ER Visit bill received 11 months later for deceased mother-in-law

Last year on 12/11/13 we had to take my mother-in-law to the closest ER which happened to be a hospital that had just opened under new company/management (had been closed for almost a year until new company took over). I provided her Medicare Part A and B card and her AARP Medicare Supplement Card at the time we took her in. The intake person made copies of both cards and said nothing about the insurance coverage what so ever. [more inside]

Help my sibling and I care for our mother.

It has recently come to our attention that our mother is hiding—what seem to be very serious—health issues from us. We want to help her, but we're unsure how to proceed. I am seeking advice on two fronts: (1) help us navigate the current healthcare bureaucracy, and (2) help us care for someone who is probably going to try to refuse our help. All of the details inside. [more inside]

I swallowed a plastic fork tine. HELP.

I was at Panera and accidentally chewed and swallowed a plastic fork tine, approximately an inch in length. It may have broken off while I was using it to break and pick up a crouton, and I didn't notice what I'd chewed until I looked down at the fork. That was 8 hours ago. [more inside]

Plastic surgeon vs Maxillofacial surgeon for stitches on the face

if you get a cut on your face that requires stitches and you go to the ER is it better to ask for a plastic surgeon or a maxillofacial to stitch you up? And is the hospital required to give you one if you ask for it?

Sliced finger in LA...ER or Urgent care? Need ideas.

I'm almost certain I just severed the tendon in my pinky...the bleeding is under control but I cannot bend it. I have severe fear of ER costs due to bad past experiences that cost me lots and lots of money. How bad is this, and can it wait for an Urgent Care place? [more inside]

argh, is this seriously possibly typhoid?

I just returned from a month in a country where Typhoid is common, and I have been feeling really bad for these couple of weeks now, with a sore throat, cough, feverishness, and now lethargy/feelings of severe depression/delirium/confusion for a few days now. Now it looks like I have just developed a rash on my stomach that looks similar to the less-dire images I've seen online. It's been my joke-y diagnosis up until now, but does this rash mean I should go to the ER, or wait until tomorrow and try to see my doctor? [more inside]

Wrist pain, very likely a sprain: just watch and wait?

I have some wrist pain from my wrist being twisted, which by all signs appears to be a sprain rather than anything more serious. I'm trying to make sure I don't need to visit an ER (other major factor is that I have no insurance and I don't know what would happen financially after an ER visit). [more inside]

Big hospital charge

A month ago I went to the hospital ER (tiny city) as it was Saturday and I had some weird chest pain. Basically the doctor asked a few questions, an EKG, blood test, and chest X-ray was done, and I was out in 45 minutes after observation. The damage: $475 for the doctor, $95 for the blood test, and $1800 for the hospital (unspecified). No insurance. I'm glad to pay for my care, but this is ridiculous. Any good tips for bargaining this down? Obviously I am in the U.S.
