When it came time for me to think about where my life was going, my parents let me know a couple things:
- they made enough money that the Canadian government wouldn't let them off the hook for helping to pay for my education, so student loans were reduced.
- they weren't going to/weren't able to help me with paying for my education anyway.
Consequently I never went to college or university. I've managed all right without any training or degrees, though not as well as I likely would have. I suspect I will never have time/opportunity/money to fix this.
My daughter will be born in late June. What can I do now (in Canada) to make sure she has better opportunities than I did?

How to best teach children memory techniques to remember long numbers? I'm talking of mnemo techniques where you associate pictures to numbers. Like a wheel represents 0, a candle represents 1, a swan represents 2, etc. I know how to learn these as an adult, but are there any strategies adapted to children?

My teenage son is way too involved with IM and a MUD, to the exclusion of his homework, and it's turning into a real problem. He needs the Internet for his homework, so we don't want to cut him off, just restrict some of the services he's over-using. But our DSL modem won't allow us to implement the restrictions we need. Schoolyard game identification: Everyone gathers around one spot, and one player bounces/throws a playground ball as high as they can (and shouts the name of the game?). While the ball is in the air, everyone else runs out from the center. When the person in the center catches the ball, they shout, "Stop!" and everyone has to hold their place. Then the person in the middle tries to hit someone with the ball. What game is this, and what are the rest of the rules?

So I'm in China teaching English to a batch of little Asianlings, and both I and the kids despise the English-language music they're forced to learn. "Apple apple I love you"??? We can do better, folks. I've tracked down the original "Bananaphone" by Raffi and had amazing success with it, but I need more kooky, interesting, easy-to-understand music for kids. Ideas?

Why did you choose to have a baby?
I'm trying to get inside the mindset of people who are older than I am and in a very different part of their life. If you're someone who has always planned on having a family, why did you always plan on it and how do you feel about it now? If you never planned on a family and changed your mind, what made you change your mind? If you never planned on children but one come along by accident, how do you feel about them now? I'm looking for personal stories/anecdotes/opinions about it, not so much statistics or figures.
