Disclosing gender transition to a grandparent with Alzheimer's

My grandmother is elderly and has Alzheimer's. I grew up in a different country to where she lives and we don't share a common language, so our relationship has never been very close, but I love her immensely and I know she adores me too. Every Christmas we send each other a card - a tradition I look forward to very much - and since I started cohabiting with my partner six years ago, I have always signed the card from both of us. If I can't get the shoes, how about a nice um-ber-ella?

For Christmas my wife is interested in a pair of the upcoming Puma by Rihanna velvet creepers. I know that the previous releases in this line have sold out in hours. Now that it has been named Shoe of the Year and this release is dropping in primo holiday shopping season (December 8th) I assume this new set will be even harder to get. My questions are (1) How can I increase my chances of snagging a pair of these shoes online as part of the official sale? and (2) If strategy (1) fails, are there sneakerhead resellers where I can buy a pair after the fact for not too much of a premium on the purchase price? Eating in Paris at Christmas

I'm spending the week from Christmas Eve to New Years Eve in Paris. I'm curious what to expect as far as things (restaurants, shops, etc.) being closed. Our general plan is to wander around and look at stuff and be in Paris. I don't mind losing a day to formal sightseeing on Christmas Day itself; in fact I'm kind of looking forward to the quiet. I'm a little worried about food, though, especially because we arrive (via train from Munich) at noon on Christmas Eve. [more inside]

Somehow, Googling all Winter holidays does not help...

YouTube Filter: Help me remember a (popular?) YouTube video of yesteryear, that I watched in the mid-late 2000s! The video was ripped from a "local" style commercial/infomercial around "the Holidays" (e.g., Christmas, Hanukkah, et cetera). A crazed, totally bald man wished the audience a great [insert every western Winter holiday here]. He spoke in very intense, stilted speech: "MERRY. CHRIST. MAS." At one point, he just sings, "Kwanzaaaaaa!" It ends with him and his family wishing the audience a "Happy Holidays from [whatever business]!" ... He may have ran a car dealership? [more inside]

Movie where meat was the gift

I remember one scene from a movie -- but what movie is it? A boy is sitting on the floor watching TV. We know that the kid's dad is a butcher. The boy is thinking about what he wants for Christmas (there's a narrator) -- typical toys. The Dad walks in with a large package wrapped in white paper and throws it on the floor and says "Hey kid, Merry Christmas" in a totally flat tone. We know the package is a side of beef or something like that, but I can't remember how we know that. [more inside]

Best $50 gift for someone who loves camping?

Gift etiquette: Boss's children, holiday edition

My direct manager is having an open house / work-related party tonight (the 30th) and he has invited me and most of the department. We are planning on bringing a small 'host' gift, i.e. flowers or chocolates. Since it is so close to Christmas my wife thinks that we should also bring a small gift for each of my manager's two children (~6 and ~2 years old). Manhattan on 12/26?

We're thinking about making a quick visit to Manhattan the day after visiting my family in the Hudson Valley for Christmas. Is this a bad idea? If we decide to do it, what (other than the Midtown Xmas dept store display / Rockefeller Center sights, which I know about) would be good activities, including cheap but yummy lunch options, we might not have thought of. For reference, we visit NY a couple times a year, have done so by both train and car, just not usually at the holidays.

Suggestions for a Silly but Useful Gift

I'm looking for ideas for a gift for my cousin, specifically a gift that is silly or absurd but still useful.
