I know amalgam fillings are more durable. However, they also require drilling away more of the tooth. Given this, which is a better choice for filling a molar in the long run for a young person?

I have fillings that need to be replaced, and I need to decide whether I want amalgam or composite fillings. I may also need a new crown, and I need to decide whether I want the basic option or to upgrade. How do I decide?

So, I cracked one of my lower molars and it now needs to be crowned. My dentist is planning to perform a root canal on the tooth before crowning it, but I'm not sure if it is necessary.

I had a root canal on a tooth a couple years ago, and never got a crown on it. Most of the rest of the tooth just fell out. Do I need to do anything about it?

How can I keep my kitty from bouncing off the walls while he’s fasting?
My 12-year-old cat Marty must fast Monday after 8 p.m. in preparation for teeth cleaning (and the requisite anesthesia) Tuesday at 8 a.m. (Sorry to fall down on the picture mandate – he’s all black, so taking a recognizable photo of him is … not easy!)

Good afternoon. I am in the market for a doctor, of the general practitioner variety, a dentist and a new laboratory in NYC. Any referrals you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Over the past 6 months I've been having a dental implant installed, and it has now failed. The dentist has been rather dismissive of the pain, and I'm pretty sure I can identify specifically when the implant failed and I believe it to be his fault. This should have taken 4 appointments to finish, and has now been 9, and will end with the 10th…hopefully. There are other instances of his (possible) incompetence past the break (please read if you are going to reply). He has said that after I heal when it's removed he will do the process again for free…but I'm rather terrified of him now. Do I have any legal recourse to ask for a refund?
Again, details after the break.

I'm guessing this one is unusual, and maybe only answered by an advanced dental pro, but here goes: I have an under-bite, in that my front-most lower teeth actually make contact with the roof of my mouth. I tend to grind my teeth at night and so end up with a sore spot just behind my front upper teeth. I've gone to a orthodontist/dentist and he created a bite plate for me but I hate to use it. It tastes like plastic and feels bulky and uncomfortable in my mouth. Is there another way to fix this problem?

What are the safest dental options for a missing front tooth while breastfeeding? I am breastfeeding my infant son and I need to have get a dental implant or a bridge for a missing front tooth. I am considering delaying the procedure until he is done nursing -- at least 10 more months -- so that he is not exposed to anything toxic.

I will be having a root canal soon, but the dentist has told me that the damage to the tooth may not be treatable by the root canal, and that other action may be necessary. He's given me a few options to consider, and has asked me to pick one.

At the dentist today I was reminded again that I brush my teeth too hard and too briefly. The solution, obviously, is a theme song. Know of any songs about two minutes in length that will inspire gentle circular motions? Bonus question: Should there be a different theme song for morning and night? Thanks.

Why are my upper left molars so fragile?! I am only 27, but my last three teeth are all dead and have cracked. I had a lot of cavities as a child, despite rarely having any sweets and a moderately good dental hygiene (okay, it wasn't impeccable, but it was not as horrible as some I've seen, namely my father who never brushed with no cavities at all) but as a teenager/young adult/adult my teeth were mostly fine and my brushing habits are much better nowadays. Within the last two years I've had two molars cracked. One losing a big chunk, the other down the middle and is not salvageable. All on my left upper side.

A rear molar (#30 for you dental fans) had a chip missing but was otherwise asymptomatic but my dentist recommended a gold crown before the tooth broke and caused greater problems. I followed his advise and while wearing the temporary crown I noticed a new, distinct and very painful sensitivity to cold. He dismissed it as a fluke and installed the permanent crown, but the sensitivity remains and now I can't eat anything frozen without agony. He x-rayed the tooth and found no structural issues, nor did he find any leaks in the seating. He claims that the problem is just routine cold sensitivity and advised aggressive fluoride, but with no prior problem isn't it more likely that he screwed up something and, if so, what?
