MY CD+-RW/DVD+-R drive has been acting funky for a few months. When I put a CD/DVD in it, the drive itself functions, opening, closing, lighting up, etc. Unfortunately, it doesn't do anything from there. The drive isn't shown in My Computer, but it's there in Device Manager. I can't get anything from my DVDs or CDs, burn any CDs or DVDs. It's extremely frustrating and I am at my wit's end. What happened? Did the drive die? Here's a picture of the device manager with the pertinent info and iTunes saying that no burner is found. I start a radio show on Monday and I need to burn mp3 cds! Between the 4 desktops that my immediate family owns, we've probably been through 6 or 7 DVD burners in the last few years. Does everyone else have this kind of failure rate? Any recommendations on reasonably priced, quality drives, so that I don't have to keep replacing them? [more inside]

My current IDE DVD writer is starting to show its age, and I might have a little more money than usual to throw at its replacement (100-150 USD). Is there such a thing as a "premium" optical drive? This Plextor SATA drive would be nice from a cabling standpoint, but maybe you have a better idea? [more inside]

For Christmas, my roommate bought me an internal LG DVD+R/RW drive. The trouble is that I have a G3 iBook (900 MHz, the last model produced before they went G4). From my scouring, it seems that Roxio Toast 6 is the latest bit of software to support G3 Macs. Will that, along with a firewire/USB2 enclosure to make it act as an external drive, be all I need to pirate like mad? Follow up question: Where would I be able to find an enclosure in downtown Manhattan? Is it as simple as going to Radioshack? Please say it's as simple as going to Radioshack. Also, if forced to choose, is firewire or USB2 preferable?
