I have a Gene Cafe coffee roaster that appears to have a dead motor (receives 12V, doesn't turn, shaft is frozen even with gear box removed). The company sells a replacement motor for $39, plus shipping that brings it to almost $50. I have a strong suspicion that this motor should cost around $10-$15. [more inside]
Can you help me with some DIY questions about installing a washing machine without a hookup? [more inside]
I'm planning a recording studio on the cheap. For aesthetics, and as a way of diffusing some sound, I'm thinking about reclaimed pallet wood as a covering. Is there a glue product that would be suitable for this (it seems like pretty low grade wood is used for pallets) so that I'm not making many additional holes in the wall? [more inside]
I want to change the handlebars on my bike. Google tells me this is potentially expensive and more difficult than I imagine, but I think my bike might be an exception. Am I fooling myself? Or can I ignore the warnings? Bonus: Can I do it myself? [more inside]

Hello gardeners and DIY people of MeFi! I'm in the market for a gardening-related gift for mr. hgg, and I came across this seed keeper in the Lee Valley catalogue. It seems like a good, useful present for a serious amateur gardener, but it's really...utilitarian looking. On the other hand, this Mac and Ninny Seed Keepsake Book is exactly the aesthetic I'm looking for. I would just order that one, but unfortunately it's not available for shipment to Canada. So, if you garden/are good at DIY, what would be the best way to go about recreating the Mac and Ninny book? I thought I could just get a letterpress (?) 3-ring binder cover and then add pocket pages, but despite many Etsy searches, I'm having trouble finding anything that has a similar look. My second issue is I'm not sure what sort of pages to put inside. I suspect I'm not using the right search terms. Any suggestions? [more inside]
Pinterest and lifestyle blogs have led me to make an ambitious and very misguided decision to buy an unfinished and unpainted dresser for my bedroom. Well, I forgot I am useless at DIY projects and also have no clue on how to paint ANYTHING. [more inside]
I have a sheet of stamped steel, left over from a defunct knife factory, that I'd like to hang on my wall for display. It's 1/8" thick and a little over 8 lbs. The photo shows it leaning against the strip of wall I'd like to hang it on. Any ideas on how to achieve this? My landlord is pretty easy-going, but I'd like to not do anything to the wall that's too hard to reverse.
I'd like to sew a version of this Amazon Cable Management Sleeve for my home office in a fabric that matches my decor. Would a loose-fitting cotton or polyester sleeve for 5-10 computer cords be flammable or dangerous? Do I need to get a different type of fabric or scrap the idea altogether?
I have birds nesting in the fascia at the base of my house roof, about seven feet above my (asphalt shingle) porch roof, which has a moderate pitch. I have seen people nail a brace onto a roof to brace a ladder so that it can be leaned against the house. 1) Is this insanely dangerous or simply moderately dangerous? 2) Does this ruin the roof (I imagine it does), and how would I patch it? 3) Is there some other reason this is a horrible idea? I'm in a sort of dire straits where I'm getting rid of most everything I own. I have 50 or so posters and lithographs that mean a lot to me (out of print, signed, nostalgic, and such) that I would like to pack flat and sandwich all together and am curious of any extremely cheap ways to do so. My gf's Kenmore 80 series top-load washing machine wouldn't spin or agitate, though it did (and does) drain. I replaced the motor coupler, which was obviously broken, and the machine worked fine for 3 cycles then stopped agitating & spinning. [more inside]
I love the game Suspend and want to make a scaled-up version that can be played outside staked into the grass instead of tabletop. I'm looking for ideas, suggestions for materials and best practices for how to bend metal rods and general DIY tips for working with bending metal. [more inside]
I'm trying to determine what parts I need to bring LED lighting to my home. I'd like to install some lights in multiple rooms to be controlled by wall switches and my phone and my network. But I'd like to do it in stages to reduce cost. [more inside]
Daydreaming a bit - if we wanted to buy one of those "kits" and build a home, where in the US is it possible? Land not too expensive, hookups to services, not super remote, attainable permits, etc?

As a follow-up to this Askme I asked last year (with your great feedback), I've slowly made progress on our renovation and have had a lot of fun (and frustration) learning how to do this. I now have additional questions that I can't quite find the answers to regarding framing and eventually drywalling/tiling. [more inside]
New home owner here (yay!). We just assembled a space-saver-over-the-toilet-shelf-cabinet-thingy and it needs to be anchored. The flat pack included the anchor strip and a wood screw for securing the anchor to the unit. It instructs the user to obtain a screw appropriate to the environment for anchoring. Our environment is essentially just drywall. To the side, there's a shared wall with the shower that sounds like it may have a stud in there, but can't be sure. [more inside]
Basically my idea is to dig a groove the depth of the strip into the wall so the strip is flush. [more inside]
I'm trying to save money, and making sugar scrub favors with canola oil is SO much cheaper than coconut, sunflower, safflower, or olive oils. Is this a bad idea? I can't seem to find many blog posters who use canola oil, but it's a fraction of the price. I'd like to avoid any disasters like rotting, but I also don't want to break the bank.
Several years ago I found some instructions for building your own (banquette style, I think) seating out of plywood, foam, etc. What sticks out in my memory was the author introducing the need for new furniture. It was something like this: 'I loaned my apartment to some filmmakers for a shoot. After the fact, I discovered they made porn, and you can guess what they used my couch for. (They had sex on it.) Obviously I need new furniture.' Can you track down this page?
I have a broken cabinet hinge that I've tried to identify via serial numbers on the hinge and by comparison to other hinges online, but everything I've found so far has been slightly off. Is there any reliable method to describe and locate a hinge that exactly matches the broken one? (Same spacing of screw holes, angle of opening, etc.)
Weird objectfilter. Looking for a permanently wall-mountable curtain rod bracket for our living room or something that can act as a curtain rod bracket that becomes inconspicuous as possible when the rod is not there. 1) Commercially available? or 2) my design? See pic & details here. [more inside]

Our Northern VA household of three adults recently lost its hot water, due to a failure somewhere in the works of our natural-gas, tank-type water heater. Having wrestled this appliance a few years back to replace (what I thought to be) a faulty thermocouple, I was initially pretty confident, but that confidence has begun to ebb as the battle enters day four. This year, I found this awesome spice mix recipe from Nom Nom Paleo. It saved me heaps and it's a thoughtful DIY gift that I know my friends will really like. How to separate a stacked washer/dryer? I want to lift the dryer off it's base, a washer, and re-install it on a shelf above a new used washer. Need to know, or find someone who knows how the separate the stacked unit wiring. No appliance repair service seems willing, and I'm not sure where to find a help to do it. It will save me a lot of money, not to mention reusing/recycling/repairing a working appliance.
I am trying to connect my secondhand gas dryer and would like your advice on the sanity of this setup (second pic.) [more inside]
I have a 9 year old son. He's interested in making his own flying drone. How do we get started? Kits are fine, but I'd like to stick with simpler plans if possible.

We have a tub/shower with a spigot-knob (diverter) you pull up to turn the shower on. The knob doesn't usually drop when you turn the water off, but if you tap it down, the residual water/pressure in the shower pipes would drain out the spigot. After replacing our shower head, that is no longer the case. This leads to very slow drips as the water drains out. How can I fix this ? [more inside]
I fell in love with an expensive, and too small side table. I'd like to create something similar on the cheap but I don't have all my DIY steps down. [more inside]
