I want to be heroic but not, you know, in an inconvenient way.

I recently lost my cat, and I would like to go to the local humane society to adopt another one. I would like to find a balance between selecting a cat that would both best fit the requirements of our household and one that would probably a lower chance of being adopted. Can you help me identify traits to look for? [more inside]

Questions on adopting a dog, with consideration for desert and a baby

My wife and I have talked of adopting a dog for a while. Following the untimely passing of one of our cats, this is more feasible, and could help console us. But we have questions for adopting a dog in our desert climate, and on dogs coming into a family with a baby, and a cat. And we're concerned about being good owners, as our time at home is limited during the week. Also, we're discussing what a good age range for an adoptable dog would be. Details inside. [more inside]

How do I find information about cat personality research?

Librarians? Anyone? I'm looking for information on describing and/or predicting cat personality characteristics. I've been trying to find a library (or otherwise borrowable) copy of the ASPCA's "Meet Your Match Feline-ality guide" somewhere, or science/research/articles about it. No hits in WorldCat. Is it hopeless? [more inside]

What is the best way to find a new home for adult cats?

You have a friend with two well-behaved adult cats. He does not want the two cats any more. You want to give them to the Best Home Humanly Possible (not a rescue organization, ideally) and so far can't find any friends or family who can take them in. You posted your Craigslist ad with the adorable picture of them grooming each other, and now what? [more inside]

Should we adopt this pair of kittens to keep our rambunctious terminally ill cat company?

We currently have one highly social special needs cat, Tux, and we absolutely need to adopt a kitten to keep him company. Due to his medical condition, Tux may or may not be with us for much longer. The problem is, the kitten we're in love with is part of a set. Is adopting 2 kittens a good idea, or should we split the pair? [more inside]

Homeless kittens are the saddest kittens!

We've just started fostering a kitten from a local shelter. It's not only our responsibility to socialize him, but to also try to get him adopted. Two-fold question: how do we best use our networks to spread the word without resorting to Craigslist? And since we're supposed to take pictures and videos, we need suggestions on how to make the kitten look extra cute and personable, and therefore more appealing to potential adopters who view his profile online.
