I love Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City. It's a non-fiction book about Chicago in 1893 which reads much like a novel. I'd like to read other books written in the same novel-esque style about some other cities or historic events. Know of any novel-like non-fiction reads?

I work for a smallish non-profit that is looking to outfit a conference room with some A/V equipment (projector, probably an additional plasma or two, presentation station, sound, etc.), and I'm having trouble finding someone in Chicago to help out with this. Google reveals a bunch of people who want to repaint my room and buy all new furniture, but I just need A/V help. Do you know any people / companies here that can help? [more inside]

I suddenly find I am going to be in the Windy City next weekend and would love to score tix to the Friday afternoon Cubs/White Sox game at US Cell. What's the best reliable way to get tix? In the past I have had no problem getting tix from scalpers out front of Wrigley. Is it the same at US Cell? Otherwise, any suggestions? Ticketmaster is useless and I hate them.

Why are 24/7 big-box stores so rare in Chicagoland?
I'm not talking just the downtown core or even the city itself. You have to drive nearly 30 miles from downtown to hit the first 24/7 Meijer in Schaumburg.
I'm comparing this to central Illinois which has nearly a dozen Super Walmarts for 300,000 people in a 25 mile radius.
Surely there is demand for 24/7 shopping in the city and the inner-ring suburbs.

I am planning a trip to Chicago this weekend, and my goal is to learn the L by picking fun stops across the city (my husband and I are ex-New Yorkers who love mass transit.) What are some suggestions for fun places to shop/eat/sight-see that are close to L stops? Our starting point is Diversey and N Clark, but we hope to cover a lot of territory. Please include descriptions about your recommendations and (of course) the nearest L station name.

This is actually a two part question. First, can anybody recommend a folding bicycle? I'm going to need to travel from a train to my work and it's about 2 miles. Would you recommend one of these bicycles for this kind of commute? How do they hold up in the rain and when it gets cold? Is there anything I can do about water flying up from the front and rear wheels?

Help me find places to eat in Chicago. I don't think I've been to a bad restaurant there, but I'm looking for new places, plus I'm looking to save money on this trip. For added difficulty, 2/3 of my entourage will be vegetarian, so a variety for them would be nice. [more inside]

I need to have an older pair of Soloman inline skates serviced - they need new axles. However - I don't know the model name for this specific pair. The only marking on the skates is Powerarch DR85. Poking around online reveals several sources for axles - but I don't know what size to order.
Anyone know what I need to order (specifically?) Or is there a great skate shop in Chicago where I could have these serviced?
And - unfortunately - I don't have the old axles.
Thanks!

The Hancock building in Chicago has two different tower lighting systems. During the night the antenna structures have red lights to warn away aircraft. During the day the towers have strobes. Since I was a kid the towers always had red lights. Why did they make the change? It seems like two different systems would need twice as much maintenance.

I'm moving to Chicago in the fall. I have no job prospects at the moment, but I'd like to before I get there. Ideally I would like to work for a non-profit theater in some capacity to build up my applicable skills for later on, but ultimately I'd be fine working for any kind of non-profit. I've found a few websites with job listings, and I know I should probably start sending out my resume to places I'd like to work that don't have current postings, but I'm not quite clear on the timing. It seems awkward to say, "Hello, I'd like this job... in 4 months." But I don't want to arrive with a lease, a rapidly diminishing bank account and nothing else. Advice?
If nothing comes through, I will become a barista. Again. But I'd rather not.

My car was just totaled by an unlicensed, uninsured 16-year-old driver in Chicago. I'm insured, but I have no collision coverage, so any/all expenses are strictly out-of-pocket. The teen responsible was found to be 100% liable on the police report. Can/should I take the family to small claims court?
