On TV's Hannibal, how would you characterize the exterior of Hannibal's house? Architecture-wise, but also history-wise? A UK friend would like to describe/discuss it in her fanfic, but is unfamiliar with US architecture/history. Images inside!: [more inside]
With so many choices of themes, how does one go about narrowing them down? I'm a bit overwhelmed by the myriad of choices. I understand that security, updates, and responsiveness are all important. I'm brand new to WordPress and want to get going on building my installation, but I'm really kind of stuck until I figure out this theme thing. Bonus Question: I do realize you get what you pay for when it comes to themes. Do you have any recommendations for reasonably priced ones?
I've developed an interest in UX and web/content strategy and may have an opportunity to shift my career in that direction. What should I be reading/doing to make the most of it? [more inside]
I am looking for software (no video games; see inside for explanation) that lets you design the graphical user interface however you wish before you start actually using the software. [more inside]

What do Interior Designers talk about among peers? Looking for topics from logistical to theoretical. What is important to Interior Designers? What verbs do they use, what are their specialized vocab and sayings? What drives them to create? What do they hope their content to communicate? If the inner circle of the top Interior Designers went out for a drink, what would they discuss? What is the culture of Interior Design like?

I am doing a major re-haul of the 8x11 tattered paper signage in my public library that indicates where things are in my library. For example, the shelves in the 500's with books on biology, astronomy, and general science are labeled, un-surprisingly, "science"; I'm thinking about changing that one to "Life, the Universe, and Everything." Are there better ideas out there? [more inside]

I live in a mid-size apartment (1,313 sq ft). The current layout of the apartment consists of a large square-shaped living/dining area, and doors along one wall leading to the bedrooms. I'm thinking of adding a full height shelf in order to create a corridor leading to the bedrooms, in order to add more separation between the two areas. But this will cut down on the spaciousness and openness of my living area. Is it worth it? Are there any architectural/design concepts that I can look at to help me decide? [more inside]
We're making a jack-o-lantern this year, and would like to find some stencils for designs. Most of what I'm finding online is from homemaking magazines and isn't to my taste. [more inside]

In your opinion, what's the best platform out there to develop a website for my photography business? I'd like it to be mostly WYSIWYG, and I want to showcase example images so prospective clients can see my work. The images should be the focal point, but I obviously also need to include contact details, social links, etc. Thanks! rs
I'm thinking of getting a Plimsoll line tattoo. Does this symbol have any other connotations I should know about? [more inside]

I'd like to teach myself interior design (for my own spaces, not to do work for others). I think I have the ability to do it well, but so far I've been disappointed with my results. What resources do you recommend? [more inside]
I need to take images like this and do something to them to turn them into super-blurred, semi-abstract background images like this. [more inside]
Are there any basic online tips for how to approach mobile app design (for print designers who have a formal training)? Resources for how to design for different screen sizes (there are so many of them), latest trends in UI/UX, and most helpful critique/help forums for beginners would be a great help.
The Muji stores in Palo Alto and San Jose (possibly others) have a stamp station where you can stamp their stationary, bags, etc. One of the self-inking stamps is an elephant. I want that stamp because it's awesome. But it is not for sale by Muji, and I was unable to locate their source (their employees didn't know either). Does anyone know if I can purchase these stamps, and if so, where?
I've designed a logo for a client, but our agreement doesn't cover beer. [more inside]

I've been making websites since 1997, when I set up my first GeoCities site learning out of the HTML for Dummies Quick Reference. Sadly, my skills plateaued around when I was graduating college in 2008. I've got seven days of free time coming up in a sort of work mini-sabbatical... help me get up to date! [more inside]
I'm teaching an Intro to Programming course to first year design students. I'd like to show them examples of cool art and design projects with a strong programmy feel: interactive, algorithmic, data driven, mapping, etc., to get them excited about learning to program. [more inside]
I bought a plate in Tokyo at Tokyu Hands. The best way I can describe it is "whimsical." I'd love to find more plates along the same lines, but I don't know where to look. [more inside]

I'm an indie writer who wants to learn how to do good covers. I am also completely new to photoshop. Would like to know of good tutorials that will teach me photoshop AND good book cover design. Preferably at the same time. The web is littered with sites and video that's supposed to help. But I'm hoping someone here will steer me to something really good.
I am considering moving into an apartment that has couple of pillars inside it and I want to know what the best way to design around them is. [more inside]
I'm looking for some compact, relatively self-contained resources (posters, handouts, Youtube videos, the like) that lay out the fundamentals of usable document design in terms beginners could understand: just very basic principles like white space, balance, choosing fonts, use of color, etc. [more inside]

Hi all. Long shot, but - I saw this design in the Garst Museum in Ohio, where the Annie Oakley collection is kept. The design is worked onto a pair of leather gauntlets. The label said that the gloves had been a gift from Sitting Bull; it's possible, but also might be apocryphal. I'm interested in quoting the design in an art project, but before I do, would like to know whether anyone recognizes the motif or knows its associations. [more inside]
For career search and professional networking, my goal is to have two business card sets for two separate functions: (A) Personal/professional networking, which I think should be clean in design and potentially easy for business card scanners to scan, and (B) 1 or 2 quirky styles for packaging with hard copy resumes, stationery, after in-person interviews, and possibly at geek-oriented events, which I think should more whimsical and/or notable. I want your opinions and/or additional ideas if you think I'm off-base or should consider other approaches. [more inside]
I'm looking for images of residential gardens that embody high design standards--websites are fine; books are great. [more inside]
I am researching mobile apps similar to Airbnb and Trip Advisor--essentially popular apps that allow you to (a) search and (b) book. Any resource that critiques or breaks down how these apps work is extremely important as well. [more inside]

I am helping a small non-profit which does almost everything wrong when it comes to visual design. There are very limited financial resources and I'm not a designer, just someone who knows the basics. I think I need to produce a simple style guide which can be used across multiple channels, but I also need someone to redesign the web site and I don't know what comes first. [more inside]
Although I studied graphic design in university, I never really learned how to deal with the business side of things. I understand there are plenty of resources for how to create a quote or an invoice, but I want to learn how to deal with the little nuts and bolts involved in the project, namely typefaces. I'm folding a thousand origami cranes, and I'm starting to get curious about the patterns on the Japanese origami paper I'm using. I think I recognize a couple of them, but I'd like to know the significance of any you recognize: maybe they are traditional textile patterns or have other uses? Are they a certain flower, fruit, or season? Or maybe they are entirely made up for these packs of paper. [more inside]
Can anyone help identify this design (I know it was at least used on sheets and wallpaper, if not more products)? This is a design on a product line that has since been discontinued. I'd like to know who used to sell these products and how to find them. Thanks! [more inside]
