Mini McGee is suddenly very interested in heroes (especially when they do some rescuing). I'd like to get some more children's books about heroes for him (and his brother), especially if they are a little off-beat.

Children's novel: Protagonist is the son of deceased missionaries, retaining only a comforter and a photograph. He lives with an aunt and uncle, and the plot concerns his reintegration into non-missionary society. Setting is an island in New England, and there are scenes of driving on the ice in the winter to get to the mainland.

I'm trying to remember a children's book. There is an explosive so powerful that a single grain of it would cause a huge blast. It is in the possession of a sinister person. Our tiny hero rides a bird, steals the explosive, and (spoiler) drops it in the ocean, where it detonates relatively harmlessly.
