How is this color-changing LED array being driven?

Electronics/LED Folks: I bought a few cheap, poorly-assembled LED color-changing orb-things and I'm pretty sure they're the coolest objects I have ever owned. The problem is that the lanterns are either 12, 14 or 16 inch diameters and I want to find a way to make sure that all shine equally as bright. [more inside]
