My wife and I will be moving across an ocean(the atlantic - from Birmingham, UK to Chicago) in a couple of months and in the process I will be abandoning 87.6% of my stuff (everything but sentimental knick-knacks, some clothing and laptops). I'd like advice on rebuilding my stuff collection - furniture, appliances, kitchen utensils and all the other stuff you need to make an apartment livable. What would you do if you could do it all over again?

Obama SWAG in Chicago---where can I get some fast and in person? Leaving for Ethiopia in a matter of days and I've received a request from someone there for anything "Obama"...t-shirt, pins, posters, etc. But I don't have much time and anything ordered from the campaign store online will not arrive in time (they don't have an option for faster shipping.) Are there any brick and mortar stores in Chicago where I can pick something up?

Need to buy a fancy evening dress. Don't want to buy a basic LBD, and want mini or knee length - not full length. Prefer a little funkier perhaps. Any suggestions where? The boutiques I frequent don't do a lot of fancy dresses, so I'm lost. Of course there are the dept stores but would love to avoid if possible.

Where would you buy a waistcoat (you know, like the vest part of a three piece suit) in Chicago? I know that All Saints has two in the fall line, but they (like the
department stores) are
both basic
black. Guy is looking for something a little more exciting, maybe with matching pants. I don't want the responsibility of sewing it myself (and pants are definitely beyond me, anyway). Custom is probably okay; online is okay; custom on-line is not preferred. He will not have the patience for going through vintage or consignment shops.

Why are 24/7 big-box stores so rare in Chicagoland?
I'm not talking just the downtown core or even the city itself. You have to drive nearly 30 miles from downtown to hit the first 24/7 Meijer in Schaumburg.
I'm comparing this to central Illinois which has nearly a dozen Super Walmarts for 300,000 people in a 25 mile radius.
Surely there is demand for 24/7 shopping in the city and the inner-ring suburbs.
