Companion kitty: the seekening

My adorable 7-month-old (ish) kitten Milo is not always as restful as the pictures make him seem. He has lots of energy and wants lots of play. I try to keep him entertained but I think he may need another little bundle of furry energy. I have only ever been a single-kitty household, so I have some questions. [more inside]

Our new cat needs help, and so do we.

We just adopted a cat from a local rescue group, primarily to keep our current cat company, since we just lost two cats to old age. But the situation is not what we expected, and not what I have ever had to deal with before, after a lifetime of cats. [more inside]

Can I convert Feliway plug-in diffuser liquid to a spray?

I bought a lot of Feliway plug-in diffuser refills but this morning the diffuser started smoking, which I've since learned is a very common occurrence. Can I take the liquid and dilute it to use as a spray, or is there something dangerous about it?

I'm a gardening dummy and bought and potted an herb without really confirming what it is. I originally thought it was thyme but it's obviously not thyme. Here is a photograph of said plant. 1. What is this plant? 2. Is it safe if my cat nibbles it? 3. Any advice on how to avoid killing it?

My cat's been biting humans out of the blue

We adopted a cat a couple of months ago. He's about five, and in good health according to the vet. (He was surrendered to a local SPCA for financial reasons.) Starting about a month ago, he's started biting people. He'll get very close, his eyes will dilate, he'll extend his neck toward an arm or leg and he'll often let out a relatively long, complaining meow and then chomp down on the limb. It's scaring the shit out of me and my wife. [more inside]

Lasers- more effective than laying on hands?

My veterinarian has recently started using "healing lasers" as part of dental treatments, among other things. The information they provided said that the laser is used outside the animal's mouth, and it... somehow penetrates and reduces pain and inflammation? The poop is definitely in the box (er, raised bed), how do I get it out

What do I do about the cat poop in my raised beds if I don't want to get rid of the cats? I have a little feral/community cat colony in my (urban) backyard. They have chosen two of my raised beds as their toilet. Now that the snow has melted the smell is kicking in. I don't want to drive the cats away, but I would like my backyard to not smell of sewage and maybe even use those beds for non-edibles. Anyone have ideas? [more inside]

Best flea control for cats while pregnant

We have two cats that sleep on our bed. I would love to know the safest flea control method to use during (human) pregnancy (not pregnant now but planning ahead). We've been using Advantage II, but it looks like prenatal exposure to one of the main ingredients - imidacloprid - by parents using the flea treatment in fact - was associated with autism spectrum disorders. What safer options are there? Thanks!

Stories of empathic cats

Here and elsewhere, I keep running into the sentiment that cats are adorable, fuzzy little psychopaths. They understand us but they don't care. They are self-absorbed. They only need us for food. They will gnaw on our corpses. That line of philosophy runs completely counter to my own experience with cats, three of whom were absolutely in love with me. I would like to read some positive articles, stories, etc about cats who defy the "fuzzy psychopath" stereotype. [more inside]

Cat Filter: One eye seems irritated.

My cat is keeping her left eye less open than the right one. It is a little watery, and the eyelid tissue seems a little inflamed. She is also sneezing a little. Other than that she seems normal. Vet checkup a month ago was fine. 13yo, indoor only. No other pets. You are not my vet, but at what point should I take her to the vet? How long (if at all) should I wait to see if it clears up? URGENT CAT HIDING QUESTION

I am watching my co-worker's cat because she had to move to a place where you can''t have cats. We can't find the cat and I am afraid she escaped from the house. However no one saw her run out of the door and no doors were left open. We have a resident cat who likes to run out of the house so we are extra careful when we leave. I think the cat might be hiding but my boyfriend thinks that is unlikely because he looked for her ALL day. Have you ever lost a cat inside your house?
