I'm travelling from the UK to Japan in November, and have just realised that the mains supply stuff we are taking with us (phone/tablet charger with USB cable, camera battery charger for a Canon dslR) will require voltage conversion, not just an adaptor plug. This confuses me a little bit. Are there any recommended converters I should be looking at that will easily pack into luggage, or should I be looking at getting a Japanese usb charger/camera battery charger off of eBay before we go? I'm looking for a resource or, failing that, some outright suggestions of one-to-one comparisons for standard and metric units. I am tutoring a third grader with some learning disabilities who needs a simple visualization. In other words, I'm looking for a resource that says, "A meter is as long as a dalmatian" or "a foot is as big as your dad's foot." This is less easily googleable than I expected. Things like Scale of the Universe are neat, but I need a simple one-to-one relationship. [more inside]
I want to take my original art and sell prints and such on Society6. I don't have a scanner so I took the three pieces to Staples and they scanned them onto a jump drive for me. I didn't think to say, "hey can you scan these as JPEG," and when I opened the files at home they're all PDF. [more inside]

I am thinking of buying a brownstone in Boston as an investment property. It contains three apartments, but the legal status is currently only one-family. Historically it was a legal three-family, but previous owners changed the occupancy to one family in1973. There are currently three totally separate apartments that are being rented despite it only being a one family. My question is what is the procedure and cost to get it back to legal three family status? [more inside]
I have a hose that can put out water at 60 litres per second (16 gallons per second) and I want to know if this hose can roughly replicate a wind speed of 275 kilometres per hour (170mph). We will put an object right in front of the hose - so there will be little pressure fall-off from the hose. Is this conversion measurement at all possible? I don't mind if the answer is a little approxiamate.
How to turn 23 PDFs of at least 65 pages each, in column format, created in QuarkXpress into Word, without having the text made into nonsense by Word deciding there's only one column when there are sometimes two and a pull quote. Any ideas? (Getting Quark is not an option). [more inside]
Lots of home movies, some are super-8, some are tapes, some are mini-DV tapes, etc. I'd like to get them put on DVDs that I can then easily edit. I'm in Manhattan, NYC. thanks (oh a long time ago there was another question like this and somebody suggested a mail-order place, but I don't feel comfortable sending off my precious home movies from the 1950s etc. away)
We just received notice (so far just an automated phone message) that Charter is switching to 100% digital signal on their cable TV system, and as a result we would be required to get a cable box. Now, part of Charter's signal is on analog channels, and part is on digital, and the tuner in our TV can locate them all. Does tis mean that post-conversion all the channels will be beyond the range of the tuner in our recent-vintage LG TV? We have the 3-way bundle with Charter for phone, broadband internet, and cable TV all at their lowest level of service, the TV is called "Basic cable." I understand they are phasing this in, so I'm wondering if someone who already has experienced this could comment on what was the result. [more inside]

Recently, I am finding myself with a significant amount of drive time. I have many audio books I have downloaded from amazon which use the audible proprietary .aax file. They play in iTunes but I need to put them on a jump drive so that my MicroSoft sync system in my car will recognize them and allow me to listen. I could care less about the DRM, sharing or any of that business. I just want to be able to use the files outside of my Mac. They are too long to burn to a CD I have searched the web with no satisfaction. Any answers, oh wise mefi?

How do I fix this? I "imported" a table from a PDF (big mistake). In the pdf, the dates were formatted as AA-BB, where AA was the month and BB was the year. Excel interpreted that as AA is the month and BB is the day, and gave them all 2013 as the year. So now the date reads as 11-Jan instead of Jan 2011. I no longer have access to the original dataset because I only just noticed the mistake. I am using Excel 2010 on Windows.

I would like to buy unconverted industrial/office/non-residential space in London, like a warehouse or a school hall, to transform it into live-and-work artist studios over a few years. The state of dereliction does not matter too much, nor does the location, but how can I actually find some for sale? I doubt most of these things make it to mainstream websites, as Zoopla/Rightmove hardly have two handfuls of commercial properties for sale at a given time. Any clue?

I think it's possible to put digital music onto vinyl albums at home with some device I saw advertised somewhere. But will doing this produce an anologue sound or a digital sound? Will it sound as rich as if the album had originally been on vinyl or will it sound emptier the way digital music does? I guess I'm basically asking if it's worth doing. I don't know technical stuff about stuff, so I hope my question makes sense!

I have a USD account in the UK and received an incoming amount in GBP. However, it was supposed to be sent in USD from the US (so that's a cross-border transfer). The sender also claims that the amount was sent in USD. My bank claims and also the statement tells that the money came in GBP. Because of the double conversion (usd->gbp->usd) I received significantly less than if it happened without any conversion. My only idea at the moment is that an intermediary bank applied a conversion.. Can this happen? How can I clearly find out what happened? How to avoid this from happening again? Thanks for your suggestions!

I have a PowerPoint presentation with macros for sound, in a .pptm file with audio and animations for a class. My professor can't play it as is, so she wants me to convert it to a flash file format, which I thought I could do, but all the converter programs I've found need a PC, and I only have a Mac and so does my family. Naturally, my school's PCs don't allow installs, and I need to figure this out today. I have Adobe Flash, but it doesn't recognize the format, and I need to keep my audio/etc. any ideas for conversion or online viewing, etc? [more inside]

I've got an old Mac font suitcase (OS 9) containing fonts I'd like to use on my OS X (10.7) Mac. I'm not sure what format they're in but copying the file over to my new Mac results in a 0-byte file. I think I have to convert them to TTF on my OS 9 iMac, but not sure what to do it with. Any suggestions? Free would be great, since I don't plan on doing this again, but cheap would be okay.

I'm trying to convert an MKV file to mp4 using Handbrake, but for some reason it tells me it's finished converting 40 minutes through. The completed 40 minutes are excellent quality, but I'm at a complete loss as to why it's stopping so early. The file isn't DRMed to the best of my knowledge. What might be going wrong? How can I get Handbrake to finish converting my video? And if Handbrake can't, what other app for Mac handles MKV conversion without horrible quality loss (like VisualHub or QuickTime do)?
