Anyone else in the Philadelphia area seeing this? There are some strange, vertical clouds in the area that look a lot like aurorae (it's well into darkness here), but they aren't moving. They look like they might be high-altitude noctilucent clouds, but I think it's the wrong time of year for those. What are they? I've never seen anything like them.

There is a name for a cloud formation that is dropping rain in a vertical "funnel" similar to this photo. The word might be Native American or Arabic, might start with a "Y" and I'm going insane trying to remember it.

A friend of mine from France and I both noticed that, in France, the clouds in the sky seem to be closer to the ground than they are in the US. I have searched all over and can't figure out why this is the case, but we both observed it independently of one another so I assume something real must be going on - I just don't know what it is! I'm looking for a cool picture of a cloud blowing wind, like this, except better quality and preferably older looking... like what you might find on an old decorated map. I'm googled out and need your hope!
