What can I learn? (On a semi-flexible schedule). I'm in Montreal & would like to take a class in something. My problem is this: I feel like learning something new, but whenever I see a local/ community class that interests me, the date/time is usually inconvenient. I would love to have a list of instuctors (teaching either small groups or one-on-one would be ideal) of a wide range of topics who I could just call & set up a series of lessons. [more inside]

I want to teach myself to be more professional at digital video production. Are there any classes/seminars (online or in L.A.) that you'd recommend? If I could live in my dream world, I'd get to take the Travel Channel video course but without spending $2000 I don't have and having to drive to Santa Barbara for it. Thoughts? [more inside]

I want to learn metal crafts using a scribe/jeweler or marquetry saw and soldering. I live in Los Angeles (specifically Burbank) and I've tried vocational schools but can't find any specific courses, just entire certification programs in welding & such. I'm better learning when someone experienced is teaching and not from a book. I'm willing to pay for courses...just can't find any.

I want to make stuff and do stuff in the Boston area (accessible by the T) that's not intellectual and academic, and as a welcomed respite during grad school. A friend and I have been thinking about things like shop class (making stuff you can use is incredibly fulfilling!) or stilts walking, or something interesting and fun and active - besides a dance class, sports, or pottery class - that we can do with some regularity (once maybe twice a week). I don't know much about architecture, except that I really enjoying time looking at good examples of it - and will go see places just for that. A good friend is getting married September 1st and I'm interested in buying for her and the Mr. a certificate for an at-home cooking lesson for the two of them--they've taken cooking classes before and dug them so I thought it might be fun for them to do it at home in their new place with their new stuff. We/they live in Chicago--does anybody have any recommendations for places? I've come up with a few on Google but I want to see if anyone's had any personal experience with this since it seems a lot of it would depend on good customer service. thanks!
