Getting out of a toxic situation and finding the right path

I rushed into a new job after a layoff a few weeks ago, and it's really not a good fit. The commute is too long (and I have no interest in moving here, because I love where I live and the job is in a really dismal part of the county), the work is too boring (it's IT work that's largely automated, and my "job" appears to be to watch things and make sure they don't go down) and it's starting to make me ill. I'm very close to a breakdown and I am not sure what to do to improve my quality of life. [more inside]

Switching to a non-actuarial career

My wife and I are in the process of trying to relocate. For the past 3 years, I've been working as an actuary in Canada, but neither of us is happy living in the city we're currently in. For us, ideally we'd be able to find work in either Eastern Canada or Alberta/B.C. (this is partly due to a condition my wife has that would make living in other parts of Canada difficult). One Mistake Changes Everything?

I'm trying to get to the bottom of something that happened over the weekend -- to nutshell, was cuffed and placed in a holding cell and charged with an OWI. Never been in trouble before. Looking for a lawyer, but seem to either be told that they have fees that I could never afford to pay, or that they can get me into a diversion program which I'm pretty sure is offered to first time offenders anyway. Help? Details behind cut. [more inside]

I currently attend a top 2 law school in the UK (no prize for guessing which), and am interested in working in the US after I graduate. I'm going to lose my job in one year. Help me decide what to do next!

As my title says, I'm going to lose my job on June 30th, 2015. I'm not sure what to do in order to land on my feet, so I'd like some advice, other then save money (I am, $700-$900 per month) and apply for jobs (I also am, but my field is pretty thin, job-wise). I see my options as: 1) continue to apply for jobs for the next year and hope for the best 2) continue to work at my present position but also go to grad school in a different profession (I'm pretty sure this will work and I get a free class every semester at the university I work at). We need to talk about where this relationship is going, boss.

I've been at a new position for six months after moving from another state and twelve years in my previous job. I was offered a position that gave me a swell title, more responsibility, and the respect I never got from my previous boss. This new job was fundamentally created for me in that the position hasn't existed at this company in years and years, but my boss was hiring me away from a major competitor, so they re-opened it just for me. Here's the rub: because it's been so long since they had anyone in this position, the responsibilities are definitely...fluid. Like I feel like no one knows what to do with me. Or they are waiting for me to tell them what I will be doing. [more inside]

Does an arbitration trump the illegality of non-compete requirement?

I was offered a job with a crazy non-compete condition in the agreement, but as you may know such requirements are illegal in the State of California. HOWEVER, there is an 'Employment Condition' that requires all disputes to be settled via arbitration. If an arbitrator decides to enforce a non-compete clause in California, does that somehow override the illegality of it, since generally, arbitrators have 'final say' and courts 'cant overturn' decisions made via arbitration? How to Protect My Employability

A combination of anxiety attack and anemia (the term used by the paramedics was close to that, I don't recall) caused me to pass out in my office. I was discovered unconscious, and came to as the EMT people arrived. I was not scheduled to work that day, but agreed to help the shift supervisor and departing assistant manager, who refused to come into work. The shift supervisor did not react well to the possibility of having to stay in the store to close it. This resulted in a public confrontation after the paramedics left (because I refused further medical treatment; they told me to go home immediately). I ended up closing the store. My store manager, who tried to fire me once already, has informed the District Manger and HR. I was told to come in at my scheduled time, but I can expect to sign papers. What can I expect during a retail-industry termination? [more inside]
