I'd like to edit an e-book series with multiple authors. How?

The bottom has basically fallen out of the music journalism market, and I'd like to do my part to keep great longform music writing alive by starting an e-book series where some of those critics and thinkers can do their thing. I have no experience in book publishing, though, and I don't know yet how digital book publishing works, aside from the fact that you can self-publish on Kindle. Help me get my bearings. AAA state guide book, but online, and for non-AAA members?

The AAA makes great guide books for each state that will list close to every city in a state, and tell you what's the most interesting thing to do by every little podunk city. But does this sort of information live online somewhere? And does it live online somewhere for free?

As a Kindle eBook author, how terrified should I be of Kindle Unlimited?

A few months ago I started selling kinky eBooks for the Kindle, and it's been great. I'm paying my rent doing something I enjoy! But tonight I read this Salon.com article, and it's scary as hell. Amazon is reportedly testing Kindle Unlimited, a service allowing readers to download unlimited books for a flat monthly fee. I've spent hours tonight trying to determine how this will affect self-publishers. Can anybody walk me through the likely scenarios, and talk me down from this panic attack? [more inside]

Ever been a frat boy? Please help me write my novella!

Hi folks. I'm working on a new eBook, a comedy-fantasy novella about a frat boy who is appalled to find himself transformed overnight into a sexy girl. There's just one problem: I don't know jack about frats! I'm trying to research frat life, but I could really use the experience of somebody who has actually been a frat boy, or at least spent enough time in a frat to have some knowledge about them... Is there a Pandora for eBooks?

I'm looking for a service/app/website to help me discover new [e]books to read - a little like how pandora works for new music. Ideally I could enter an book and get lists of 'similar' books. In this case similar might be genre, author, series, plot details, setting. Other functionality I'd love would be to replicate the book-store experience of browsing shelves (especially the New Release section) to find books. [more inside]

Fiverr for cover design: yea or nay?

The designer who normally does my ebook covers is no longer working out. Creating my own covers is not an option for me given my current lack of design chops. Some members of my writing group suggested Fiverr as the go-to place for covers. Looking around there it seems there are some decent "gigs" that would serve my needs. However, I have some questions about Fiverr itself and about the possible knock-on effects of using Fiverr for graphic design. [more inside]

Give me your tired, your poor, your... SF authors needing a True Fan?

After this FPP on Amazon's questionable tactics dealing with Hachette (and in particular, Michael Sullivan's article on the matter, in which he mentions developing "a direct sales channel" with readers), and mathowie's comment in the MeFi funding thread on True Fans, help me find a better way to support authors than binging on the Kindle Book Store (where the majority of my payment apparently goes to publishers and distributors - boo!). Difficulty level: hard SF (think Greg Egan), space opera (think Banks' Culture series); ebooks preferred. [more inside]

Does buying the Kindle Edition count towards bestseller lists?

An old friend put out her first book, and I want to pre-order it, but I also want to help it "pop." If I buy the Kindle Edition instead of the hardcover, will it still maximally count for the popularity trackers like NYTimes bestsellers and Amazon Best Of, or whatever? Or is that too "new media"?

More reading material, please

My partner keeps rereading the Phrynee Fisher series. He likes them because they're on his E-reader, detective stories, and they pass the Bechdel and Russo tests. He likes the characters in these novels: these are relatively happy people for the most part. Please, O MetaFilter. He's ready for a new series. What else is out there?

Good designer to convert PDF to ebook?

What cool cases exist for the new Kobo Aura e-reader?

I just got a new Kobo Aura e-reader for a trip I'm about to take. Ordinarily, I'd check out Etsy for a creative case, but this is new offering from Kobo, so it's a different size than the previous Kobo Aura HD. Anyone know of good options? How can I edit metadata (e.g., author's name) for a .mobi file?

So I've been downloading books to my iPad's Kindle app from Amazon, and also downloading from Project Gutenberg to my desktop PC and mailing them to my Kindle address to get them on the iPad. And I've got a small but annoying problem. In the ebooks it sells from its site, Amazon lists the author as, for example, "Doyle, Arthur Conan," while the .mobi files from Project Gutenberg list the author as "Arthur Conan Doyle." Thus the Amazon files sort under D for Doyle while the Project Gutenberg files show up under A for Arthur. Is there a way to edit the .mobi files to change the author's names to match Amazon's format and get everybody's works to come together in the same place?

Help me design an ebook!

I just finished writing a novella length book. I want to publish it as an ebook readable as a pdf or on an ipad or what have you. It’s picture-heavy (with very high quality photos.) Probably every page will have pictures. I want the design to be magazine-like, with the words many times ‘on top’ of the pictures. I have Photoshop and a decent knowledge of it and I just got Lightroom, but I don’t know much about how to use it yet. I think I’d like to design (at least some, if not all) the pages in Photoshop. I have a lot of questions: [more inside]

What's the best tool to write a code-heavy ebook?

I'm writing a programming ebook (on introductory programming for bench biologists, if anyone's interested) and am trying to figure out the best tool chain. Ideally, I'd like to write the content in something like markdown or restructuredText, then be able to easily render it to PDF (and maybe eventually epub/mobi). The book will contain a lot of source code and program output, so whatever solution I pick needs to be cope well with chunks of differently-formatted text. Any suggestions?
