I've been taking a Lindy Hop class for about a month and I'm really enjoying it. I'm keen on eventually going out to social dances and events when I feel more confident, but I have no wardrobe to back it up right now. I have a vague idea of what swing era fashion is like, but I'd like to do more research on what's hip, cool, and appropriate. Can anyone suggest sites, blogs, pinterest boards, online shops, etc so I can get a sense of what I should deck out in?

" cat's name is Tiny. I want to pick her up and dance with her around the house more when she comes to visit. Can you please provide me songs that would adapt to using the word "Tiny" that I can sing to her while we dance? I already know "Tiny Dancer
" and "Private Dancer
." Please assume classic songs I (a relatively music-clueless 43 year old) would know.

I am at the stage in my dance hobby in which I am trying to go beyond individual moves into dancing those movements in a way that evokes a specific feeling. Whether it's assertive & funky, soft and flowing, or happy and excited--I need to learn how to use my body to convey different moods. I'm taking private lessons, but are there written resources like textbooks or handbooks that walk through basic principles like "here's what makes arm or leg lines look confident, this is how to make a movement look quieter, etc."? I do partner dancing but resources for any style of dance are welcome.

A while back, on tumblr, I saw a gif-set of some kids dancing. One of the kids is then arrested by the police, but then the camera zooms in on his feet, and you can see that he's still dancing even as he's getting arrested. Does anyone have a link for this? I can't seem to find it now, and it's driving me batty.

I love workout DVDs, but often HATE the music they have in them. I get especially annoyed when the instructor isn't even moving to the beat, so imagine my joy when I discovered Zumba a couple of weeks ago! I don't have a regular schedule, so can't really guarantee that I'll be able to attend classes, so I think I'll be exercising in my small living room.
What other DVDs or styles of fun and intense dancey workout things should I try?
Bonus points for something that burns off a lot in a short amount of time.

I am a member of a small acrobatic group including both men and women, and we are having a hard time finding costumes. There are more options for women, but almost none for men except basic gymnastics outfits and unitards in a handful of colors. We'd love to find a place to get really dramatic costumes, or at least parts we could use to design our own without having to make them completely from scratch. Online is best, as I am in Iceland.

I just caught a scene from the 1953 film Stalag 17. In it, some WW2 prisoners of war hold a dance, and for obvious reasons, half the male dancers are following.
Can anyone help me fill in the imaginary back story as if I were watching this film in 1953? [more inside]

Where do you find great hip-hop dance classes in NYC? I have never taken a dance class before. I am interested in private instruction or intimate classes (NOT a gym class...). I would like to learn as quickly as possible, in a structured way. I don't expect to go from 0-60 overnight, but I will put in some serious work. I tend to prefer methodical approaches to learning new skills with clear goals. I'm most interested in hearing about personal experiences and recommendations.

I saw an old clip on cable a while back and can't find it again.
It featured what I think was a young Buddy Ebsen, though it could have been another actor who was later famous as an older man. The clip was in black and white, I believe the principal dancers were in sailor suits, and the song was something like "keep it gay" or "make it gay" but it was definitely not the song/dance sequence from The Producers. Does this ring a bell for anyone?

Need examples in poems or literature of a female dancer's movements. The catch: the passages need to be more objective/technical, and less romantic/sexual/beauty-loving in their descriptions. The way a straight female dance teacher, as opposed to a straight male layperson, might describe the dancer's movements.

I know that Macbeth is a cursed play. I know there were riots at the first performance of the Rite of Spring. I know that when you read the script for the King in Yellow you go insane. Are there any more examples of performance art that has a disastrous, cursed, or otherwise spooky reputation? Theater, dance, opera, paintings, etc all okay.

My fiancé is going on tour in support of a major pop act. This means consecutive three-month absences for the next year (maybe two) as she performs. This is her calling and her art and I support it 100%. Still, I dread her long absence and I am going to miss her as fiercely as I love her. I'm looking for ways to maintain our strength, equality, and communication, and to stave off problems that must arise. Particularly advice, anecdotes, and specific things that helped your (similar) relationship - or hurt it.

In Chinese martial arts and dance (in China) it is traditional to have kids try to do the splits (the sideways, or lateral kind). The kids will try to push their legs apart as far as they can, and then the teacher will come along and push down on them to get them further apart, causing the kids to grimace in pain. Is this bad? Or is this good?
I'm sure that Americans (like me) will balk at this in a strong reactionary way, but I'm also sure that there are countless people who have had this done to them in martial arts and dance classes as a child (outside of America). Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, all those amazing Chinese gymnasts, etc have certainly undergone this kind of treatment. Jackie Chan is still going strong.
Is this "American reaction" unfounded? [more inside]

I'm in NYC for one more week, and I'd like to go see a live dance performance this Tuesday. I'd prefer something more modern, or even circus-y, to ballet. (Sorry - I don't have the right vocabulary to talk about dance!) Budget is $100 for good seats at the right show, but I'd prefer cheaper. Do any of the NYC mefites have recommendations?

We're considering a move to the Cleveland area, and one of the deciding factors for me is going to be the quality of the local dance music scene. But that leads me to ask: what's the deal with the local dance music scene? Does one exist? I've found a couple of online forums but they seem to be moribund.
So what's up, Cleveland? Anyone dancing in converted warehouses until the sun comes up? Are there gigs to be found for dance DJs here?

Our daughter is going to a dance intensive program
in Guinea, Africa. While my wife and I have traveled quite a bit in Europe and Asia, Africa is new to us.
She will be getting all necessary shots, travel insurance, etc., but we're more interested in the less than obvious. While she will be in and out of Conakry, from our understanding she will also be helping to build a school and traveling around other parts of Guinea. Does anyone have any advice for our daughter about Guinea, travel to Africa, cultural dos and don'ts or logistical information about communications, phones, or anything else?
