What is the cheapest way to get to Boston, MA from Cleveland, OH to see a concert?

What is the cheapest way to get to Boston, MA from Cleveland, OH to see a concert? An awesome Japanese singer named Utada will be performing at the Paradise Club in Boston, MA next year. The concert will be Friday, February 5th 2010 at 7pm. So far the plan is to get there Thursday, stay the night at a friend’s place, go to the concert Friday and then leave the same night.

I looked into plane tickets and there at present there about $350 roundtrip per person. It would be really unfortunate to have to pay $350 in airfare when the tickets to the concerts were less than $50.

Any other ideas guys?

P.S. Driving is a less preferred suggestion, as that would mean skipping more than 2 days of college classes.

Thanks in advance!

Help me find a vibrant Protestant church in the Cleveland area. I'm between denominations.

Help me find a vibrant Protestant church in the Cleveland area. I'm between denominations. I love the idea of going to church, but I've yet to find one where I feel comfortable coming week after week. Maybe you know the denomination I'm looking for.

I presently go to children's weekday Mass at a wonderful little Catholic church. I love it for the following reasons
+ The sermons are wonderful. We always learn about a Saint or a story about Jesus, and then the Priest helps us understand how to apply the lessons to daily life.
+ We all sing together. 100 school children, their teachers and many grandparents sing a simple song every week. Last year it was "we are made for service".
+ There is a fantastic sense of community. I know everyone. Everyone knows me. When we pass the peace, we mean it.
+ We all pray together.
+ I leave feeling refreshed and inspired to be a good person, with very clear directions about where a good person should head this week

However, I am not Catholic for all of the reasons that Protestants usually state. I'd like to find a church where I can take communion. I've tried the following... and had the following problems.
- Going to my parents Presbyterian church. It's mainly blue-hairs. I feel lonely during coffee hour. Everyone who talks to me pretty much just asks how old I am now, and tells me how much I've grown.
- Going to a Unitarian service. It seems to be more of a theological class than a worship service. We didn't pray.
- Going to a born again nondenominational church. We sang and prayed for a half hour, which was AWESOME..... but then the sermon would invariably be a half-hour pro-life rampage and during coffee hour teenagers would pass around petitions to overturn Roe vs. Wade.
- Going to a Non-denominational Contemporary church. Very vibrant, but the service lasted for hours. I had to leave because I was faint with hunger....and my ears rang all day from the excessive volume.
- Not going to Church for years. It leaves me with an emptiness... a yearning.
- Going to a Lutheran church. I felt bored and couldn't sit still.
- Going to a different Presbyterian Church. Great sermon.... but we're given about 5 seconds to 'privately confess our sins' before being forgiven. I find myself both too hurried to reflect, and bored after the sermon. Also, just a handful of adults under 40.

The issue is rather pressing because I'd like my son to have Sunday school experiences. I'd like to find a church (in or near Cleveland) with the following qualities, where I can settle down . . .
+ Young people. I'm in my late 20's and would like to be part of a community that includes a substantial number of adults under 50. Other families with kids would be great. People in their 20's and 30's would be awesome!
+ Protestant denomination
+ a sense of community
+ reasonable amounts of singing
+ prayer
+ sermons that teach about Jesus, God, the Bible and how to be a good person
+ vibrant worship (as opposed to the soul-stifling sound of an entire congregation boredly reciting 'Alleluia' and 'it is right to give thanks and praise in unison)

Rust Belt! Yes!

Rust Belt Boogaloo: What to do in Detroit, Indianapolis, and/or Cleveland this week? We're heading up North for a wedding and will be visiting each of those cities: Detroit Thursday and Saturday; Indianapolis Friday; Cleveland Sunday. (My college roommate lives in Indianapolis and I went to school in Cleveland. It's been years since I've been up this way and I want to make the most of it, rental car mileage be damned.)

We already have some ideas, but your suggestions for things to do or see while we're up there would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

How can I lose this spare tire without pssiong off the neighbors?

Inspired by this askme thread and particularly this response recommending Fitdeck, what sort of exercises can I put into a random queue to get back into shape? Background: Fifteen years ago I was 15 and in great shape thanks to martial arts training. Since then I acquired a philosophical aversion to fighting, abandoned exercise, and took up smoking, drinking, and general hedonistic excess. Fast forward 15 years and you've got a pear-shaped male programmer looking to get fit. Two weeks ago I successfully quit smoking and adopted a max-one-beer-per-day rule, and since then I've stabilized at roughly 160lbs thanks to a healthy diet. Now I'm looking to setup a daily exercise routine in order to lose the spare tire.

Martial arts classes involved a 30 minute warm up and 30 mins of training. My instincts are to fall back on that, only now I'm an apartment dweller concerned about disturbing the downstairs neighbors. Work is a 1.5 mile bus/bike ride away, weather permitting (Cleveland), so what can I do to supplement or replace that without disturbing the neighbors? FitDeck seems like a good option, but I'd rather not pay for a list of common exercises. What can I do with nothing but floor space to get results, short of jumping rope and pissing off the neighbors?

Where can I find a "Cleveland Baracks" t-shirt? I saw one yesterday at the mall- it was light blue, short sleeved, and featured a smiling POTUS stenciled in black over the inscription, "CLEVELAND BARACKS." I Googled and checked eBay/Etsy to no avail, but there's enough documentation of the existence of these shirts to make me believe it's not a renegade crafter's shirt.

I would prefer to not commission a hand-stenciled shirt. I guess I *could* make one myself, but dammit, I'm lazy.

Hastily made Cleveland tourism plans

The wife and I are traveling to Cleveland, OH Tuesday and Wednesday this upcoming week. Neither of us have spent anytime there. Right now the only thing on our agenda is the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame Tuesday afternoon. Suggestions for the night? We enjoy...

-Independent, unique stores (especially bookstores)
-Vegetarian-friendly dining
-Live music of a very wide variety
-Botanical gardens, aquariums, museums, art galleries, etc
-Grabbing a drink or three at casual bars

We do not enjoy...
-Crowds
-Clubs with untz untz music

Our hotel is pretty close to the RnR Hall of Fame, so anything proximal would be great, but we'll have a car available for use also.

Thanks!

Cleveland fashion help: awesome shoestore and a decent tailor. While Nordstrom's has its place for shoes, I wonder if there are any cool local Cleveland shoe stores, preferably on the East side (but distance is no object!) ... and while you're at it, can you recommend a tailor who can hem jeans the right way (i.e. so they look like a jean hem, not regular pants)? I've been burned by a tailor who shall remain nameless (rhymes with Schmeits, on Schmoventry) and my jeans look dorky.

How to buy my own Health Insurance in Cleveland?

I pay for my own health insurance in NYC (via Freelancer's Union) and am moving to Cleveland.

Freelancer's Union has a deal in place where, if I remain a member, I can buy insurance through a company called Golden Rule, but there appear to be no advantages of going that route.

So, anyone in Cleveland familiar with self-insurance options? Or a reputable broker?

Classy Cleveland

Cleveland Style Filter: I need a unique, funky, cocktail-esque dress for a formal (but funky) event. Help me find a fabulous boutique in Cleveland! Ok, actually, it's two different events, the dress code for one of which was described as "rock and roll chic" and the other as black tie. I'm 30 and not about to wear a ball gown, but I could use something cute, different from the average dress (I tend toward more unique styles) and in a cocktail dress. At any rate, I found a few things online, but I'm just not convinced. I'd rather patronize a local boutique and spend the cash here in poor lil Cleveland than online. At any rate, my budget is around $120, give or take, and if you have any suggestions, that'd be great. I live on the west side, but I'm willing to go east (especially because I suspect that there might be more over there). I like this (a little too informal, I think, unless I pair it with a killer top) and this (maybe a little too predicable?). At any rate, I'll take whatever suggestions you have! I'm rambling now! Oh, and it does NOT have to be a black dress. I love color, too! Thanks in advance!

I don't have a car. Help me get from Philadelphia to Cleveland, and back, this August on the cheap. I'm going to Cleveland the last weekend of August for DEVOtional 2009. Last year, I bummed a ride out with the guy who drums for the DEVO Tribute band who perfoms, but I'd like to get out there my own way this year. I'd also like to avoid Greyhound if possible: I had a rather bad experience taking it back home from Cleveland.
Soccer field in Cleveland?

I'll be in Cleveland this summer, and staying for a while, and I'd like to organize a weekly adult co-ed soccer game.

Help me be employed in Cleveland

ClevelandFilter: advice for Web product manager/UX person moving to the Cleve without knowing anyone local and hoping to have a job sooner rather than later. Pretty much self-explanatory. The Arthur family is likely to be moving to Cleveland for Mr. Arthur's job. I'll be trying to find full-time and/or freelance work, and am pretty flexible within my field -- I've got business, information science and UX expertise. Any organizations or techniques you can recommend for networking in Cleveland?

For the record, my current methods include:

-Obviously, applying to posted jobs
-Trying to hook up with local recruiters, if any appropriate ones exist
-LinkedIn networking (Introductions, etc.)
-Actually finishing up my About Me freelance site
-Looking for volunteer opportunities to build my freelance portfolio
-Finding meetup type... meetups where i can, um, meet up with folks in similar areas
-Avoid making Cuyahoga-on-fire jokes that will date me and make everyone hate me

Your thoughts and suggestions will be invaluable.

Grieving for my mom; looking for a DBT perspective; she was young

I live in the Cleveland, Ohio area (live in upper far east side, work in lower far east side) and am looking for grief resources for any of the following:

people with a DBT background who are grieving, people in their 20s who are grieving, people whose parents died young, "radical Catholics" or "glass-half-full agnostics" who are grieving, Italian-Americans who are grieving a fellow Italian, people who are grieving a loved one that died of a liver ailment.

I am kind of an introvert, so while getting a feel for what groups are out there is good, I could also use websites, books, etc. re: same. Thanks. Further notes that may help you help me (and honestly maybe some of this is just talking about it, which they say helps):

My mom died a month ago today of autoimmune hepatitis. She was 52. She died at home, though she had been in and out of nursing homes and hospitals a lot. Though apparently she died from the liver failure itself, she had a lot of infections, as well as complications from the steroids she was taking to try and preserve her liver. She had a great deal of osteoporosis and neuralgia for the last year or so, and she'd had diabetes. So she was a far cry from the person I was used to interacting with even only a couple of years ago.

She had varying degrees of ammonia in her blood because her liver wasn't disposing of all the toxins, so one thing I am trying to sort out is whether she meant some things she said in the past year or so, or if that was the ammonia talking. That said, I know we both loved each other very much, and I think we both said what we needed to to each other with a clear head before she died.

She died in the house I am currently living in with my dad, where I've lived for 20 years except when I was off to college. I had put off moving out because of what was going on, and now I think I should move on and do that, but in a way that isn't too disruptive for my father. He and I both have plenty of relatives in the Cleveland area looking out for us. We'll see each other often, both alone and with our other family.

Though I took DBT group therapy when I was about 20, I do not fit the diagnostic criteria for BPD, and I feel worlds away from the person I was when I was 20. I have previously had depression, but I do not feel that my grief has moved beyond "normal" grief into anything else. In fact, when I went through a sort of denial period, I was worried that when I was eventually slammed with the reality of my mom's death, that it would be too big and I would need to move quickly and effectively to avoid crisis, but reality hit, I am not in crisis and now feel that as long as I am proactive and conscious of my grieving process, make time to cry and go through memories, that will not be a concern.

Her birthday is coming up in mid-September and I want to be ready, if that makes sense.

Where can I find literary magazines in Cleveland?

Clevelandfilter: Where can I find literary magazines in Cleveland? Or, more specifically, where can my mom? I've had some short stories come out in journals lately, and I think it would be more fun for her to go to a bookstore and buy them herself instead of me just handing her a copy. Problem is, I haven't lived there in 10 years and don't know where to send her. I've called a few places (Joseph Beth in Shaker Square, B&N at Eton, etc.) and they didn't seem to have any idea what I meant by "literary magazine" even when I gave examples. Anyone know Cleveland bookstores, preferably downtown or on the east side, that carry lit mags like Triquarterly, etc.?

Blog Cleveland?

Cleveland filter: New job, new city! Fun, hip, alternative, informative blogs? So I just got a cool job in Cleveland, and I'll be migrating from Austin, Texas. I am SO sad to leave Austin, although I am excited about the new opportunities in Cleveland. I was wondering if you know of any alternative blogs that talk about organic living, indie music (kind of like this one in Columbus), liberal political themes, etc. in and around Cleveland. I found a good food blog, and a neat all-purpose commentary on Cleveland blog, but I'm looking for more.

Help me, Clevelanders!

Selling gold in Cleveland

I just got laid off from my job.

Considering that I haven't worn my gold college ring in close to two decades, I'd like to sell it. However, the various "send us your gold" services advertised on television supposedly pay far below the market rate, and there's no New York City-style gold and jewelery merchants in the area.

So, where can I sell a gold ring in Cleveland, and get a fair price for it?

Cleveland wedding planner recommendations

Can you recommend a wedding planner in or near to Cleveland? We're getting married in about a year. We'd like someone else to do the heavy lifting for us. We live in California so we have to plan long distance, and we want to avoid the stress of making a million decisions and juggling a score of vendors ourselves.

Also, bonus points if you can recommend an irreligious venue.

I tried googling for this but it was a spam disaster.

New to Cleveland. Where's the gamers?

I'm a computer game developer and video game player, who just moved to Cleveland, Ohio. I wanna meet new friends and hang out with peers. I've been looking for developer meetups, lan parties, lan centers (cyber cafes), and/or the center-of-gravity shop in these parts, with little luck.

Please help me out!

Are real estate prices in Cleveland too good to be true?

Are real estate prices in Cleveland too good to be true? My wife and I are moving to Cleveland for four years of medical school at Case. When looking at housing options we noticed the very affordable cost of buying a home.

So what's the deal with these $60 - 80k homes in Cleveland Heights? Is it a stagnant market? Why are there so many for sale? If we buy one of these are we going to have trouble selling in four years? Are we going to lose money? Should we just be looking for a rental?

It looks like a great neighborhood, close to Case, University Cir., Shaker Square, Tremont, etc. with nice little houses and tree-lined streets. In our current mid-sized city, houses in such a neighborhood run $200k+

Should we be looking somewhere else that meets these criteria?

[sidenote] I've found a wealth of great info about Cleveland here on AskMeFi. Thanks! We're looking forward to the move.

Need Ideas for a Romantic/Fun Cleveland, Ohio Date

My significant other is coming to Cleveland, OH to visit. What should we do/eat to woo her to my city. She is coming the weekend of the 20th and I actually live 1.5 hours south of Cleveland but it is the biggest city in my area. I've been to a few downtown bars which I liked (Flannerys) but I'd like to get some tips from the locals. One of my ideas was to go to Pickwick and frollick but they have no acts that weekend.

I am planning on going to Marbella Friday night. I see it is in the warehouse district, I've heard about it, but is there anyting to do there for fun?

Your help is much appreciated.

Cleveland rocks, but what if you're in your late 30s?

Burning river filter: in the Cleveland area, there's a plethora of über-hipster joints and loud party bars catering to college students and members of Generation Y, and gin mills for the old-school union card-carrying blue-collar crowd. However, I haven't been able to find a place where a professional in their 30s or 40s would feel comfortable, especially on the East Side/[fill in the blank] Heights area. Does such a place exist? Better yet, does such a place exist that doesn't play music at ear-deafening volumes?

Is there anything fun to do in Cleveland?

Is there anything fun to do in Cleveland? Me and some buddies decided to pick a random city for a 48 hour excursion.... Cleveland was the winner.

Is it better to stay downtown, or some place like Westlake?

We're pretty tame guys. Drink a little, pretty laid back, and just looking for fun things that the locals do.

Any suggestions?
