Designers: how do you collaborate, especially when you're at different skill levels / when one designer notices details, and the other doesn't? [more inside]
I'm an indie writer who wants to learn how to do good covers. I am also completely new to photoshop. Would like to know of good tutorials that will teach me photoshop AND good book cover design. Preferably at the same time. The web is littered with sites and video that's supposed to help. But I'm hoping someone here will steer me to something really good.
I am considering moving into an apartment that has couple of pillars inside it and I want to know what the best way to design around them is. [more inside]
I'm looking for some compact, relatively self-contained resources (posters, handouts, Youtube videos, the like) that lay out the fundamentals of usable document design in terms beginners could understand: just very basic principles like white space, balance, choosing fonts, use of color, etc. [more inside]
For a novice. Who doesn't have a lot of money to spend and wants to learn how to do this himself (asking for a friend). [more inside]
Hi all. Long shot, but - I saw this design in the Garst Museum in Ohio, where the Annie Oakley collection is kept. The design is worked onto a pair of leather gauntlets. The label said that the gloves had been a gift from Sitting Bull; it's possible, but also might be apocryphal. I'm interested in quoting the design in an art project, but before I do, would like to know whether anyone recognizes the motif or knows its associations. [more inside]
For career search and professional networking, my goal is to have two business card sets for two separate functions: (A) Personal/professional networking, which I think should be clean in design and potentially easy for business card scanners to scan, and (B) 1 or 2 quirky styles for packaging with hard copy resumes, stationery, after in-person interviews, and possibly at geek-oriented events, which I think should more whimsical and/or notable. I want your opinions and/or additional ideas if you think I'm off-base or should consider other approaches. [more inside]
I'm looking for images of residential gardens that embody high design standards--websites are fine; books are great. [more inside]
I am researching mobile apps similar to Airbnb and Trip Advisor--essentially popular apps that allow you to (a) search and (b) book. Any resource that critiques or breaks down how these apps work is extremely important as well. [more inside]
Hi all, I am a graphic designer and have an interview with a large company next week. The HR person asked that I fill out a couple forms, bring my resume, printed portfolio... the usual. However, she also stated I should bring my laptop. [more inside]

I am looking for logos that are made of type and symbol (where the type is made of multiple words) but with several versions where the positioning of the words in relationship to the symbol change.
I am helping a small non-profit which does almost everything wrong when it comes to visual design. There are very limited financial resources and I'm not a designer, just someone who knows the basics. I think I need to produce a simple style guide which can be used across multiple channels, but I also need someone to redesign the web site and I don't know what comes first. [more inside]
Although I studied graphic design in university, I never really learned how to deal with the business side of things. I understand there are plenty of resources for how to create a quote or an invoice, but I want to learn how to deal with the little nuts and bolts involved in the project, namely typefaces. I'm folding a thousand origami cranes, and I'm starting to get curious about the patterns on the Japanese origami paper I'm using. I think I recognize a couple of them, but I'd like to know the significance of any you recognize: maybe they are traditional textile patterns or have other uses? Are they a certain flower, fruit, or season? Or maybe they are entirely made up for these packs of paper. [more inside]
Can anyone help identify this design (I know it was at least used on sheets and wallpaper, if not more products)? This is a design on a product line that has since been discontinued. I'd like to know who used to sell these products and how to find them. Thanks! [more inside]
I'm presenting a poster at a scientific conference. I'm an old hat at this, but am tiring of the boilerplate designs that we all use. Can you point me to more minimalistic, aesthetically pleasing scientific posters? [more inside]
I'd like my home to look well-put-together, but my interior decorating ability never advanced beyond college-dorm level. I have no idea where to start, and I'm a little overwhelmed thinking about it. I need the most basic, beginner-level, baby-steps, for-dummies advice you've got. [more inside]
Accepted an internship that I didnt apply for, so I'm less prepared than I'd like. I need a refresher (preferably online) on inDesign and also a crash course on print production. [more inside]
I need a quick and dirty run down on working with frameworks in web site design (e.g., Bootstrap, Boilerplate, Bones, etc). Online text &/or video tutorials would be most welcome. I am competent in both HTML and CSS. [more inside]
We are thinking about bidding on a house at auction next week that has a very unusual living room. My husband thinks it can be modernised to be amazing, but both of us are struggling to see exactly how. Obviously the flooring and light fixture would be changed, but to what? Does anyone with better design sense than us have specific suggestions or links to similar looking spaces? I think I'd feel a lot better about bidding for this place if I had a clearer idea of what we could do with it. [more inside]
I am interested in making a small stamp with a letter Q to use to monogram clothing items. I don't like any of the ones I've seen with an alphabet set. Do you have a typeface with a nice letter Q, either capital or miniscule? I want it to be recognizable/readable and I tend to prefer more modern fonts but I'm open to everything.
unexpectedly landed my "dream job". It's for something I've been a fan of for a while and very specific and is a kind of once in a lifetime random job opportunity. Here's the catch. It's freelance, I have a full time job already and there wasn't supposed to be any pay. After a call with my new boss, she suggested that because of my experience, we should discuss a pay rate today. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO EVEN ASK FOR. And google is not helping because they don't take into consideration that this is honestly something I'm so thrilled to work on that I would do it for free. This is a long shot, but I am writing a paper on the psychology of theatrical design (or at least trying to) and am having a hard time finding good resources on the subject. Looking for books, films, scholarly articles, ANYTHING discussing how any and all aspects of live concerts or theatrical productions (music, lighting, architecture and theater design, etc) effect the audience to create a "magical" or transcendent group experience. I am trying to design a part of a package for a bottle. Basically, once you open the box, you find the bottle resting on a dock (or a tray if you will), much like how the iPhone rests on a plastic tray once you open the box. [more inside]
I need to find a wireless connected scale to measure objects, none of them very heavy. The scale needs to have an API with which to retrieve the weight readings. For various reasons, including system compatibility and short timescales, I'd prefer to use the Fitbit Aria if at all possible. However, it looks like the minimum weight for accurate readings is 9kg. Can anyone tell me anything about how accurate the Fitbit Aria is *in practice* for weighing items lighter than this?

I've watching some vids where blow explains he spent a lot of time doing something deep in the game but hardly any players understood these deep concepts. But he doesn't tell what these deep ideas are!! What are they? I just see a simplistic puzzle platformer, what am I missing ???
My friend has a background in visual art (mainly years of oils, watercolors, some crafts) and has recently started exploring graphic design. So far she's done some projects for friends and family (website design, logos, packaging, card designing, etc). She'd love to do more of this kind of work on a freelance basis, but isn't sure how to find it. Should she advertise on Fiverr, or Elance, or...? How does this work and how do you get started as a freelance graphic designer? Any tips or recommendations would be really appreciated!
I do visual design for user interfaces on the web, and I'm always looking for new web products ("products" in the sense that web services like Airbnb or Uber are products) as sources of inspiration or to use as references for clients. Can anyone share some good sources for the types of sites I'm looking for? Thanks so much. [more inside]
I feel like I've seen this kind of design and writing everywhere, and I'd like to emulate it for a personal project, but I'm not talented enough to figure it out on my own, and I don't know what to Google to find tutorials. Image link below. [more inside]
I was looking for a comprehensive resource that would explain the correct way of using a designer typeface in a project (for a small company or even a multi-national one). How do we buy it, what kind of usage rights can we obtain, how would a typeface designer even know that one of their fonts was illegally used, ... Basically everything in terms of our rights and the designer rights.

I design magazines and newspapers for a living. Sometimes I kinda...hit a rut...and need some inspiration. I was just wondering if anyone knew of any design/communications publications or periodicals that may supply free subscriptions to professional designers? I've got a few mag subscriptions myself, but they can be pretty expensive to keep up with, especially those with really great illustration and design. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
We need to survey our 3 acre property in a semi urban area. The surveyor claims to have a very hard time to find data to start with. I am wandering in the era of precision GPS, areal survey's with drones etc that if there isn't a much more efficient way of getting the data that is needed for our Landscape architect to to work in his CAD programs. I understand that there is a big responsibility on the surveyor when it comes to lot lines and when construction has to take place right at the edge with the neighbors. [more inside]
Later this year I hope to head up to Portland's UBI to take a frame building class. That will teach me the process of tube selection, cutting, welding, etc. In the meantime I'd like to learn as much as possible about the actual design process of a bicycle. Angles, fit, different materials, etc. Maybe even laying out the design in CAD (which I have no experience in). Seems to me this exists in a realm somewhere between product design and industrial engineering. Can anyone recommend some resources?
