I have this USB DAC/headphone amp
(which is great). I just started using the RCA outputs for a pair of powered monitors
(also great). The problem is that the DAC switches between the outputs based on whether the headphones are plugged in. This makes sense, but it's annoying. I want to hack it and switch between them manually. Electronics whizzes, check my reasoning. [more inside]

Just wondering if this is something I should invest in, or would it be a waste of money? [more inside]

I'm moving in March and have decided I would like to put together a nice, high-quality sound setup on the cheap based around a Class-T Amp. On a whim I picked up this one
for $16 and am now looking for advice on the other equipment. [more inside]

In the process of ripping CDs to a media server (Mac Mini mid-2010), I did an A/B test comparing the sound quality of the Mac setup with my CD player. It did not go well. Currently the line-out headphone jack is just connected to the stereo, but I'm pretty sure that the DAC should be done externally for the improvement in sound. But various reviews seem to indicate that the Mac has high jitter issues with it's optical out. What's the best way to turn my zeroes and ones back into music? [more inside]

Audiophile questions: HiFi CD player vs DAC. What benefit is there to a CD player compared to just getting a quality digital/analog converter? What exactly is a quality DAC? Help me avoid audiophile snake oil! [more inside]

Which do I need a external sound card or DAC?
I have a Macbook Pro that I for listening to mp3's and some light meddling with in Ableton (mostly working with samples). I run Ableton 8 under windows 7 which I have connected via the headphone jack to a decent hifi amp and speakers.
My goal is 2 fold.
1) To get better sound quality when listening to mp3's
2) To get better sound quality out of Ableton
I’m unsure if i need to get an external sound card (like a M-Audio Fast Track Pro)to do this or if an external DAC (like a Beresford Caiman DAC) would be better.
Could someone outline the pro and cons of going down one of these routes? am I missing the boat are both these the same thing?

Please help me figure out if there is a problem with my new digital studio monitors (speakers.) They are supposed to decode 192 KHz streams, but I can only get them to do 96 KHz... plus I don't know what any of this really means... [more inside]
