I'm currently studying law in a UK university, and am contemplating taking a semester off beginning August 2014 (about 4 months) to work and travel. The plan right now is to move to another city/country and work and stay there, and on the top of my list at the moment is Chicago. How viable is this? [more inside]
My fiancee are moving to Chicago in a month and are trying to get a handle on where safe places to live are. I am starting grad school at UIC and won't have a lot of income. I tend to be skeptical of claims that neighborhoods are "sketchy" because this is often rooted more in perception than reality. For reference, I've lived in the Petworth area of DC for several years now, and have always felt comfortable and haven't personally experienced crime. However, I'm not quite as familiar with Chicago and I wouldn't want to end up in a situation where my safety is compromised. Right now I am specifically checking out a couple places near Division & Rockwell. Does that raise any red flags? I know the area around Humboldt Park tends to have a bad reputation. We are also keeping our eye on Logan Square and Pilsen. Any thoughts?
Where's a good place to get all gussied up and go out to eat in Chicago? [more inside]
Purchased a new vehicle on June 7th of this year. According to the law I have to purchase my city sticker by July 7th; tried going online to purchase but that only works for existing vehicle renewals. It appears that the majority of locations that sell stickers are currency exchanges that charge a 5.50 service fee. [more inside]
Hi hivemind - My wife and I have been living in Chicago for a while now and just got a house (Western burbs if it matters). Now that we have space and a yard, I'd really like to help her find a puppy. [more inside]
I am doing a fundraising event tomorrow evening at Reza's Restaurant in the River North neighborhood of Chicago, in a second floor private room. I was just informed that two guests who use motorized wheelchairs are coming. When I called Reza's to double check the capacity of their lift, they said it cannot accommodate the weight of motorized chairs. Legality and ADA-compliance aside, I want to make sure that all of my guests can get to the event. Where can I rent either a ramp (because the restaurant does not have one of their own) or a light, airport-style wheelchair TOMORROW?
I recently accepted a job at the University of Chicago, and my husband and I are looking to move to Hyde Park in early August. What are some resources that can help us with our apartment search? [more inside]
Could you look over my preliminary agenda and fill in the gaps? [more inside]
My SO and I are planning a long weekend trip up to Chicago with another couple in the fall. Wondering about the places to stay and things to do. We will most likely be driving so we'll have a car to get around town, so where we stay doesn't neccesarily have to be in the hub of all the touristy crap that we'll no doubt want to do at some point. I'm more concerned about other things. Details inside. [more inside]
A relative needs to brush up on Chicago driving; they have a license, so the basics are all there, but they need more practice. Any thoughts on where to get lessons? [more inside]
The next city I live in will be the city where I start taking hormones and eventually try to pass as female in public. Should it be Chicago or Seattle? [more inside]
I would like to take some photographs of spiral staircases. I’m looking to capture the basic construction of the object from its components, rather than any particular aesthetic beauty. Simpler would be better, and emphasizing the engineering over the architecture. If possible, I would prefer to take my photographs at a quiet time in a public building walkable from the loop in Chicago. Do you have any suggestions?
Hello darlings. I'd like your help, specifically in the form of looking at a painting and telling me if you recognize any parts of it from the city you live in, especially if that city is Boston. There's a fair amount of background in terms of what to look for, so please do bear with me. It's all relevant, I promise. [more inside]

My friend and I are planning a one-way road trip from Denver, CO to Rochester, NY this June. The catch? We would like to complete it in around 7 days. I'm looking for your insight on how to make the most of the cities along our route in a limited amount of time (probably about 5 hours of exploring), suggestions for a better route, or general road trip advice. Hey All, I would love some advice. I am not sure what to do. So I am going to grad school in health policy. Option A is to attend a University in Boston. I have applied and been accepted. Now Boston is twice as expensive as the local university in Chicago. However, I plan to apply for a scholarship to attend Boston. I will not find out if I am awarded this scholarship until the summer. If I am a recipient of the scholarship it comes with a 50% tuition waiver. One of the benefits of the scholarship is that there is a leadership development component and you are assigned a mentor, who is a leader in the field, in the Boston area. To apply for the scholarship, I have to commit and accept the offer to attend the school. However, if I do not get the scholarship, I would financially not be able to attend the school. So you might be able to see where this is going. On the one hand, I would like to start looking for housing and a roommate in Boston (I understand cost of living is much higher than Chicago, so I am a little freaked about that) right now, but how can I do this if I do not know if I will be attending the program? I had to do this last year for San Francisco. This year, it's in Chicago! I'm looking for a place that can comfortably seat a group of 7 for an informal lunch meeting. It has to be within a five-minute walk of the Chicago Hilton, reasonably priced, decent food, and have a semi-quiet environment. I see some possibilities on Yelp, but it's hard to judge from there whether they'd actually be suitable. Any kind of food is fine, but vegan/vegetarian recommendations are especially welcome. Thank you for your help!
Getting married in Oak Park, I'll., this weekend and I'm looking for recommendations for a bar that would be good for a small group of people to hang out in at night after the planned events are over. [more inside]

Just moved into a new apartment. YAY! The apartment is in terrible shape. Boo. Our move-in condition form has the following clause, "I understand that the management company has also performed an inspection of the property, including digital photographs of all areas, and said report will prevail in any instances of conflicts." They will not show me their inspection report. How do I ensure that theirs doesn't say that everything is fine, and we get dinged for a whole ton of stuff that's already bad. Jurisdiction: Chicago. I used to practice at a Buddhist Center in Columbus, Ohio (KTC, on Grubb St). I am trying to find a center in Chicago. I really love the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh. I also enjoy podcast teacher Gil Fronsdal from the Insight Meditation Center in Cali, which is in the Vipassana tradition. I also enjoy Deer Park Dharma cast which is associated with Thich Nhat Hanh. I would like to find a center in Chicago to help me build a mediation practice, and obviously, mediate with others. To be able to listen to great dharma talks in person, not just on my ipod. And, to be a part of a community. It just doesn't feel the same listening on my ipod, you know? I do not have a car. I have gone to weird a$$ places in Asheville, NC, where random people start there own sangas and ask you for $, and I and not up for that. So, I thought it to be better to ask here than to do the google search. Please let me know if you have thoughts on where I can find a practice center. Also, I know that there is a school of Buddhist Psychology. Where might I find a Buddhist Therapist in Chicago?
Asking for a friend... just what it says on the tin. She's visiting her partner while he's on an extended work trip; he's in Kendallville, Indiana, but there are no decent accommodations there. His office suggested she stay somewhere in Chicago. Where's someplace nice in the Chicago area, not too spendy, and within easy reach of Kendallville?

I have a few 14 year old suburban girls to escort on a fun day into the city of Chicago. Looking for a mild adventure, but I am somewhat new to the area. If we were back in the DC area, I might take them by metro up to GWU for a tour and lunch, then walk down to Georgetown for some shopping and then walk down to the river and take a boat back to Alexandria, seeing a few highlights along the way. Anything similar we could do for a day in Chicago? Wicker park? We can come in on the UP-NW Metra.
I'm planning a nice pre-wedding brunch on a Saturday in May for a friend who lives in Oak Brook, Illinois, but I live in LA and don't know any restaurants in that area. Any suggestions from Chicago MeFites? [more inside]

Chicago MeFites: please tell me of your glorious dentists! Or warn me off of the terrible ones. I need a dentist for cleaning, probably at least one filling, and no doubt a referral to an oral surgeon (impacted wisdom teeth.) North side or Loop vastly preferred, as I have no car. [more inside]

I have a Toshiba 35" TV from the mid-90s that still works perfectly. I still have the manual it came with, and the original remote.
