My dad has been saying he wants a portable DVD player because my mother and sister "watch HGTV incessantly and he never gets a chance to watch the kind of things he likes to watch". Dad has a hard time learning how to use technical equipment (he has yet to learn to operate their DVD player) so simple mechanisms are desired, his eyesight isn't that good anymore, and he has a fairly severe case of rheumatoid arthritis so he'll need something that doesn't have tiny or hard-to-maneuver switches and buttons. Also
I'd like something budget friendly (i.e., under $200). What do you recommend, movie lovers of MeFi?

My DVD player automatically plays all DVDs in French. I like French and all, but James Bond is so much more fun in English!

How can I watch old "Dexter"s and new movies from Netflix, etc, on my HD TV, the cheapest, simplest, least-techy way? I've got Verizon internet, cable and phone package, and a new Apple desktop, and don't want to add much more hardware.

So here's the deal. There is a beautiful scene in one of my favorite movies, The Unberable Lightness of Being, that I would like to put on repeat and play indefinitely. However, this scene starts at the very end of one chapter and goes on through to the end of the last chapter, so I can't just put one chapter on repeat without omitting other parts of the scene. How do I, using the MacDVD player, or any player for that matter, take a slice of the movie (roughly 4 minutes long) and put it on repeat and preferably save it to my desktop?
Thanks

I want to buy my mother a new DVD player for her birthday/mother's day. She wants one that can record VHS to DVD. When I went on Amazon to look for such a thing, there were an overwhelming number of possibilities. Can you help explain to me what some of the features are?

DVD Player dying?
My Panasonic DVD-RV60 player ("chipped" or region-free) has lately developed an intermittent problem playing DVDs. Often, when I insert a disc, I get either a "No Disc" or "No Play" message. Ejecting and slightly turning the disc (sometimes
many times,) will eventually result in the disc playing. CDs, on the either hand are read flawlessly. Once a disc starts playing, no problem. Is my player dying? I've tried cleaning the lens using a cleaning disc, but that hasn't helped.

Over the past several years, I have been burned by poor quality in home electronics from various manufacturers. I have purchased pieces by Sony (home stereo), Panasonic (theatre-in-a-box) and RCA (various pieces of junk), and all have given out in one way or another far too quickly for my liking. In a renewed attempt to build a proper home theatre system (DVD/CD, receiver, speakers, etc), and recognizing that I haven't the money for really high-end stuff but will avoid anything cheap, I seek outside opinions as to which manufacturers are making products that are of reasonable quality, and reasonably priced. Your experiences, please.

I'm in the market for an in-car DVD player and tv. Can a laptop with a DVD player fill this role well? This would be my preferred solution for some obvious reasons. Is there any problem with skipping?
(I have Googled this some and couldn't find good info...)
