Finally was happily using NimbleTV as a DVR alternative with Roku, and now the company is "regrouping" aka service is dead. Is there anything like it that I can use to record and play back tv? Limitations: must be compatible with ClearQAM (no cable card or box). Already tried and failed with SimpleTV and Tivo. I have Roku 3 and an external 1TB drive that I bought for the Simpletv but wasn't able to use. Me, Previously
We are ready to upgrade from our ancient TiVo to a DVR that is compatible with Dish Network and supports an HD signal (yes, we are behind the times). Before we pull the trigger, we want to know what to expect. I mean, yes, we expect it to change channels and record things, but...do you like it? Does the UI work well? Anything we should know about going in?
I do not own a TV and I don't have a cable subscription. I don't want to get either one of those things. I do, though, occasionally like to watch broadcast TV (or recordings of broadcast TV) on my MacBook Pro or iPad. Aereo was a great solution. Now that Aereo is gone how can I create an approximate replacement for use in my home? [more inside]

I'm considering finally dropping cable and implementing a home DVR solution that captures over-the-air channels. I'm in the Phoenix metro area so will have no problems picking up the basic channels. I'm leaning toward the Simple.TV (the new one with two tuners) setup but wanted to see what other options might be out there. I subscribe to Netflix and have an Apple TV but don't want to pay for other subscriptions - which eliminates the Tivo. I also want everything to run off a dedicated "box" so I don't have to use a computer to manage things. So - in your experience, what works well? What doesn't? Is the Simple.TV 2 decent... or junky? I know this question has been addressed before but don't know what might be new in the last year-ish.
I have a TV hooked up to an antenna. I get all the network broadcast channels in HD. Sometimes, I would like to record some shows/sports that I'm not around to watch live. In way olden times I would buy a VCR, hook it up to my TV, set the timer, and everything would be hunky dory. But DVRs have me befuddled. Do you have a recommendation for a DVR without a subscription (what exactly are you subscribing to) that can work with an antenna? [more inside]
I just bought a Swann system, the DVR9-4200 with PRO-642 cameras. I've been extremely disappointed with both the image quality and the system reliability, so it's going back. [more inside]
I'm interested in getting a few residential security cameras installed to cover our yard and car areas. Requirements are: ~40 feet night vision, decent motion detection, networked recording to central PC/DVR unit (either over WiFi or PoE power), no batteries, weatherproof, not easily stolen. There are plenty of cameras with good tech specs, but many of them look like warp engines. I imagine putting up giant cameras will not only piss off the neighbors, but serve as a giant ROB ME I HAVE STUFF sign. What exterior cameras are not only good but inconspicuous? [more inside]
I never had cable TV growing up, so I'm curious if cable TV subscribers back in the (70s? 80s? 90s?) were able to schedule VCR recordings just like OTA users? Was it as "simple" as plugging your VCR into a cable set top box and programming the channels into the VCR so you could schedule a recording for HBO shows (or whatever paid cable show you wanted)? Or were HBO shows blocked from recording on VCRs somehow? (I remember you couldn't record just anything on a VCR -- there were ways to prevent a VCR from copying movies to prevent copyright infringement.) [more inside]
I'm looking for the most bare-bones video cameras that money can buy. I've been searching among security cameras, but what are some other possible searches? Imagine a security camera without the LED lights. As in, I would prefer an analog as opposed to USB output, but cost is more important than anything. The current cheapest security cameras I can find are $28 or so. Do any exist that are perhaps less than $20? [more inside]
DVR question: Is there any way I can automatically have my DVR record every New York Knicks game? I have a DVR from Time Warner and the software is very clunky, especially the abysmal search function. More details within. [more inside]
I have a shipload of DVDs that are continually getting scratched. I want to set up a server with lots of DVDs so the kids can play them from the server rather than from the media. Stipulating that I would only do this if it were legal in my jurisdiction, what setup will:
- Allow me to store DVDs intermittently with the minimum amount of key clicks;
- Let my kids play DVDs with the least amount of parental intervention on a Sunday morning;
- Preferably work without an Internet connection, because WiFi is pretty bad at that end of the house - but if it makes adding DVDs easier I'll work something out.

I want to save my DVR recordings on my computer. The problem is that, from the googling I've done, my DVR model encrypts the files in such a way that I can't transfer the recordings directly onto my computer, even if the USB ports on the DVR did work. I am wondering if maybe I can play the recording on my TV and just "capture" the playback on my computer so I can save it. If there's a way to get the raw recordings unencrypted, that'd be great, but I doubt it's possible. More inside. [more inside]

I have an open-plan office full of computers, about 75% Macs. We're considering putting in security cameras with a DVR. It seems to me that with all these computers (and a bunch of spares, at that) we could do this with what we have instead of paying a security company for dedicated hardware. What can I use to coordinate multiple webcams and do security-DVR-type stuff with them?
Is there a way to copy a recording from a Verizon FiOS DVR to a disc, thumb drive, or anything like that? Is this actually possible? I was on the New Year's Eve in New York broadcast multiple times and at length, so I would like to somehow keep this recording. What would I need to do?
