Seeking vet for cat with joint, skeletal, or related problem

Artemis is an awesome cat in Durham/Chapel Hill, NC, who walks, runs, and jumps, but not as well as she should. One vet, in March, found nothing wrong; another, in June, saw she was walking oddly and said to wait a while to see if it got better on its own. Now I'm looking for a vet with expertise or interest in feline musculo-skeletal issues for the next steps. [more inside]

Mouthful of cat medicine

I was fighting with the cat this morning trying to get him to take clindamyacin hydrochloride which had been proscribed after dental surgery. Anyway, he was wriggling all around and the dropper squirted everywhere and not quite sure how it happened but I ended up with a mouthful of cat medicine. I rinsed my mouth out a few times. I figured this was probably not toxic since regular clindamycin is a people drug, but do I need to call anyone to confirm this?

How to transition a cat to free feed

So since we got Molly, she's been a joy. But we're still trying to settle into a feeding regimen. We're currently on a morning feed (wet), an after work feed (wet), and a right before bed snack (high quality dry). It's fine, but it would be great if it could be a bit more flexible or less frequent. I wonder if we could put her on a free feed system like my friend does with her two cats, but I'm scared of overfeeding her. Does anyone have advice on how we could try transitioning to that sort of thing? I'm not sure about doing it gradually because I feel like that would just make her eat more and more. But if we just go straight to an always full bowl, will she just gorge herself all of a sudden and make herself sick?

Mean cat. No, REALLY mean. Find us a vet in Austin who can handle that?

Our cat is terrified of strangers to the point of serious violence. (We have both owned reasonably shy and standoffish cats before. This one is worse than any other cat we've known — the bites and scratches he gives people who pick him up are sometimes not just warning nips but serious attacks. We are almost certain he was abused before we adopted him, for this and other reasons.) We need to find a vet in Austin, TX where we can take him. We have already been asked not to return to Animal Trustees, the discount vet clinic in town, because he clawed a vet tech there, so we are worried that he will be unwelcome other places as well. Suggestions? [more inside]

My cat is bored and I am lazy. Cat fishing rod construction ideas?

My cat is constantly begging for play and I am mostly game but also want to get some rest once in a while. She is mostly bored with the usual rotated toys - ping pong balls, toilet paper rolls and such. Her big thing is stick and string combos and old shoe laces but she is even bored with those sometimes plus their restricted range means she doesn't really got run around after them that much. I was thinking some sort of fishing rod hybrid could be dr. frankenstiened up but I don't fish so I am not sure of the details. Being efficient (lazy) I like the idea of casting and then reeling in from the luxury of the couch. [more inside]

Because shmoopybooplesnoogywiggums is too long

I have finally managed to talk my husband into getting a cat and here she is! She's about 1.5 years old, really affectionate, but not really the frisky type. She came with the name Skye but that's a bit too "stripper" for our tastes. She's been with us for a week and seems to be settling in ok and now that I've taken her to the vet's to be spayed, it's time we made her a permanent member of the family with a proper name. Previous AskMes show that you guys are really good at this and husband and I are terrible, so please hope us!

Did I bury my cat wrong?

I had to put my beloved cat down last week and I'm frankly stunned by how hard the grief has hit me. He showed up at my back door 14 years ago and never left. We had a great time together. I decided to bury him in the garden but when I got home I found I couldn't dig down further than about a 8-12 inches because of tree roots and sprinkler lines. I have a bad back already, so in a panic, I buried him in his towel at that depth and put a 38-pound paver stone on top. I have a fenced yard and only a few stray cats (I note the ones always bullying him have disappeared) and maybe a possum find their way in. Now I am wracked with anxiety, worrying that he is not safe and I should not have done it, and maybe I should dig him up and cremate him, which would be awful to imagine...I can't stand it. Is there some drawback to this more shallow grave I don't know about? No animal could lift that stone. So far this anxiety and fear is the worst part of it. So if you could allay my fears, I'd appreciate it.

Wheezy older cat?

For the last several of months our 21 year old Sita has become increasingly wheezy. In January and February, we only noticed the wheeze after a glucosamine treat in the mornings. Starting around the end of February/beginning of March, she became really wheezy when she purred hard. It sounded...wet? The wheeziness would get really bad, she would swallow/take a big gulp of air and then go back to a "normal" amount of wheeze. [more inside]

What's the best method to get this anxious kitty across the ol' USA?

Special Agent Dale Cooper is a very sweet, loving and lazy kitty. He is very happy living the simplest of lives - by day he lazes at the foot of my bed. He takes odd breaks to snack, or lie in his cat lounge. Every once in a while, when he needs to shake it up, he takes an adventure-tourism vacation to lounge on the bathmat. I am currently anticipating a job offer that will take him VERY far out of his comfort zone - clear across the country. Previous travels have been traumatic for Agent Cooper and his traveling companions (namely me, but also anyone in a small radius). I'll explain at length inside - warning: it's a little, but not terribly, gross. [more inside]

Do I fight to keep this kitty?

I'm having a battle of ownership over a cat. Back on January 29, when it was -50 C, I found a very cold and very friendly kitty on the street outside my house. I brought him inside, shut him up in my spare bedroom and stuck up lost cat posters all over the neighborhood. After two weeks with no response I took him to the vet, got his first shots and had him tested for FHIV, and started introducing him to my female kitty. That night I got a call from his owners, a (very poor, aboriginal) family who live in a small apartment on the corner facing my house. I took him back to them, told them that I'd had some of his shots done and that he'd need to be fixed; I gave them the name of the low-income clinic that does it for 25 bucks, and told the kid that I'd be happy to pay for the rest of the shots, too. I also told them that he shouldn't be outside in this cold. Then I went to Vancouver for February break. [more inside]
