-management role — with the intention of "ideally" "probably" assigning me some direct reports over time and eventually transitioning me into the management role I originally applied for. Jobs in SCIENTIFIC_FIELD are scarce, I belong to an underemployed visible minority group, and I feel like I can't afford to walk away. Help me negotiate effectively instead. [more inside]

How best to manage this work problem

For several years Small Company has been undergoing large turnover in employees, to the point that there are now a number of critical vacancies. I am a Widget Controller at SC. Because of the vacancies, I was told to also become a Cog Controller. They're not similar jobs even though they have a similar title and the career path is different. I am not paid extra for the additional role (I haven't asked). There is no overtime. Is a position change like this normal? Is it possible to escalate to HR as this isn't the job I was hired to do? I don't like being a Cog Controller.

What to tell interviewers about why I'm leaving my job?

I've received a "Performance Improvement Plan" due to poor output and communication problems. This is almost entirely due to issues in my personal life that are resolving themselves. However, at most companies (probably including mine), a PIP is basically a way to build a paper trail before firing someone. While I'm going to work as hard as I can to improve performance, this is probably the time to start looking for other jobs. What is ethical for me to tell interviewers about why I'm leaving my current position? There are plenty of things I can cite that I don't like about this job, but none of them would normally be enough for me to quit. [more inside]
