What do when living a meaningful life is expensive?

I am struggling with the lack of meaning and purpose in my life lately and, consequently, with my Computer Science coursework. I am feeling somewhat depressed, winter blues, etc., but I feel like I am going the wrong direction with my life and I have had that nagging feeling ever since I started at school again. I took this path to raise money for pursuing future studies in Psychology, but it has been a huge struggle so far. What should I do? (Further details inside.) [more inside]

Student loans for summer session

I'm currently a full-time graduate student in NYC, and I'm wondering what my financial options are for the summer session. I plan to take only one three-hour course this summer, and concentrate on my internship, which means I won't be working otherwise. Is a private student loan my only option for covering my expenses? College Admissions 101

My oldest child is currently a sophomore in high school. She is an excellent student, getting very good grades, in advanced classes. She is doing a great job. I can see the college admissions process heading our way. Her high school's guidance department does have an info night, which we will attend. But what I am looking for is not info on specific schools, but resources on how to approach the whole college admissions/applications process in a thoughtful, sane way. Books, videos, interviews, websites, who is worth listing to, who/what is best avoided?

Becoming a Teacher in NC

Recently my partner has expressed interest in becoming a full-time public school teacher in the state of North Carolina. He graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 2011 with a B.A. in political science and a 2.3 GPA. He has begun researching possible colleges to apply to in order to obtain the necessary teaching license, however, it is looking like most of the teaching programs have a requirement that the GPA be 2.5 or higher. Does anyone have any suggestions or know of a school with a teaching program that does not have a GPA requirement? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Seeking Career Direction, Want A Job Using Photoshop

I like Photoshop. I like math. I’m a deep guy. I’m not a fine artist. I’m not a photographer. I like writing. I’m deep, smart, and interested in the world, but extremely unfocused and pretty unconfident in myself and my abilities. Happiness, serenity, contentment and fun is more important to me than being rich. I was thinking of starting to learn how to do web design. I came to this conclusion after doing some research into jobs that use Photoshop. Is this a smart move that’s worthy of my time, given my interests? [more inside]

By what law are the parents of Caitlyn Ricci forced to pay her tuition?

The case has been kicking around for a while and all the comments are very excitable but don't shed much light on the judge's ruling. My instinct is to think the judge is wrong, that a child has no right to a college education, but I'd like to hear the other side. So - basically I'm looking for any links to the judge's actual ruling or the relevant law for this case.

Video games about universities and academic life

I'm looking for example of digital or video games - either online, free, commercial, or bought from a shop, on a PC, mac or games console - which simulate the experience of being a student, academic, lecturer or professor from an academic, social, or economic perspective. For example, the Sims 3 University Life expansion pack gives a (relatively shallow) social perspective on academic life as a student. Are there any others, especially ones with more depth or accuracy?

Fastest way to finish Bachelor's degree while working full time

Went to U of Utah for undergrad (1992-1998) and ended up leaving before finishing my Bachelor's to pursue a job opportunity. I did horribly in school (2.3 GPA) and had about 108 semester units. Now, I'm older (40 yrs) and arguably wiser and want to get my Bachelor's degree to possibly go after an MBA. I live in Santa Clara, CA now (Bay area) and work full time. I'm trying to figure out the fastest/easiest way to get a Bachelor's degree from an accredited school that also looks good on a resume and that I can use to pursue a higher degree. [more inside]
