Very old (70+ with one young one) friends getting together for a stroll around the campus and 'would like to wind up with a good cocktail (or two) in the environs. 'Been a long time since we were out there - anyone have any ideas on a nice place for us? Thanks very much.
We live on the 3rd (top) floor of a 100 year old 6 flat on the north side, near Wrigley Field (Go Cubs!) see details.... [more inside]
We're hitting up Chicago this week, from Wednesday through Sunday, for a wedding on Saturday. Looking for tips on what not to miss. [more inside]
You're driving from Michigan to Wisconsin, taking I-94 to I-90. You'll inevitably have to drive around Chicago, and want to stop for lunch or dinner somewhere in there. Where do you go? Difficulty level: no cheese-centric cuisine. [more inside]
My wife, our 15-year-old daughter and I are going to Chicago the last week of June (June 26 - July 1). We're looking for some ideas of things to do that AREN'T the usual highlights. [more inside]
Myself and my girlfriend will be in Seattle in September, hopefully stopping in Chicago for a day on the way back. As we're a little different, an interracial couple on the lookout for vegetarian or vegetarian friendly restaurants, I'm looking for information on travel and food to make the most of the trip. I will be working in Chicago. I do not want to live in Chicago. Where can I live and have a commute that's not a total nightmare? [more inside]

Near where I work, on a Chicago light pole at Adams & Michigan, is this sticker. Google doesn't yield much of anything useful. Can anyone enlighten me as to what it is, and what the code means?
I am buying my plane tickets for a trip this summer. One ticket has as its return a change of plane/layover time of 1hr 35m between the flight from Paris to Toronto and the flight from Toronto to Kansas City. Alternatively, I can go with a different flight that on the return goes from Paris to Chicago with a 2h 45m layover. I'm assuming the latter is the option I should go with due to Customs delays but want other traveler's opinions for confirmation. [more inside]
My wife is travelling to Chicago with our 7 year old son tomorrow, and she'll be in town through Wednesday. She really only has 2 items on her must-do list right now: the Field Museum & the Museum of Science and Industry. Any other ideas for off-beat food / additional attractions that might be in the same general areas? We can find the traditional "touristy" stuff easily enough, but I'd love to hear suggestions with more of a local flair - - the kind of things you'd never know to try unless someone tipped you off...
does anyone have experience with parking a car in chicago that has an expired registration??? asking for a friend - details after the jump. [more inside]
My fiancee just got accepted to medical school at UIC (University of Illinois at Chicago), so we're moving there in the next few months. Chicago's a big city, and we need to figure out how to start the apartment search. So...how do we do this? Are there standard questions about our priorities that we can answer in order to narrow down which neighborhood would suit us best? [more inside]
Chicago! I need your help finding a location for a photo shoot! [more inside]
All the owners in my 6-unit condo building pay different property tax rates. Some vary greatly (by several hundred dollars). How do I figure out if I am paying the correct (or lowest) amount I need to be paying? The building is in Chicago. The property tax situation here is messy and it is easy to be overcharged. Where do I go to figure this out? Preferably would not like to involve an attorney. [more inside]
My mother is having a milestone birthday, so I am trying to find a way of making the day fancy and indulgent and special. Difficulty level: Chicago, in the worst part of winter. [more inside]
I want to buy some lovely jewellery in Chicago next week, where should I go to look? [more inside]
Have you attended an intensive couples therapy retreat, or gone through an intensive couples therapy experience? Do you know about outstanding programs that are worth traveling for? Please, please share with us. My partner and I are going through a crisis, and we're looking into intensive couples therapy and retreats to jumpstart our work. We are interested in considering all excellent programs, but we are also open to hearing about terrific therapists in the Chicagoland area who may be willing to work with us intensively. If you worked with an amazing therapist in the Chicago area, please let us know. We are having a super difficult time right now and would be grateful for information and recommendations. Yesterday on the bus I saw a business card in the route map holder. It says Sanders For President across the top, a logo of Bernie (presidential seal) 2016 in the middle which caught my eye. Under that the card then had the name Andrew Nelson, Vice Presidential Candidate (D-Illinois), a phone number and an email with a .biz address, a P.O. Box and then www.BernieSanders.com. I live a couple of hours south of Chicago. Given a 4 hour driving radius, what would be a good place to go with a 14 month toddler? I don't expect her to make any memories from this trip, so it's really more of a trip for her parents (us!) . [more inside]
I'm looking for two hotels in Chicago, one convenient to Lincoln Park/Lakeview and the other one convenient to Wicker Park, for a weeklong stay for 3 people. A consideration is that we will have a car that we will be using frequently. [more inside]
I'm going to be visiting the University of Chicago for a few months (Jan-Marchish) in 2016. I probably will have the option of staying in one of their graduate student housing places. Looking at this map, which area should I aim for? [more inside]

I've been asked to edit a manuscript using the Chicago Manual of Style. I have only a glancing familiarity with this style from an editing point of view although as a reader/writer of fiction I know this is the standard in that publishing industry. As someone who mainly edits using (in decreasing order of familiarity) AP style, MLA style, and APA style, is it possible to give myself a crash course in Chicago? If so, what are the main differences I should keep an eye out for and potential quirks of the style I might not anticipate? [more inside]
I want to buy a good rug for my living room. [more inside]
I'm cat sitting in Chicago for a couple friends of mine who are on vacation. One of the three cats slunk out a gap in a window that I had left open to exhaust some of the kitty litter smell. I don't know anyone else here and I'm concerned about leaving the apartment because I don't want to be gone if the cat comes back. More specifics after the jump. [more inside]
One month until Dia de los Muertos! I have last year's ofrenda packed away carefully, including little purchases I've made throughout the year, but you gotta buy new pan de muerto ever year, you know? What panaderias in Chicago sell pan de muerto? And while we're at it, who sells sugar skulls? [more inside]
I would like to donate some money to a non-profit that works on issues related to environmental lead in Chicago, especially as it affects children. Advocacy, lobbying, policy work, education, direct lead remediation work, or any other kind of work on this issue would fit the bill. Who should I donate to? [more inside]
I'm visiting a bunch of US cities this month and next! Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Indianapolis, Chicago, Minneapolis, Denver/Boulder, Albuquerque and Los Angeles. I am looking for recommendations of things to do and/or folks to meet. [more inside]
This concerns my 26-yr-old daughter, who was released from the hospital 3 weeks ago Monday (here's that sorry story). She needs a psychiatrist for meds, and she wants to attend family therapy and also therapy for PTSD. The hospital recommended an outpatient program for Borderline Personality Disorder, but she's not interested—doesn't believe the label applies to her. For lack of a better word, I'm hoping to “sneak” in some extra therapy when setting up the sessions (sorta like I used to sneak vegetables into mac and cheese). [more inside]
Recommendations for wedding hair are needed! [more inside]
I'll be visiting Chicago from 9-24 through 9-30. I'm looking for recommendations on where to stay, hopefully near rail, places to eat, and suggestions on things to do besides what's covered in CityPass. Thanks.
We’ve never been to Chicago, but we’re moving there. A reconnaissance trip is in order! I’m looking for some pointers on what to do, where to go--and possibly also how to find an apartment. [more inside]
My initial ideas were that it provides shade or shielding, but I don't see any monitors or equipment that it shades, and it only covers a small part of the stop. I haven't noticed fringe at other stops. here is a picture.
My boyfriend and I are travel novices, so we need advice about whether this is an OK idea or a stupid plan. (Southwest Airlines/air travel edition.) [more inside]
My current roommate is taking a job across the country. For twenty-odd years, I've roomed with a friend or friends, so the last time I had to actually look for a roommate, I placed an ad in the paper. Ha ha ha. How does a single forty-something woman find a compatible roommate in Chicago nowadays? Note: Please do not suggest that I move out and find a studio or one-bedroom on my own. That is not on the table at the moment. [more inside]
My SO & I will be visiting Chicago next weekend - arriving at O'Hare on Friday morning, staying at the Hilton on Michigan Ave, departing O'Hare on Monday morning. We'd like to be able to use bus/train exclusively, so I'm looking for tips & tricks - what are the best apps to use, helpful hints on how/where to buy tickets, etc. Thanks in advance!
We're renting a tiny sports car and driving from Chicago to St. Louis and back on a 5 day weekend to visit some family. On the way back I would love to take the car off the freeway and maybe drive around some corners. [more inside]
We're looking for a *fancy* restaurant with an excellent cocktail menu that has at least one well-thought-out not-pasta-with-sad-veggies vegetarian entree in Chicago that IS NOT Green Zebra. Must take reservations and not be Asian food. Would like an entree option that is meat or fish. Who knew mixed marriage would be so hard? Places that have been suggested and the reasons they are not quite right inside. [more inside]
I am looking for a basic, but generally sophisticated/creative cocktail class that my girlfriend and I can attend together. [more inside]
My partner and I (both bisexual women) are looking for a therapist in Chicago for help with our sexual relationship, in particular with opening it up to new partners and dealing with the negative emotions that come with that. [more inside]
I am going to the Chicago shows. I have mail order commemorative tickets that are letter envelope sized with some amazing art work on the front of each ticket. I would like to keep the tickets and keep them in pristine condition. If I use them for entry, keeping them pristine much less keeping them at all is highly unlikely. It is a Dead show after all. Things happen. [more inside]
I'm meeting some friends for dinner in the Loop Tuesday night and they have three kids ten and under. I need recommendations for a fun place to take them for dinner that is kid-friendly, reasonably priced, interesting, and amenable to conversation. These kids are well-traveled and more adventurous than average, so it doesn't need to be generic and boring, but there should be some hook that will draw them in. Ideas?
So I own a condo in a building built in the 30s in Chicago. It was repointed in the last few years but there is a wall that is very close to another building that was not touched and seems to have next to no mortar left in it. More inside. [more inside]
I will be traveling to Chicago June 15-19 for work, but I will have my evenings/nights free Monday-Thursday of that week. I have done all the touristy things more times than I care to admit, so I would like to do some obscure, off-the-beaten path type things that I normally don't get to do back home. What can I do? Or, better, what resources can I be pointed to so I can help myself find something to do? I define "obscure" after the jump. [more inside]
We have a move scheduled soon with a company we've used before and are happy with. The SO has about 6-8 medium boxes worth of valuables and delicates she would like professionally packed before the move; the company we have can do this the same day but has indicated this would result in delays and does not recommend it, and they are unable to send someone the day before. Is there anyone that will help us with just the packing part? [more inside]
Where can I eat as I travel from O'Hare to Champaign, IL on a Friday night, and then from Champaign to Midway on Sunday late afternoon? [more inside]
I have spent enough time indoors to last the rest of my life, I want to start sleeping outside more. I'm looking for places to wilderness camp near Chicago and I'm having trouble finding any. I've gone camping at a few drive-in type sites and that's not really what I'm looking for. I don't want to be around people watching TV in their RV. I want to be shitting in the woods. I have a hammock and a stove, where should I go within a days drive of Chicago that is actually wild?
I'm planning a bachelor party for ~7 people in Chicago. The main event will be going to a Cub-White Sox game. [more inside]
