Basically my idea is to dig a groove the depth of the strip into the wall so the strip is flush. [more inside]
I'm trying to save money, and making sugar scrub favors with canola oil is SO much cheaper than coconut, sunflower, safflower, or olive oils. Is this a bad idea? I can't seem to find many blog posters who use canola oil, but it's a fraction of the price. I'd like to avoid any disasters like rotting, but I also don't want to break the bank.
Several years ago I found some instructions for building your own (banquette style, I think) seating out of plywood, foam, etc. What sticks out in my memory was the author introducing the need for new furniture. It was something like this: 'I loaned my apartment to some filmmakers for a shoot. After the fact, I discovered they made porn, and you can guess what they used my couch for. (They had sex on it.) Obviously I need new furniture.' Can you track down this page?
I have a broken cabinet hinge that I've tried to identify via serial numbers on the hinge and by comparison to other hinges online, but everything I've found so far has been slightly off. Is there any reliable method to describe and locate a hinge that exactly matches the broken one? (Same spacing of screw holes, angle of opening, etc.)
Weird objectfilter. Looking for a permanently wall-mountable curtain rod bracket for our living room or something that can act as a curtain rod bracket that becomes inconspicuous as possible when the rod is not there. 1) Commercially available? or 2) my design? See pic & details here. [more inside]

A burning candle wick fell onto the table's surface and there is now a faint, grey streak or spot that will not come off when scrubbed with a variety of cleaners. It has faded a bit but now no change is happening. Can it be repaired? [more inside]
Hi, all. Mr. Verdandi and I have an adorable 1940s cape which came with a milk door that leads to the kitchen. We'd like to seal it up, mostly for heat-retention reasons. Details inside. [more inside]
What products do I not need? For example, I've found that regular soap works as well as shaving cream when shaving in the shower, and that shampoo can be replaced with water and a small amount of vinegar and baking soda. How do I best live frugally and simply?
I've started to get into food photography and am interested in finding some cool surfaces to act as backgrounds for variety. [more inside]

Bought an LED light fixture. Only now noticed the instructions say "must be mounted on ceiling". Can I mount it on a wall anyway? [more inside]
Our Northern VA household of three adults recently lost its hot water, due to a failure somewhere in the works of our natural-gas, tank-type water heater. Having wrestled this appliance a few years back to replace (what I thought to be) a faulty thermocouple, I was initially pretty confident, but that confidence has begun to ebb as the battle enters day four. This year, I found this awesome spice mix recipe from Nom Nom Paleo. It saved me heaps and it's a thoughtful DIY gift that I know my friends will really like. I'm thinking ahead to next year, but I'm drawing a blank on gifts like this. What creative gifts have you made for others that were thoughtful and didn't break the bank? [more inside]
I am making Christmas crackers, and need some tiny cool gifts that are not nail clippers! Ideally under ten dollars each. These will be for adults! [more inside]

How to separate a stacked washer/dryer? I want to lift the dryer off it's base, a washer, and re-install it on a shelf above a new used washer. Need to know, or find someone who knows how the separate the stacked unit wiring. No appliance repair service seems willing, and I'm not sure where to find a help to do it. It will save me a lot of money, not to mention reusing/recycling/repairing a working appliance.
I am trying to connect my secondhand gas dryer and would like your advice on the sanity of this setup (second pic.) [more inside]
I have a 9 year old son. He's interested in making his own flying drone. How do we get started? Kits are fine, but I'd like to stick with simpler plans if possible.
One shower in our two-bath ranch house backs up whenever we use the other shower, and then drains exceedingly slowly. Tell me what kind of thing this is that I don't know how to do. [more inside]
Where can I find inspiration for planner decoration that is geared towards various alternative/weirdo types - e.g. queers, geeks, artists, activists, certain subcultures? [more inside]
We have a tub/shower with a spigot-knob (diverter) you pull up to turn the shower on. The knob doesn't usually drop when you turn the water off, but if you tap it down, the residual water/pressure in the shower pipes would drain out the spigot. After replacing our shower head, that is no longer the case. This leads to very slow drips as the water drains out. How can I fix this ? [more inside]
I fell in love with an expensive, and too small side table. I'd like to create something similar on the cheap but I don't have all my DIY steps down. [more inside]
I plan on making a dining table top similar to this I am considering a few ways to make the table. One is to use a slab or two of some kind of inexpensive wood or melamine and then spreading a thin layer of the concrete mix on top. My reasoning is that it will reduce the weight of the table. Our Washing Machine Outlet Box was put in wrong and someone went a little crazy making it "work." I would like to fix it myself, but am coming up empty on instructions and finding an upside down version. Would love any info, including "you need to pay someone." [more inside]
Hi! I've just spent way too much time (about 4 hours) online trying to learn which type of skating will hurt less. All information, including this thread, has only told me preferences regarding style and speed, not what will make me go boom less. I care not about speed, performance or dancing in them, only if they can get me to work (much downhill) without dying. [more inside]
I'm a construction professional. I'm not a painter, but I frequently paint my own properties. Here's my question: there is an additive that makes every paint way, way better by eliminating brush or roller marks. I already pay good money for awesome paint because I know how much better it is than anything sold at big box stores. Why isn't paint sold with the miracle additive already in it? All the painters I work with know about it and think it's the best thing ever –– to be fair, only genuinely high-end clientele would notice, but that's my target group. (I won't disclose the name of the product because this is not an advertisement, I genuinely don't understand paint marketing vs. paint chemistry vs. paint marketing.)
I have lots of empty Lantus insulin vials. I want to make some version of this test tube chandelier. What should I use for the colored water? [more inside]
I am after some good old collective internet wisdom on the best way to go about a LED light installation behind my headboard and bedside tables. Just wondering if anyone had done a similar project and could offer any tips, especially on the correct way that I should go about connecting the strips? [more inside]
I'm not *great* at colors but I want to paint my room. Photos of current room here: I'd like to coordinate around the color of the turquoise dresser and the color of the chalkboard paint square. What color should I paint my walls? The more specificity the better (aka "match this exact shade" vs "paint it yellow") because I'm really not great at colors, but all suggestions welcome. Should I attempt to re-key every lock in our new house, or buy new deadbolts and knobs? We're talking about two entry way doors, two external security doors, and one driveway gate with a deadbolt on it. There are a mix of different brands in the existing hardware. [more inside]

We made an offer on a house and it was accepted - yay! We had the home inspector out today to take a look there was a potential red flag that may sink the deal - on one side of the house there are a series of small/moderate foundation cracks. How big of a deal is this really? [more inside]

Twelve years ago, when I bought this house, I had a gas line run from the kitchen to my new stacked one-piece washer and gas dryer. The plumber who installed the gas line hooked up my dryer. Now the washer has died and I have ordered a new laundry set - a front loading washer and separate gas dryer that will stack. They are due to be delivered next week. Yay! [more inside]
The dishwasher that came with the home we bought 9 years ago started making a crunching sound, and then it stopped making the sound, and now it doesn't drain. I suspect a bad drain pump. I know where to buy the replacement part online; is this a repair I can do myself or must I hire someone? [more inside]
We'll be on holiday with our two just-teen kids in a house on a Spanish island that's off both the water and the electricity grid, but with plenty of sun and wind. What are some cool little projects we could do - without having to ship out complicated gear/components - to own and appreciate the situation, and its potential? Self-built solar cooker? Makeshift wind turbine? Would love suggestions plus pointers to how-to's. [more inside]
We have an Oster Classic 76 hair clipper that the wife uses to cut my (thick, no-joke) hair and we love it. We have a full set of guide combs but only ever use 3 of them (#4, 5, and 6) for my head and I'm considering getting those size equivalents (0A, 1, and 1A I think) in blade form with the hopes of making the job easier for her. Could you help me understand if this is dumb because I might have this all wrong and not be doing any good buying said blades?
Have any of you done this? I'm looking for quality designs online and any general advice from your experience. [more inside]
Historically I have not been an incredibly handy person, but I currently find myself in the process of DIY building a few modular stage platforms from 2x4s and 3/4" plywood which will be clamped together to serve as a stage for a blackbox theatre space that I run (used for improv, sketch and stand-up comedy). Does anyone have any construction tips or recommendations to dampen the noise from footsteps? [more inside]
Dear friends are having a wedding reception, today, on a beautiful property, far from everything - which is delightful except for one problem. The portapotty water level is VERY low - it barely covers the bottom. With 100+ guests using it over a day, will we have a problem? If I cannot get in touch with the vendor, anyone know if it makes things better or worse to add a few gallons of water?
I'm fixing up a condo that I'm going to rent from my parents in 2 weeks. The kitchen floor is sheet vinyl on a concrete slab. I think my father said it's a floating floor. It's really worn out with large gouges and it's peeling up on the edges in some places. My father and I are planning to tear out the sheet vinyl and replace the floor with nice new vinyl planks.
