My office really wants to have tons of large displays up showing realtime statistics and metrics. Thanks to America, flat-screen TVs are cheap. And I've already written all of the visualizations. What computer should run these things?

I have a 2009 MacBook Pro. I need to scale up to a large external monitor but both the new 27" Apple Cinema Display ($999) and the old 30" one (available on CL) are a bit on the expensive side. Are there comparable quality ones I can get for cheaper? Would love to hear about ones you've tried.

Can I simply physically replace the 1366*768 LCD in my HP EliteBook 8440p with the
1600*900 part and have the laptop autodetect the new screen and show the proper resolution? Or is there extra logic or connectors or dongles or whatever in the main body that must also be modified in order for the display to work, (or maybe it Just Won't Work)? Put simply, is HP 594090-001 plug-and-play?

My work computer is a laptop running Windows 7. I am working far from my office this week (as I often do) and I connect to my work server through Remote Desktop Connection. Typically this is pretty much problem-free, but for the last two or three days, when I log in to the server, I am seeing the server's desktop not as a full screen, but in a window about 10" wide on my 17.3" laptop screen. As well, while the laptop's screen has a 16:9 aspect ratio, the window looks to be 4:3. Attempting to resize the window through the Maximize/Restore Down icon avails me naught: I can mouse over the edges of the window and drag it to a new size, but it maxes out at the size that I mention, which covers maybe 60% of the screen's real estate. Numerous reboots and resets have not rectified it and I am at a loss as to how to proceed.

My graduate research has recently headed in a video-heavy direction, which makes the ol' poster presentation format somewhat challenging. I'd like to have a thin screen or tablet to hold — or better yet, mount — where I can easily play a number of videos. What's my best option?

How can I make font display in Windows look better?
I recently had to set up a Windows 7 (64-bit) machine. I haven't used Windows for several years. The quality of the font display doesn't seem to have improved.
Fonts look ragged to me. Big headline fonts at news sites are pretty awful, like they were slapped on by a sloppy painter. How can I make this better? Any tricks or products that address this? I've used Cleartype but, frankly, I not sure I noticed anything change.

Why does this happen and is it dangerous? When I heat anything in the microwave for about two minutes or longer, the timer/clock display casts a blur on the glass in front of the numbers, i.e. if the display says 2:30, the glass in front of the display will have a very blurred 2:30 on it. From the front it looks like the display itself is blurry, but if you stand at an angle to the side you can see how far back the numbers are from the glass in front of them. The blur will disappear after a few minutes. Should I be concerned?

I have an old 1st generation iPhone that I left for dead two years ago, after it got wet and stopped working. I put it in a drawer and forgot about it. Eventually, I tried charging it, and it magically came back to life... But with a very peculiar problem: the on-screen image is a mirror image of what it should be. Everything is flipped horizontally, an exact mirror image... But the phone still expects the same touch input! For instance, to wake it from sleep, the slider appears flipped, as a right-to-left slider; but in order to actually wake it up, I have to slide my finger left-to-right. (my question after the jump)

I would like to display Karaoke lyrics over a
live webcam feed. This means I might need a skype (or equivalent) plugin that plays the music & lyrics,
or find some karaoke software with the ability to display lyrics over a transparent background. (That is, to have windowless karaoke display, and run the webcam feed behind it. )
All the software (I can find) to play
.CDG (karaoke lyric standard) files forces them to be played with an image background, or over a video file.
