I'm starting to get some ringing in my ears from various loud music/teaching/gigs/etc, and looking for earplugs that I can wear for hours at a time, with decently flat (i.e. not muffled) attenuation. I have these and they're great sound-wise, but uncomfortable long-term. Soft foam earplugs are comfy but too deadening & muffling. Any suggestions? Extra points for relatively invisible earplugs, so I don't have to explain myself 50 times a day.
I've been diagnosed with Labyrinthitis. I've had it for 6 weeks, and it doesn't appear to be going away. If you've had this or someone close to you has, how long did it last? How did you cope? If it didn't go, what do you do? Surely it should be going away by now. More details below... [more inside]
My ear, just my right ear, has been feeling full/ stuffy/ like it needs to pop for approximately three months now, and only the most extraordinary effort of willpower has kept me from clawing off one side of my head. The current best-guess diagnosis is TMJ issues, but no one knows, and my TMJ issues have been historically stubbornly persistent. Tedious explanation follows: [more inside]
I get that the Bose ANR phones are best suited to planes and similar environments with a constant low drone. My primary concern is more with some loud environments (albeit with constant droning noise): the commuter rail station and behind my lawnmower. Would the QC 25s do me any good? [more inside]

Got diagnosed with strep on Monday. Developed a terrible earache on Tuesday, which let up when I took some Advil, but then it plugged. It's ringing VERY loudly, clogged, and I can barely hear out of it. Help! What do I do? [more inside]
For the past few days, I've had this weird fluttering/vibrating sensation in my right ear off and on. You know when your eyelid gets twitchy? It feels like that, but way down in my ear, like my eardrum is twitching, and it's driving me crazy. [more inside]
I know why our ears pop, but I'm wondering when humans reliably began experiencing this sensation caused by anything other than having a cold. Today, we are most likely to feel our ears popping in a airplane or driving a car in the mountains. But before planes and cars, and besides the head colds and infected sinuses that have always been with us, what caused our ears to pop first? [more inside]
I'm addicted to q-tips, have been for some time, and think it's beginning to cause some issues. Please help me quit using q-tips (it isn't that easy!). [more inside]

Music teaching n00b filter. I now have a tablet with ear training software I use in lessons and discovered the kids quite automatically pick up terms like "minor second" which I hadn't dreamt about teaching them yet. Just as they're in the app. Then when they're stuck on a melody on their instrument I say "go up a minor second here" and it works. Holy interval, batman! What are similar ways you use to teach musical concepts without being all obvious about it? Would it be correct to classify this as active/experiental learning and what are your favourite resources? I have frequent ear problems, getting psoriasis in my ears, or impacted earwax, or sometimes a mild case of swimmers ear, or sometimes just pain due to my TMJ. My doctor and my ENT has gotten annoyed at me going in to see him so much (almost monthly) due to ear pain and usually just says my ears look fine. I need a camera to look inside my ears to see whats going on before I go to the doctor. I have watched alot of videos of peoples ear problems and done alot of research and know what what to look for and will go to the doctor if there is something wrong with my ears. I have a otoscope I bought but don't have anyone to look into it for me and I cant do it myself. Is there someway to hook it up to a camera or webcam? Or does anyone know what camera they use in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5m8XTATcus (skip to 0:42)

I have a huge, life-determining standardized test tomorrow. A bit of ear plug got stuck inside my ear this morning when half of it ripped out as I tried to remove my earplug. Now, my ear has started hurting a little, and I'm terrified! I'm highly prone to ear infections, and am fearful of waking up with one tomorrow. It would be a huge distraction during this 3 hour test that has required months of preparation! [more inside]

I went to the ear nose and throat doctor today for a ear problem and he "puffed" boric acid powder into my ears that was in a clear glass bottle with a metal horizontal straw that puffed the white powder. Is this usually pure boric acid powder or do they dilute it with cornstarch or baby powder or something. It seems like it would be too strong to use the pure stuff but what do I know.
I have a nasty case of otitis externa (swimmers' ear) in both ears and am scheduled to fly in three days. The ears are being treated with antibiotics and I have some heavy-duty pain meds, but I can't imagine that it will be totally cleared up in a couple of days. Outer ear canals are swollen pretty much shut (though eardrum is fine). Can I still fly? How can I make it bearable, when just touching my outer ear makes me want to scream?
In the next two weeks, there will be a new addition to our household -- a baby. (Not mine.) And since it's not mine, I would prefer not to hear it. There are lots of AskMes about earplugs, but many (like the ETY ones) use as a selling point that they don't muffle speech. I want to muffle everything. Best ear protection for the job, <$30?

I need help finding an ENT physician in the NYC area. I continue getting ear infections and it's about time I see a specialist instead of my primary care physician. I don't have insurance and currently working a part-time, so if you can recommend me one that won't charge me over $200 for a first time visit I would greatly appreciate it.

A few years ago I heard a popular scientist on the radio discussing the effects of listening to music via earbud headphones. He said that if someone can hear the music I'm listening to, I am doing permanent damage to my ears. Is this true? I would appreciate reference to any peer-reviewed scientific research on this topic, if available.

It's only in my left ear, and mostly only when the room is very quiet. At first it would only happen in the car after we turned the engine off. Now it happens all the time at home if I don't have music on to drown out small noises like my typing or talking or the pings of IMs. [more inside]

This is my boyfriend's question, but I figured I'd ask it here. Thanks! The other day my right ear was bugging me (felt a bit plugged up), so I tried cleaning it out by spraying a mixture of warm water and vinegar deep into it as my ENT instructed a few years ago when I had a case of swimmer's ear. Unfortunately, some of the water didn't come out (I think) and now my inner ear hurts and my hearing has been significantly reduced and muffled. [more inside]
I went scuba diving for the first time today-- I´m in Mexico, so it was at a resort. They gave us a pool training session and then took us out on the boat-- I believe our final dive was at 45 meters. The trouble is, I had a hard time equalizing my ears on the descent, and at the bottom I still wasn´t entirely comfortable pressure-wise. I kept going though (maybe unwisely) and felt ok for the duration. [more inside]
