HardiPlank Installation: The installation instructions (pdf) for the brand of siding the house I live in has installed says that it needs to be caulked at the edges and that trim should be installed first, and then the siding should butt up against it. This was done at the corners, but at the windows, the trim was installed over top of the hardiplank. The instructions don't say anything about windows. Is it installed correctly?

The caulk along the floor of our shower had started to get moldy after a couple years in a new house, so we removed it and recaulked (with a "kitchen-and-bath" adhesive caulk). Worked great along three of the four edges -- but the fourth edge, along the metal frame under the shower door where the 1" metal frame meets the lip of the shower floor -- wouldn't seal (wouldn't even cure -- was still mushy) after 72 hours. Pulled it up, and discovered that although the area had been dry to the touch, enough water had still been under/inside the frame to soak a paper towel slid through the joint between frame and the floor. Questions about 2nd coats. 1) DECK: Just stained deck two days ago with a semi-transparent latex deck stain ("Weatherbeater" brand). Unfortunately it dried a little unevenly, showing brush marks, so there are lighter and darker patches. Can I apply a second coat, or will that peal once the rain comes? 2) TUB: re-caulked around tub yesterday. Aesthetically it might look better if I could apply another layer of caulk to smooth out edges and make a little thicker (used white silicone bathroom stuff), but will the fresh caulk adhere properly to the 24-hour cured caulk? I had to scrape the bejesus out of the gap to get the old caulk out, and I don't want to risk the new caulk job failing.

My tub was/is moldy. Out of frustration over smell and look, I decided tonight to take care of it and destroy the offending mold for the 90th time. I've had really bad luck with caulk in the past and I don't think I'm up to spending another 6 hours thoroughly cleaning it when the caulk I've been using fails again. What are your recommendations? Both for caulk types and caulking tips? [more inside]

For you home improvement types - we moved into our first house last July, and since then I've been battling some mold in the shower. It's not bad, but despite my attempts to banish it, the critters keep coming back - right at the seam where the shower wall meets the tub.

Will simply recaulking the seam fix it, or will it eventually come back through the new caulk as well? Any, ahem, natural remedies for ridding our shower of the stuff?
