I'm nearing the two-year anniversary of my dad's death, and a close friend just lost a family member in a tragic accident. As I remember my dad and support my friend, I am craving some sort of movement-based grief ritual - an active dance, set of motions, physical practice, to do with others, potentially at my (UU) church. I don't want to "learn how to dance." I just want to be able to go to dance clubs. Are there classes for this in NYC? [more inside]

I’ve noticed that wearing workout clothing/gear that makes me feel good, tough, and strong, can actually give me a little extra mental confidence to make me better, tougher, and stronger in my workouts. What kinds of workout clothing and accessories make you feel badass? [more inside]
The pad is the thicker foam-core type (so, still a soft pad, but not super thin) with a kind of suede-y rubber-y mat. It slides pretty bad over our short carpet! Any ideas? [more inside]
Hi. So a good friend of mine is a happy young woman, about to have her 23rd birthday. She's asked her friends for songs to play. I found a list of songs referring to being 23, here on Metafilter - but they're all generally pretty depressing and negative about being 23. Do people have songs they recommend, for happy young women in general? Her tastes are modern, rock-oriented and eclectic - she's a big fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Pretty Reckless, MGMT, and dance music, for example. thanks!
What show from the late '80s or early '90s had a clown announce, "Hey, everybody! I've got a raccoon in my pants!"? [more inside]
My boyfriend and I will be in Montreal for a long weekend June 25 through June 28, and we're looking for non-pretentious, mixed-crowd bars and clubs with good electronic music or hip hop. This should be easy, no? [more inside]
A coworker invited me to her daughter's rangapravesha (indian dance performance) after I saw a fancy brochure/program at her desk and remarked, "Wow, this looks amazing! It would be great to see this kind of dance performance! Let me know when she is performing!" Did I awkwardly invite myself to what is essentially a family event, like a quinceañera or a graduation? If you've been to a rangapravesha or had one of your own, what else should I know if I attend? Additional over-thinking questions below the fold. [more inside]
My partner and I are intermediate-level ballroom dancers; we're looking to put together our first formal routine, and would appreciate some helping finding the right music. [more inside]
The dance and visuals in this video continue to represent for me the summit of a certain kind of excellence after several years of repeated viewing. [more inside]
I'm looking for pop songs -- dance or hip-hop -- that have the same kind of chilled out almost-but-not-quite-90s-euro-house vibe as Ne-Yo - Closer, Jhene Aiko - The Worst. The songs should have kind of a relaxed vocal, washed out synths, subtle guitar and/or piano, and an easy groove. I'm especially looking for songs from the past 5 years. (and not Daft Punk).
A friend of mine is starting a research project on dance videos (which certainly doesn't mean just ones created by professionals - so e.g. Saudi penguin dances are just as interesting as Gangnam Style) that have gone viral on Youtube or other online platforms. Many examples may comprise of both professional and amateur creation e.g. Happy . The key thing is that dance is the *main* reason for the viral spread. What are the most interesting and influential (or otherwise noteworthy!) examples of this in your experience? Thanks for your suggestions!!
Last year around this time misskaz asked this question that resulted in a Summer Jamz 2013 playlist that was SO AWESOME that it changed my life. Can we do it again? [more inside]
I've been taking a Lindy Hop class for about a month and I'm really enjoying it. I'm keen on eventually going out to social dances and events when I feel more confident, but I have no wardrobe to back it up right now. I have a vague idea of what swing era fashion is like, but I'd like to do more research on what's hip, cool, and appropriate. Can anyone suggest sites, blogs, pinterest boards, online shops, etc so I can get a sense of what I should deck out in?
What funky, upbeat music should be on my next hooping playlist? [more inside]

"My" cat's name is Tiny. I want to pick her up and dance with her around the house more when she comes to visit. Can you please provide me songs that would adapt to using the word "Tiny" that I can sing to her while we dance? I already know "Tiny Dancer" and "Private Dancer." Please assume classic songs I (a relatively music-clueless 43 year old) would know.
Looking for suggestions for songs to ask our gypsy-jazz wedding band to play! [more inside]
I wanna go to some dance performances! Help me figure out what to see. [more inside]
I am at the stage in my dance hobby in which I am trying to go beyond individual moves into dancing those movements in a way that evokes a specific feeling. Whether it's assertive & funky, soft and flowing, or happy and excited--I need to learn how to use my body to convey different moods. I'm taking private lessons, but are there written resources like textbooks or handbooks that walk through basic principles like "here's what makes arm or leg lines look confident, this is how to make a movement look quieter, etc."? I do partner dancing but resources for any style of dance are welcome.
A while back, on tumblr, I saw a gif-set of some kids dancing. One of the kids is then arrested by the police, but then the camera zooms in on his feet, and you can see that he's still dancing even as he's getting arrested. Does anyone have a link for this? I can't seem to find it now, and it's driving me batty.

Weddingfilter: My fiance and I are getting married in NYC in October, we'd like advice on Wedding dance classes. We'd like personal recommendations if anyone has experience with specific places. [more inside]
I love workout DVDs, but often HATE the music they have in them. I get especially annoyed when the instructor isn't even moving to the beat, so imagine my joy when I discovered Zumba a couple of weeks ago! I don't have a regular schedule, so can't really guarantee that I'll be able to attend classes, so I think I'll be exercising in my small living room. What other DVDs or styles of fun and intense dancey workout things should I try? Bonus points for something that burns off a lot in a short amount of time.
I am a member of a small acrobatic group including both men and women, and we are having a hard time finding costumes. There are more options for women, but almost none for men except basic gymnastics outfits and unitards in a handful of colors. We'd love to find a place to get really dramatic costumes, or at least parts we could use to design our own without having to make them completely from scratch. Online is best, as I am in Iceland.
I just caught a scene from the 1953 film Stalag 17. In it, some WW2 prisoners of war hold a dance, and for obvious reasons, half the male dancers are following. Can anyone help me fill in the imaginary back story as if I were watching this film in 1953? [more inside]
Where do you find great hip-hop dance classes in NYC? I have never taken a dance class before. I am interested in private instruction or intimate classes (NOT a gym class...). I would like to learn as quickly as possible, in a structured way. I don't expect to go from 0-60 overnight, but I will put in some serious work. I tend to prefer methodical approaches to learning new skills with clear goals. I'm most interested in hearing about personal experiences and recommendations.
I don't suppose you remember a programme that showed ballet or contemporary dance in a swimming pool at night that would have been shown in the UK in the late 80s or early 90s? [more inside]

I saw an old clip on cable a while back and can't find it again. It featured what I think was a young Buddy Ebsen, though it could have been another actor who was later famous as an older man. The clip was in black and white, I believe the principal dancers were in sailor suits, and the song was something like "keep it gay" or "make it gay" but it was definitely not the song/dance sequence from The Producers. Does this ring a bell for anyone?
Need examples in poems or literature of a female dancer's movements. The catch: the passages need to be more objective/technical, and less romantic/sexual/beauty-loving in their descriptions. The way a straight female dance teacher, as opposed to a straight male layperson, might describe the dancer's movements.
I know that Macbeth is a cursed play. I know there were riots at the first performance of the Rite of Spring. I know that when you read the script for the King in Yellow you go insane. Are there any more examples of performance art that has a disastrous, cursed, or otherwise spooky reputation? Theater, dance, opera, paintings, etc all okay.
I need some additional music to play at an event tomorrow night, and I have exhausted all the AskMes on this question. Recent dance music and dance music that meets the somewhat bizarre criteria inside needed. [more inside]
The first day of tap dance class is on Monday, and due to an ordering snafu, the tap shoes I ordered online won't get here in time. Where in the DC/MD area can I buy a pair of tap shoes tomorrow? I'm a women's size 7.
My fiancé is going on tour in support of a major pop act. This means consecutive three-month absences for the next year (maybe two) as she performs. This is her calling and her art and I support it 100%. Still, I dread her long absence and I am going to miss her as fiercely as I love her. I'm looking for ways to maintain our strength, equality, and communication, and to stave off problems that must arise. Particularly advice, anecdotes, and specific things that helped your (similar) relationship - or hurt it.
My seven-year-old son won a cheap-and-basic MP3 player at a charity tombola. Since then he's been pointing out tunes that he'd like to carry around. I need to find some more! [more inside]
In Chinese martial arts and dance (in China) it is traditional to have kids try to do the splits (the sideways, or lateral kind). The kids will try to push their legs apart as far as they can, and then the teacher will come along and push down on them to get them further apart, causing the kids to grimace in pain. Is this bad? Or is this good? I'm sure that Americans (like me) will balk at this in a strong reactionary way, but I'm also sure that there are countless people who have had this done to them in martial arts and dance classes as a child (outside of America). Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, all those amazing Chinese gymnasts, etc have certainly undergone this kind of treatment. Jackie Chan is still going strong. Is this "American reaction" unfounded? What would the dance genre be called for the type of music Pokey Lafarge plays on his self-titled album? [more inside]
I'm in NYC for one more week, and I'd like to go see a live dance performance this Tuesday. I'd prefer something more modern, or even circus-y, to ballet. (Sorry - I don't have the right vocabulary to talk about dance!) Budget is $100 for good seats at the right show, but I'd prefer cheaper. Do any of the NYC mefites have recommendations?
What songs fuse poetry or spoken word with music? The closest I can think of are Baz Luhrmann's "Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)" and Poe's "Hey Pretty". I'd be especially interested in mashups that do this.
