Learning to surf near Puerto Vallarta, MX

I've got a week to myself in Mexico, starting in mid-December. I want to really learn how to surf, and maybe do some diving or snorkeling too. I don't have a very big budget, and I'm flying home out of Puerto Vallarta, but starting the trip in Guadalajara. I'm looking for recommendations on hostels, surf schools, and other things to do in the PV area. [more inside]

Is there a dive medic in the house?

Blindingly painful headaches upon surfacing after scuba dives. I know it isn't related to dehydration, mask being too tight, or trouble equalizing as I have been addressing these potentialities methodically to no avail. More relevant details inside. [more inside]

Mysterious mediterranean marine artifact

Haven't had any luck in identifying this object found, at about 5m depth, just off Ammouso beach on Lefkada - some sort of pithos, or something left over from a war? Photos: 1, 2, 3. In a brief, snorkeled dive down, though it looks rather thin, the surface did seem to the touch to possibly be terracotta, and the four regularly placed, circular handles remind me of a pottery feature. Any ideas?

Where to go on beach/scuba vacation, renting a house, w/in-laws & kids?

I'm looking for suggestions on where to go on vacation next summer (late July, early Aug 2014) with my in-laws and their kids. The criteria: 1) Within reasonable travel/flight time from Dallas, Texas. There will be four children on this trip, ages 1, 3, 5, and 7. 2) A house/apartment/bungalow to rent for around $2500/week to house 6 adults and the aforementioned four kids. 3) Good SCUBA diving for my father-in-law, brother-in-law, and myself (all with advanced open water). 4) Good beaches for my wife, mother-in-law, brother-in-law's wife, and the kids, preferably within easy access of the lodgings. Thanks very much.

Can I scuba dive with extreme fish allergies?

Can I go scuba diving with extreme fish allergies? So, I'm taking a scuba diving class in a pool, mostly to get over my deep water fears. Now I'm thinking about getting my open water certification but I had some concerns. I have extreme fish allergies. Meaning if a fish bites me, touches me, or stings me it could cause me to have an anaphylaxis reaction (trouble breathing). That all given, can I go diving without troubles? Will I need special gear?

Help! I went scuba diving and now I think my head will explode!

I went scuba diving for the first time today-- I´m in Mexico, so it was at a resort. They gave us a pool training session and then took us out on the boat-- I believe our final dive was at 45 meters. The trouble is, I had a hard time equalizing my ears on the descent, and at the bottom I still wasn´t entirely comfortable pressure-wise. I kept going though (maybe unwisely) and felt ok for the duration. [more inside]

Could we survive a dive into water from out terminal velocity?

Say a very light, very healthy person took a dive from some stupidly high altitude, and spread themselves out into a skydiving position so that they just reached their minimum terminal velocity. Would it be at all possible that this person could survive the drop if they landed in the sea, assuming they quickly rearranged themselves into a more streamlined diving position just before impact?

Help a first time international traveler have a good vacation in Belize.

I'd like to get some recommendations on travelling to Belize. I'm planning my first out-of-country trip ever from the US to Belize. I have never travelled outside of the country before and need some pointers on international travel in general and travelling to Belize specifically. I would like to stay on Caye Caulker and visit the Great Blue Hole and a couple of cave systems. I'm perfectly happy lounging by the sea in a hammock with an umbrella drink, but I'd also like to do something fun or exciting I can only do in Belize. [more inside]

Have 125 romance novels. What can I *BUILD* them into?

RedGreenShowFilter: I've got a bunch of crisp paperback romance novels I've scavenged from dumpsters around town, and I'd rather turn them into something than read or try selling them. What can I build using them? I'm thinking clear box tape instead of duct, so the corny covers will still be visible. Bonus points for something handy. [more inside]

force fins vs. force fins

Are Force Fin-brand "slim fins" just as good for recreational SCUBA diving and snorkeling as the standard "original/dive" model?
