What is 'bloatware', why should I care, and how do I fix it?

After some research I have decided to buy this laptop, which has great specs for the price - but multiple reviews (like this one) say that while it's a good computer, it's "full of bloatware, which takes time (or a fresh Windows installation) to clean up." I barely even know what that means, much less how to actually go about doing it. [more inside]

Fast as a speeding bullet, it's Super Windows Process! How to catch?

WindowsFilter: All of a sudden, a super fast "MS-DOS"-like process has emerged that begins and quickly ends on my Windows 10 desktop. It seems to be encountering an error of some kind, near as my speed-reading can detect. I have no idea what this process is, and it happens every 30 minutes or so. If I am in a fullscreen program, it kicks me out to the desktop, sometimes disrupting or occasionally crashing the program. How do I best diagnose and solve this problem? [more inside]

El Capitan and noatime

My Mom has an old iMac that's always seemed a bit sluggish. I recently installed El Capitan and it's now painfully slow, so I tried the noatime trick and it makes a big difference. Problem is I can enable it using the terminal but I can't get it to persist across reboots. Does this have something to do with Apple's System Integrity Protection?

Best way to clean personal info off work computer?

My work computer is 5 years old and is not responding well to the latest Office upgrade. It only has 4 GB RAM and my tech guy tells me that I need a new laptop. The connection

I'd like to read about the connection between the counter culture/alternative culture in the 60s and the first generation of computer culture. I believe our thinking about computers and the internet contains a lot of DNA from the alternative part of the 60s, but I don't know where I can read about this subject. Your suggestions (preferably links to online material) are welcome!

For several months now the media players on my PC "skip" when playing music. At first I thought it was just WMP but it's happened on iTunes and JRiver Media Jukebox as well. High Tech Non-fiction for a Low Tech Enthusiast

As of recently I've been really into non-fiction about the Internet, computers, hacking, or any combination of those things. I like the behind the scenes look at these technologies and the cultures surrounding them, but also that they're presented in layman's terms. Some books/articles that I've enjoyed and fit this bill have been: Ghost in the Wires by Kevin Mitnick, How Music Became Free by Stephen Witt, The Dark Net by Jamie Bartlett, and this Wired article about The Silk Road (Part 2). Could you direct me to some more books and articles like these?

Need a sleeve for the Macbook AIR 13" (not a Macbook Pro).

Why can't I find a nice, inexpensive sleeve (neoprene, felt, whatever) for my Macbook Air 13" laptop? I want a snug sleeve, not one that will fit any old 13" laptop. The Air is very thin, and it will swim in a sleeve meant for a 13" Macbook Pro. The local Mac Store was no help, nor was eBay, Etsy or Amazon. Unfortunately, I haven't found any to look at where I live either. My ideal price is under $30. Does anyone know of a sleeve that will really fit the 13" Air?

What was this computer-refereed board game about space I played in 1992?

I remember going to someone's house for regular sessions of this very long game about a quest for something that had to do with aliens, spaceships and weird planets. The defining thing about the game was that your Windows PC computer kept track of what was going on, even though you spent a lot of time reading passages the computer assigned you to read, from cards or a book. So it had this hybrid aspect reminiscent of VCR games.
