Seal the ends of Pine T&G Porch?

I just put in a new floor on my front porch. It's (nominal) 4x1 pine tongue and groove with the endgrain on the front edge. The floors on these kinds of porches rot at the edges pretty quickly, but it is the historical style. Can I seal the end grain with silicon caulk after painting? The other ends are against the house and would not be sealed. The porch will be heavily painted (primer x2, floor paint x2).

Replace exterior wood trim: more wood or PVC?

The wood in contact with my front steps has rotten away. Fixing it will be a DIY job. Should I replace the wood with more wood, or change to PVC? I'll be adding flashing behind the new trim, but otherwise the same wet conditions would remain. [more inside]

Gap between window and wooden sill letting in cold air

Last night as I was closing the shades I noticed cold air coming in and discovered what I think is a fairly recent gap between the wooden window sill and the vinyl windows. The gap is letting in quite a lot of air, and I am trying to figure out a) what caused it and b) if this is something we can fix (temporarily) ourselves. [more inside]

Putting casters on the narrow bottom of old bookshelves. Help?

How do I put casters on the bottom of this bookshelf? The bottom looks like this. The bookshelf itself is of some kind of MDF or high density particleboard, i.e. not pure wood. I want to put casters on the bottom of the bookshelf, but the strip of wood that touches the floor is too narrow for a plate caster like this. Can I somehow put a screw into the end of the particle board to fit a caster like this? How? Details inside. [more inside]

Who makes historically-accurate door casing moldings?

I have a bunch of wooden casing moldings around the interior doors of our Washington, DC home, and over the past 75 to 100 years, they've taken quite a beating. I'd love to slowly replace the worst of them with identical moldings, but despite a pretty exhaustive search on my own, I can't find anyone who still carries anything with the same profile. Does anyone have any tips for molding manufacturers/sellers that have good variety, especially of moldings that are accurate to the turn-of-the-century period? [more inside]

Wood and water don't mix?

We've got a wooden shelf in the bathroom in our (rented) apartment. We've been here two years now and it's gone very pale, and is stained a funny colour where water has landed on it. What should we do to return it to its former glory? (pretty much cleaning/DIY noobs, to be honest...)

Where to buy PC case mod supplies?

Let's say you had a wooden box you wanted to turn into a PC case. Where would you buy a metal 5.25" bay assembly? I'm talking about a U-shaped piece of flat metal that will screw onto the wood box wherein a couple of drives can be mounted. There's just way too much noise in Google on this one. Thanks!
