Do you need to get licensing agreements for these things?

Image licensing and advertising on the Colbert Report Does Comedy Central or the Stephen Colbert show have to get licenses of every image he uses on the show? For instance in one segment, he says "back then, most people just prayed for more flavourful tar in their Chesterfields" accompanied with the relevant picture of a (presumably) copyrighted Chesterfields pack.

Also there's many prop food products he shows off which seems very clearly to be advertising, but due to the nature of his show, he may only react positively to the product and jokingly denounce it. I had the impression advertising companies were too uptight about negative comments to be into this kind of advertising?

Though he does a lot more obvious advertising with Doritos and the like, it's the small stuff that makes me wonder how they manage it.

I'm looking for a shirt Stephen Colbert held up on his show on 4/15.

Stephen Colbert was just holding up a jersey on The Colbert Report (4/15) that was: part (1/4) Flyers jersey, part Sixers jersey, part Eagles jersey, and part Phillies jersey. Like a beautiful Philadelphia sports patchwork quilt jersey shirt. Can I buy this jersey? Does it exist outside of The Colbert Report?

How are Stewart and Colbert back on the air when the strike is still on? (derail follow-up)

Piggybacking on the derail in this question, and solipsophistocracy's question therein, why are the Daily Show and Colbert Report making new episodes with the writer's strike still going on? I heard that both Stewart and Colbert are members of the WGA and all the repeated references to the strike during their first shows back on the air lead me to believe that they are both completely sympathetic to the strike. What is going on here? Is it correct to say that they are not violating the strike because they aren't writing anything? How does the Daily Show/Colbert situation differ from the Letterman situation?

I've done a bit of googling, but everything I have come across is so piecemeal. I would love to hear some mefite perspectives on what is going on, especially from folks who are following the ongoing saga more closely then I am.

Too Many Moments of Zen to Count

Specific Daily Show and/or Colbert Report episode recommendations (with air dates so I can find them)? I'm putting together a 'greatest hits' DVD to give to an overseas friend for Christmas, and he's never been exposed to the Daily Show or Colbert except for YouTube clips. I have the regional DVD tech and the copyright issue under control. I just need content help.

I know that Comedy Central has most (all?) of these episodes online, and for that matter I even have about 1000 of them on my own hard disk... but that's a LOT of video to search through with no index. CC's blurbs pretty much just describe them all as "great", or list the guests. Sadly, the guests are the least useful part of those shows.

I've done some digging for a community-ratings site or somesuch, but I've come up empty. Some of the highly-rated ones on YouTube are nice, but they seldom mention the episode they're from or include an air date. So I come to you, AskMites.

I have no special favorite contributors (I think they've all done some great pieces, and some poor ones) or guests in mind. I'm open.

Even if all you can do is suggest a particular episode with its date (or week?) and a reason it's great, I'll track it down! I just need something better than "that one where Ed Helms makes those people look foolish."

Which Colbert Report episode had a video clip supposedly showing the person Sen. George Allen called "macaca" wearing a name tag that said "macaca" and being happy to be addressed as such? I'd also appreciate a pointer to a clip if one is online.

Colbert Report censored?

Conspiracy filter: Has anyone ever experienced this strange, suspicious phenomenon on TV before? The Colbert Report was seemingly censored right off the air last night here in my town. I live in ULTRA-conservative NW Florida, right next to Eglin Air Force Base, the largest in the world.

Last night, just as The Colbert Report was starting, the TV started making a siren-like squeal and that I've never heard from a TV before in my life. As the siren started the picture faded to snow and then the signal was lost completely. No other channel was affected and both adjacent channels were crystal clear. In a half hour, after the Colbert Report had ended, the channel was back to normal. Doesn't this seem odd? Am I being paranoid? I looked for a synapsis of last night's show, but couldn't find one.

O'Reilly Parodies.

Have you noticed anyone parodying Bill O'Reilly on TV? Ever Since Stephen Colbert's show premiered, I noticed that he parodied Bill O'Reilly's style on the O'Reilly Factor. I would really be interested in finding out if anyone else (comedian or otherwise) parodies Bill O'Reilly on television. Once I learn who parodies Bill, I'll try to catch a clip of it on TV, internet, or video.
