Can I salvage my college career in my final year?

I'm about to enter my senior year of college as a Computer Science major with pretty much the worst profile possible: a just-above-being-kicked-out GPA, no internships or relevant experience, no extracurriculars, no well-developed skills. Is there any way I can make myself employable in the next 10 months? [more inside]

Telling an employee they smell and it's a problem

I manage a small team in an open plan office (a dozen people or so). One of my people is a guy who, on some days, smells pretty bad. This is obviously a problem when other people need to be close to him, and it is also a problem in that if it weren't for that, he is an engaging and useful person who could be interacting closely with clients. We all like him in every way but olfactory. What is the least worst, humane, decent, but effective way to talk to him about the problem? [more inside]

How to introduce myself to executives in my field after a long absence?

I am planning to reach out to some museum executives in hopes of building my network and seeking steady employment in my field areas of Anthropology & Museology. I have not been working in my field for the past couple of years because of a horrible domestic abuse situation and I am out of practice in terms of applying for jobs/networking, etc. How can I reach out to these executives and not appear like an idiot? Difficult dilemma - pursue MBA or apply for well paid permanent job?....

I'm fast approaching 36 this year and have had a varied career. You could same i'm a jack of all trades but master of none, what with undertaking lots of roles and completing a business degree at 33. For the past couple of years, the job market has been tough. I've undertaken a couple of 6-9 month job contracts as a temp, whilst also experiencing a length period of unemployment. I loved the experience academia brought and I excelled during this journey, developing some great skills. I've just been accepted to do the MBA part time and have been in my current contract 15 months. It is due to come to an end in October but there's a chance of a permanent job coming up that is very well paid. [more inside]

Applying to jobs with no openings?

A career services counselor at my college called me to ask how my job search is going – I told him it's not. A bit of advice he gave me was to send out my cover letter and resume to companies that don't have any open positions. Coming from a man that once encouraged me to bribe employers by buying them gifts I'm hesitant to take seriously his advice. [more inside]

How do I explain searching for a new job immediately after a promotion?

I have been with my current workplace for about 10 months, and I’ve just received a promotion. It was my intention to stay in my new role with my new, better job title, which will give me greatly improved career prospects going forward, for a year. However. Serious escalation of Crazy Manager behaviour has made me realise I must start looking for a new job, basically ASAP. There must be a way to navigate this gracefully, but I’m so stressed out right now I can’t see it. Help! [more inside]

What was/is this job title?

Ages ago I worked at Office Depot. I briefly trained with a back office person and I'm trying to remember what her title was. She was the person who collected all the cash and receipts from the cashiers and made sure everything was in order. I think she organized all the deposits for the managers to take. And probably set up the drawers with the correct amounts and denominations for the cashiers to start out with. And I think she made sure there were credit card receipts for all the actual credit card transactions, etc. [more inside]

Help me find a video-conference suite in Troy (or Albany), New York

Dear hivemind, I need your help! For some reason, Google Fu is failing me, and I am extremely short of time. Daily working Llfe of an MGM contract player in the 40s?

I'm looking for resources and sources on daily life for an average MGM contract player in 1940s - what an average working day looked like -- ideally focusing on mundane details like hours worked, how did you get there, union rules, where you entered and left, where you could and couldn't go etc. The more workaday the better. I've allready gone through Charles Brackett's diaries and halfway through MGM: Hollywood's Greatest Backlot ( which is good for physical locations so far), but its not as focused on the physical operations as I'd like.
