I don't really trust that I'm getting a good eye exam from my optometrist (chain store) and felt the same about the previous two (local practice and another chain store.) Given that I'm not a doctor myself, how do I find/get a better eye exam or gain a reasonable confidence I'm getting a good exam in my current situation?

YANMFD... I have a friend who, on Thursday, experienced sharp pains in his left side--he described the location as, "About an inch inside, directly aligned with my underarm". He felt it about 15 times over the course of the day and said it was "sharp and sudden" and caused him to wince and bend over. The next day, he woke up and there was blood in his right eye--not bloodshot, but blood, like a pool. It went away over the course of the day.
He insists these things are not related and won't go to the doctor. As a result, I'm worried. Could these things be connected and what could they be? He's 44. [more inside]

Have you had laser eye surgery in Philadelphia? Can you tell me your overall experiences? Can anyone tell me the approximate costs for the surgery and the normal year's worth of check-ups required, and can you recommend a provider in this area? [more inside]

I went to a ENT/facial surgeon recently for something unrelated, and I asked the doctor, who also does facial plastic surgery, what I could do about a large vein I have under my right eye. He had me speak with a woman in the office, and she told me, after looking at my vein(s), about a procedure for veins like mine (not spider veins) wherein they inject saline into the vein and then it goes away. What procedure is that? How much does it cost? Do you have a recommendation for a place in Philadelphia, PA? [more inside]

My eye doctor brings in a new second doctor every once in a while, I guess to handle most of the menial check-ups. To my frustration, I have a crush on this current one. I'm due to visit the office one last time in a week or two. What then? YANMD, at least, I hope not. [more inside]

My optometrist just spotted a mystery mass in my left eye that's making my vision partially blurry. She's referring me to a specialist in Seattle who can see me in the middle of next month, but I'd really like to get an appointment sooner--and locally. Can anyone recommend a good, competent ophthalmologist with a decent bedside manner in Bellingham, WA?

I'm looking to hear from people who have both astigmatism and myopia and have successfully transitioned to contact lenses. Also, if your eye doc is in Manhattan, can I have his/her number? [more inside]

In medical shows like House or E.R., the doctor will often shine a flashlight in to the eye of a comatose patient, but the pupil doesn't constrict. How do they do this special effect? [more inside]

I'm looking for a recommendation for an eye doctor/ contact lens specialist in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. I wear gas-permeable lenses and need a new prescription and lenses. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Is there a doctor in the house? I've been having some acute pain just under my left eye for a few days now. It feels like the sensation is enlarging and going 'deeper,' into the bone. I've had similar sensations on my lower back and right leg, though not as long lasting but at times equal in severity... Of course, I'm not looking for a diagnosis, but some shot in the dark maybes. And for the sake of my sanity, humor is enabled.
