I need your help ID'ing an artist.

On the day of my grandmother's funeral 21 years ago, my family discovered that, prior to her death, she had written a letter addressed to me on the back of a painting that hung in her house. As you can imagine, the painting (and the letter, which I have preserved) has enormous sentimental value for me - I often tell people that in the case of a fire, the only thing I'm carrying out of here is my painting. The painting is signed with the name "Julian", but the handwriting does not match any of the Julians in the artist directory books at the Library of Congress (oh yeah, I went to the LOC to research this issue). Here is a photo! [more inside]

Chicago transit data art

Do you remember this? A Chicago artist collected data on his commute on the CTA for several months — I think the time the train came, maybe some other details like where it stopped on the platform — and then created a visualization of the data. The final chart was done by hand with paint, not on a computer. [more inside]

What U.S. cities are best for artists to make a living?

I live in Madison WI and am looking to move to a larger city, under the impression that being in a larger city will provide me with more exposure and greater opportunities. I was thinking of moving to the outskirts of Chicago because it's close to my family in Madison and I love it there. I also miss Denver CO where I was born, but am unsure what kind of an art community it has. Does anyone know what cities are best for making a living as an artist? I have a degree in illustration but am also trying to get into gallery shows as well if that helps. Thank you very much for any advice.

Nude Sarah Palin framing suggestions

I would like to frame a nude Sarah Palin poster

I was thinking something in the lines of them dogs playing poker type of frame.

Based on your suggestions, should I have the framing done in a mall? Anywhere else? I have no idea and obviously would not like being ripped off. Maybe $100 tops or the framing?

I'm visiting Chicago for the first time for the week leading up to, and including, the Memorial Day weekend. Advice? Transit tips? Cheap eats? Interesting events that week? So, I love Chicago mile-by-mile and the Stanford cityblock project. Lately I've been looking for other examples of this sort of meticulous documentation of the environment. Anyone got any leads? [more inside]
