New (old) house with the worst possible kitchen floor.

Help us figure out how to cover up or replace this god awful kitchen floor. We just purchased a farmhouse that was renovated in the mid 50s. The mudroom and kitchen have 9" asphalt tiles that are all coming up (so not level), and on top of that, the prior owner used these rooms as a kennel for his incontinent daschund. [more inside]

Straightforward way to reduce hardwood floor shine?

My very dark strand woven bamboo hardwood floors have a semi-glossy finish. Even after they've been freshly mopped, every speck of dust is visible and they'll look dirty the minute someone – wearing socks fresh out of the laundry, even – walks across the room. Is there any way I can change their finish to matte? [more inside]

Underneath my linoleum--a secret treasure! (question about subflooring)

We are going to install about 200 sq. ft. of laminate flooring in our kitchen/dining area, which is 1/2 linoleum and 1/2 ugly blue carpet. Because the previous owners installed 1/4" subflooring before they put in the original vinyl, there is a height difference between the carpeted area and the vinyl floor area. Should I rip out the old subflooring to level it out, or add subflooring to the recessed area so everything is level? There is *really* old linoleum underneath the carpet and the subflooring. Laminate or Pre-Finished Hardwood?

HomeImprovementFilter: We are about to start the finishing work on an addition, and we're trying to decide what type of flooring to buy:Laminate, or pre-finished hardwood? We've looked at both, and I think I like pre-finished hardwood better, but I wanted some real-life commentary, rather than my speculation. Any laminate horror stories? Successes? Pre-finished camp have anything to add?
