Is there a market for custom built computers sold through an independent person, versus Dell or HP?

I was wondering if having a dead cooling fan in my Dell Vostro 1500 laptop would make the screen go wonky ?
I purchased a new cooling fan, but I have no idea how to install it.

I'm looking for a fast laser printer (black and white is fine) with low running costs and not too invasive software. Ideally one with separate toner and drum cartridges and easily refillable from non-official sources.

This could be a Dell tech support question, but I think it may actually be
easier to get answered here. I have a
Dell E-Flat Panel Stand and I'm trying to disconnect the riser from the base of the stand. The
diagram is no help; it only shows how to put them together (see diagram 1). I've had no luck with Google or the Dell support site. I don't see any release button/unlocking switch. Help!

I have a Dell laptop with Windows 7 32-bit on it and I'm having the weirdest issue with it. The "Devices and Printers" control panel window hangs every time I open it. It gets to about 90% of the way, according to the progress bar, and then stops. I can manage my printers using the Admin tools but everything else is unreachable. Is there any way to fix this short of a Windows re-install? This is a work laptop and I'd rather not have to go through our IT service department since they'll nuke everything on it that wasn't there when I got it.

I need a new Desktop PC and I want it to run
well. First, what are good combinations of processor and memory? Intel's Ivy Bridge I7 processors look the best, and I'm guessing 10 gb of ram would suffice, or would it? I'm not buying an Apple, but HP? Compaq? Dell? What combination of processor/ram/brand would you recommend for a desktop somewhere around a thousand dollars? Thanks!

Fraking-Touchpad filter: My Dell Inspiron Touchpad completely ceased to work at all last night. Me and the Dell tech guy ran some diagnostics, and ascertained that it is NOT a hardware problem, it is an OS problem (I have Windows 7). He says my only option (aside from getting a external mouse and using that instead) is to wipe the whole OS and start over. Really?

Follow up to previous question....4yo Dell Inspiron laptop suddenly giving me the old "Plugged in but not charging" routine. Froze the battery for a day but no luck. So I bought a nice new one from Amazon that charged right up and worked for a week. No this one is giving me the same message. Any ideas? Or a place to turn to troubleshoot things? Any help would be appreciated.

Hello. I have a 4yo Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop and about a 10 days ago it stopped charging. It said, "0% available, plugged in but not charging". Took the battery out and put it back in a couple of times and it went back to normal, charged up fine. It happened 2 other times but it went back to charging. However, now it seems to be stuck in the - "plugged in but not charging mode". Any ideas? Thanks

Is my (partner's) laptop display kaput? It alternates between a blank screen (although the backlight is on) and strange wavy pink-green effects.
The system outputs to an external monitor, and I've updated the bios and display drivers. I have also taken off and apart the screen to check the cable connections, with no change. What's happened? Motherboard? Display? Cable? Specs inside.

My laptop died a few days ago. I'm probably starting a new job next week for which I will need a laptop. The deceased was a one-year-old (JUSt out of warranty) Dell Inspiron 1464 whose motherboard got fried from unknown causes (possibly because it was sitting and idling in a hot part of the house with no way to dissipate the heat). It cost me about $500-something and we were a good team. Question: Should I just get another one of those or try for an upgrade within that same price range?

I have a Dell Vostro 1500 that has good build quality and I have loved it for the past 4 years. However, the sound amp has gone out and I'm needing a new keyboard, plus it's still running XP so I thought I'd check out new laptops. ALL Dell laptops now come with "truelife" (glossy) displays and I can no longer get a matte display like I have on my Vostro. So.....is it worth it to try to get mine locally refurbed or should I bite the bullet and get a new laptop? I have no idea what a rehab would cost versus a new laptop. More than anything, I just love the way my current laptop "feels." (You know?) FYI, I have an iPad and it does most everything I need to do anymore, but still need a laptop with Windows for work-related things. Thoughts?

Any major difference between optiplex and xps? I'm getting quotes 3 basic machines, 2 power user machines and 1 power user laptop for a small non-profit. They gave me the first quotes and they ran pretty basic configurations, intel duo processors, all optiplexes... i went to the small business website and mades some amazing computers, XPS's with much better specs, and around the same price points (i5 or i7 processors). The dell rep just emailed me and said that xps's are gaming machines, not really for business... any thoughts?

Hey folks. Long time reader, first time 'asker.'
Help me find a cheap, used computer parts store in San Francisco - I'm particularly looking for Dell laptop parts.
Just inherited a Dell D810 Latitude laptop - needs some love - almost free love, that's my budget... Any chance in getting a line on a used dell charger (type pa-10) or a used battery for a Latitiude d810 (type Y4367)? Anyone know of a recycle-ry that I can hit up for cheap? I've scouted ebay, put a call out on freecycle (Marin, SF), and scoured craigslist. Suggests?

Is there any way yet to buy a truly carrier-unlocked Dell Streak in the USA? The ones in the US for $450 are carrier locked. If I buy the model from the UK, with VAT, it'll be something like $700 after converting GBP to USD, and those are -also- carrier locked, to O2.

It's time for a new laptop. I have always had, and loved, Toshibas, and have put them out to pasture due to general age and crotchety behaviour rather than total meltdown. I was all ready to buy my new one (
