Looking for catchy steel drum music

I've found myself infatuated with the way steel drums sound, especially as an instrument in a pop / dance-pop context. What are some good catchy songs that use steel drums prominently? [more inside]

What should I put under my MIDI drumset?

In my old apartment, there was nobody below me, so I didn't worry about he noise that my electronic drumset made. Now I have downstairs neighbors, so I want to find something to put underneath to deaden the sound and keep it from slipping on the hardwood. [more inside]

"Replace Drum" Brother Laser Fax

Hi Hive: Our "Brother" laser Fax (Intelifax 2840) is giving us a "replace drum" message but fax quality is still quite good. Can we wait until the quality diminishes before we replace the drum, or will we harm the machine by waiting (which is what Office Depot told us). Thanks!

I'm looking for an easy freeware drum machine for rehearsing with.

I'd like to find a program that would play some pre-recorded or pre-programmed drum beats in various styles at user-defined tempos to practice playing music with. Something online would be OK but I'd prefer a freestanding Windows OS program. I don't want to have to use a sequencer to create my own beats. I'd just like to be able to pick a style and a tempo and let it go. Basically a more-interesting metronome. [more inside]

Seeking Advice on Jazz Drumming Lessons for 13 yr old in NoVa

My 13 year old son has expressed an interest in learning to play jazz drums. While I'm thrilled that he's showing an interest in such an accomplished and challenging field, I have no idea how to proceed. Should he take lessons or just pick up some stix and put on some Gene Krupa? If lessons are the way to start, how do I find someone who can give him what he's going to need? The teachers in my area all seem to be self-taught rockers, making it difficult to know if they're worth the commitment. Is there a way to identify a good drum teacher? All advice is appreciated.

Should I buy this darbuka?

I found a used darbuka on craigslist (yay!) and have been wanting to pick up a hand drum for a while. It's 12" wide and 18" tall according to the ad, and the current owner says he thinks it is made out of aluminum. It has a sticker on it that says "World Beat Percussion" out of Pakistan, and he wants $65 for it, which I can afford. How can I know whether this a good drum at a good price? What am I looking for? Drum sampling options?

I'm a drummer in an indie-rock band with a 5-piece kit who is looking to expand my setup to include a drum sampling pad. I want something that has unique percussion sounds (not just cheesy electronic beats), built-in effects, plenty of storage space to upload my own samples, and the ability to record and loop live drumbeats. Any advice? [more inside]

Roland TR-808 documentary.

I'm looking for a video documentary from a couple years ago tracing the history of the Roland TR-808 drum machine. Released only on the web, it's similar in tone to the Everything is a Remix series; dry delivery, well researched, touches on remix culture. The Newcleus track Jam On It is prominently featured as a signifier of the 808's transition from a not-so-hot replacement for a drummer to being used for the sounds unique to it. If I recall correctly, it's about 8 minutes in length. It's not The Shape of Things That Hum.
