Ever been a frat boy? Please help me write my novella!

Hi folks. I'm working on a new eBook, a comedy-fantasy novella about a frat boy who is appalled to find himself transformed overnight into a sexy girl. There's just one problem: I don't know jack about frats! I'm trying to research frat life, but I could really use the experience of somebody who has actually been a frat boy, or at least spent enough time in a frat to have some knowledge about them... academic library access for the independent academic?

I live in the West Midlands, home to a few good university libraries. Unfortunately, none of these libraries offer memberships to community members. My own alma mater, Birmingham City University, does not have an alumni library membership. It's very annoying. I would really like access to SagePub and T&F for journal articles. Can you recommend a university or college in the UK, Europe, or anywhere that offers remote access to their library's databases and where I could buy an annual membership?

CollegeFilter: How is one to choose without regret?

At the age of 24, I just completed my first year of undergraduate studies at a good public university. I am a strong student with a 4.0 GPA, but I feel that my interests are so broad and varied that I don't know how to narrow down on a specific path of study. Compound these problems with the ubiquitous financial and career concerns of the modern college student, and you have one confused student. How can I resolve this inner turmoil and structure a long-term plan that will bring me (at least some) peace of mind? [more inside]

College essentials - gift edition

I'm looking to put together a gift basket filled with college essentials for a soon-to-be college freshman living in the (driving distance from home) dorms for the first time. I can afford to drop some money on this, but the big things (computer, etc) have been covered. I can coordinate with the parents so that there aren't too many doubles of the same thing as well. What did you bring to college that was absolutely worth it?

Remind me to never have a random hookup…

About a month ago, I hooked up with a classmate that I had met earlier in the semester. There had been a lot of tension between us since the beginning of the year, and it finally happened the last week of the semester. It was a Big Thing for me because it was the first time I had hooked up with a guy and outwardly acknowledged my bisexuality. It was great, but then the semester ended and we both went back to our respective hometowns for the summer. More details and questions inside... [more inside]

Best college major for addressing climate change?

What kind of skill sets does one need to be of best help to addressing climate change? It would seem like the most obvious choice is to major in environmental science. Otherwise, maybe political science to deal with legislators and capital hill? Or "who cares what you study undergrad" and go to law school?

What a college education "means" in 2014

What is the basic cultural literacy and knowledge a post-collegiate adult "should" have in 2014? Master in Bioengineering at EPFL vs Biomedical Eng. at Imperial College

I summarize this dilema below: I have been accepted at EPFL (Switzerland) for the master in bioengineering with an EPFL Excellence Fellowship and also at the MsS in Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College London. Both Universities are very well ranked in these areas, as you can see in this bioengineering rank. In most rankings, Imperial College is a few places above EPFL and London is a great city but I would have a really good scholarship if I go to EPFL (18000$ per year) and the tuition is much lower (about 1000$ vs 13000$ at Imperial). How long should I wait before calling my school financial advisor back?

This is sort of an etiquette question. A scholarship that I'm receiving is requesting the school's bank account information. I have been trying to reach my financial aid advisor for the past 4 days. I emailed her 4 days ago and did not get a reply. Thus, I called her office several times yesterday and today and no one answered. I left her a voicemail message asking her to call me back and she still hasn't called. Today, I showed up at her office and I was told that she was out for lunch. I couldn't wait so I left a note at her desk to call me back. She never did. Should I continue to pester this lady until she responds? It's very frustrating that I haven't been able to get a hold of her but at the same time I don't want to be a bother or seem impatient if she's indeed really busy. Please advise. Thank you!

Why does my college website have advertising trackers?

Today I installed Ghostery, which is supposed to flag and block advertising trackers, analytics, and beacons. What Major and Career Should I Look At If I Enjoy Math?

In studying for my Behavioral Statistics final (it’s a statistics class dealing with psychology research methods) I’ve realized something. I actually kind of enjoy math. As long as I don’t have to memorize formulas (as long as they are right there as I’m going through the work) it’s actually kind of comforting and fun. In fact, every math class I’ve taken in college (I’ve taken two remedial algebras, college algebra, and regular statistics before this class) I’ve enjoyed and made an A in. I’m really struggling about what I want to major in (I’m in psychology but I don’t have it in the gas tank to get a PhD), but I know that a lot of people don’t like math. They don’t get it. I do, so I’ve got something there, right? The only problem is, I don’t know what to do with it. These are the parameters… maybe you can think of something that fits? [more inside]

I work as a math tutor at a community college and have the opportunity to spend an hour teaching math to a group of students preparing for a the college's math placement test. Now, I don't know what's on the placement test, but I want to teach something that's more engaging and conceptually accessible than "here's how to multiply (4x+3)(2x+5)", since I can't possibly review all of high-school math in an hour and don't think the students will get much from just another lecture. Help me find out if I can become a paramedic w/o attending fall classes?

I have things I'd like to do outside of USA every fall, so I'm wondering if I can take all the courses that I need For this 5 semester paramedic degree at Austin Community College during only spring and summer semesters. Also is there any way to do it faster than 5 semesters? Can I double up the 4th and 5th semesters (since they're short)? and any tips for me doing this in my non-standard pattern of only doing summer/spring semesters and skipping fall semester? Thanks!
