How much will this traumatized cat bounce back?

We are both experienced cat owners. In November, our beloved Tigger passed away; in December, we got three black cats from a shelter. Two of them are socialised and friendly, the third is not. (We knew this and we were willing to take the chance.) Third cat was raised in the house of a pet hoarder, who let them inbreed; he lived there with 65 cats (!) for 6 months to a year, and was then seized and brought to the shelter, where he stayed for a year and a half. How normal and happy can we expect this cat to turn out over time? [more inside]

cat in tree freezing

We moved yesterday. Our indoor cat hasn't used her litter or food all day. There is something cat-shaped with glowing eyes in a tree in our backyard about 30 ft up. It is below freezing (Arlington MA). What do we do? The local fire department says they don't do cats. I've been on hold with the emergency line for Angell Memorial for 5 min.

How do indoor/outdoor cats 'work'?

Asking for a friend: My friend wants to adopt a cat from an animal rescue centre. However, many of the shelters require access to a garden for their cats before they'll allow you to adopt (for example) - so the cat would have to be an indoor/outdoor cat. She is having trouble figuring out the logistics of this. [more inside]

Help me stop itching. I'm allergic to cats or water!

I regularly experience itching while at home, primarily on my shins, hips and lower back. I think I'm allergic to something in my water. I've long thought this was caused by soap as showers are when the itching is at it's worst, but after trial and error I've concluded that water is the cause. I've come to this conclusion by using a filter on my shower head which removes the problem after a few weeks. The problem is the showerhead with filter has caused many plumbing problems due to the reduced water pressure, so I'm back to the regular shower head. Is there another way to filter the water without causing plumbing problems, such as at the water heater itself? If not the water, could cats be the cause? [more inside]

How do I brush this cat?

I have never successfully brushed my cat. I even got a Furminator, which worked extremely well, the one time I managed to brush him for about 3 seconds. The problem is that he thinks it is a toy. In fact, I have never brought any object close to his little cat body that he has not playfully attacked unless asleep. It is definitely playful and not aggressive. I have also tried the method of slow acclimation, but this thing can go from peaceful/sleepy to attacky in an instant. [more inside]

What automatic feeder should we get for our cats?

my main coon cat Bear laughs at our anti cat devices and pounds on the door for breakfast. He started pounding at 5:00 a.m. this morning, 90 minutes before my alarm goes off, and kept it up long enough to ruin my sleep. It's time for a new strategy: automatic feeding devices. Please recommend the best device. [more inside]

Unwanted Stuff On My Cat

My cat had something on his fur, near his left rear thigh, that looked like a slug. It was about an inch long and 3-5mm wide, black, and shiny. He is a fraidy cat who will not tolerate being touched. He only just tolerates playing chases with a piece of string, so I spent some time with him this morning doing just that and trying to take a picture. I was not able to get a picture that was clear enough. He actually washed around whatever it was, but only once, and he didn't dislodge it in the process. We tried to catch him and failed. He got outside. Since he has so many hangups it is possible that he won't come back and likely that he won't trust us for another six months if he does. He only knows a few words, but "vet" is one of them and he has a very strong reaction to that one, so the effects of stuffing him into a pet carrier can only be imagined, even if we had any hope of accomplishing that now. So: what external feline parasite looks like a slug, is about an inch long and lurks on the fur near the thigh, and what do we do about it in the unlikely event that we get the chance?

One truck, two crazy felines, 1100+ miles to go...

So my three male kitties got neutered yesterday. They came home and spent most of the evening and night snarling and growling, keeping their distance from each other as much as possible in my tiny studio apartment. It makes sense - they were all in pain and shaking off the anesthesia. But today, everyone is feeling better: eating, playing, and acting like normal miscreants for the most part. Except that they seem to have picked up the very behaviors neutering is supposed to discourage. Aaaand in a few days, two of them are going to be traveling for 16 hours together in a dog kennel... My diabetic cat is compulsively walking in circles. What should I do?

My cat has been walking in counterclockwise circles pretty much constantly for an hour and a half. He seems a little agitated but basically okay, not shaking or crying or hyperventilating or anything like that. An hour ago he ate his normal dinner, circling between bites. From time to time he lies down, but even lying down he keeps looking over his shoulder to the left, then after a minute or so he rolls over (always in the same direction) and resumes circling. This kitty is 9 1/2 years old and was diagnosed with diabetes about a year and a half ago; I give him insulin shots twice daily. I thought this circling business might be hypoglycemia and mixed some syrup in with his food, but it doesn't seem to have helped much if at all. Google suggests everything from vestibular disease to an abscessed tooth to a stroke. What's going on? What should I do? Can I wait until my vet reopens at 8:00 tomorrow morning, or should I try to find an all-night animal hospital? [more inside]

Cat first aid advice needed

My 13yo cat has a head wound on her forehead by her eye that she will not stop itching. It started out as 3 small scratches (like our other cat had kicked her in the head or similar) but every time it scabs over she itches the scab off and so it has expanded into a hole in her head that is now encroaching on her eye. We've tried putting cat hydrocortisone and lidocaine cream around it, covering it up (can't find anything bandage-like that'll stay on her head), tying a sock on her itching foot (she yanks it off) and putting her in the cone of shame (she itches around it. Somehow). I'd like to avoid a vet visit if possible because they terrify her and I am poor.
