It's another round of Name That Kitten! This lil fuzzbucket is coming to us next week with the placeholder name "MewMew". Which, no. We already have a cat named Goblin and are thinking we'd like a name that somewhat matches. Another entry from the Dungeons & Dragon's bestiary? Germanic mythology? Supernatural creatures? Please help us give poor MewMew a better nom de pet.
Hi my cat ate an elastic bunched up string [more inside]
My indoor cats have never had to deal with a loud, crowded airport before. They're never flown. We have to pick them up when we go through security, and one of them hates being picked up. I'm really worried about them getting overly stressed. I'm getting conflicting info about the effectiveness and side-effects of sedatives. [more inside]
I need advice from short hair cat breeds. I have a lovely Cornish Rex, Louise, who is white (and pink where her skin shows through). She gets dirty quickly, and I don't want to bathe her too frequently, because a) she doesn't like it, b) even though I towel her off, her little short curls and damp fur make her miserable and cold, and she's afraid of the hairdryer, and c) I don't want to dry her skin out, because it's so exposed... see inside for more fun Cornish Rex Facts!!! I went to Tahoe this weekend to ski, and it was raining so I adopted a cat instead... she needs a name! [more inside]
I come to this question via my beloved cat who is 17 years old and who has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. Due to her inability to take conventional medication for this, and surgical procedures are not conducted in our geographic location, I am seeking as much information right now on how to at least alleviate symptoms. Best Cat Ever lost a cancer fight recently. In his last couple of months, he was regularly urinating and sometimes defecating on various parts of my floor. (He had struggled with serious constipation at times, so when this happened, it was enough of an exciting development that I didn't really attempt to stop him.) I did my best with enzyme cleaners, but I wasn't able to keep up with it, and now the whole apartment stinks. What do I do? [more inside]
My cats' preferred barfatorium is the one carpeted room in the flat. Steam cleaning removes all the stains. I don't own a steam cleaner. Hope me please. [more inside]
seeking best options for replacing broken blinds.... [more inside]
My partner and I are moving across the country in a few months. We will be sharing a house and we both have beloved asshole pets we really really want to keep. I have a seven year old indoor/outdoor grey tabby and she has a 7 year old black labrador. I feel like it would be a big help to get them acquainted before the move, but I am not sure how to proceed. The time is drawing nearer and I need some help with this. Details (and picture link) on the flap! [more inside]
My lovely cat is now an only cat. What toys does she want to keep her amused during the day when I'm at work? [more inside]

My cat Binky has become "Blinky" - do I need to take her to the vet? YANMV [more inside]
I've been supporting a friend with major mental health issues through finding out his cat was sick. It's been a rough ride for both of us and now he's finally decided that it's time to put her down later today. He's asked me to help him so I thought it would be a good idea of I knew what's going to happen and what kind of things people found helpful to them at this sad time. [more inside]
Beloved cat needs teeth extracted due to Feline Oral Resorptive Lesions. How did this surgery go for your cat? I'm worried, and struggling to choose a vet. Considering cost, equipment, experience, and gut instinct. Which vet should I use? [more inside]
I'm adopting two five month old kittens. Yay! Now: what do I name them? Picture 1, Picture 2. The tabby is a girl, mild and pretty shy. The black and white is a boy, super playful and outgoing - he's going to be a trouble-maker! Name criteria inside. [more inside]
So, my cat is too big to fit in the small pet carrier that's allowed for Delta flights between nyc and montreal, so I can't take my cat as a carry-on. It doesn't look like I can take my cat with me via greyhound or amtrak, so, what are my alternatives?
My cat seems to have a cold -it seems like she has really bad nasal congestion and eye discharge. Should I take her to the vet? On the one hand I think no, because last time she had these symptoms (July) the vet said there was nothing she could do, and I don't want to stress her out for nothing when she's already uncomfortable and possibly prolong this. On the other hand "Making bad noises when breathing= doctor" seems like a pretty good guideline to follow in general. [more inside]
My neighborhood has a lot of outdoor cats, so I would like to add something to my indoor cat's tag to indicate that if someone encounters him alone outdoors it means that he is, indeed, lost. I don't like "Oh no, I'm lost!" since it'll be mostly me or my guests that see the tag the majority of the time, when it's not applicable -- but the only alternative I've come up with is "indoor cat," which is lacking the cute factor. What are some options in the 28 character range? [more inside]
I have a cat who loves the outdoors, but I am moving soon and she will have no option but to be indoors. I would like advice on how to handle this please, thank you. [more inside]
My cat and I are in a bedroom-door war. It has been a protracted and emotional conflict. Please help. [more inside]
My therapist suggested that I get an emotional support cat. I super want a cat, miss living with cats, my housemates think it's a good idea and are happy about a cat living with us. I live in San Francisco; I'm worried that my landlord will raise the rent by lots when it's time to renew the lease/force us to leave or something. Is this a supported fear? [more inside]
Is there a travel insurance that allows for cancellation in case of pet illness? [more inside]
Please share your experiences dealing with your cat's diagnosis of ocular (eye) melanosis or melanoma. Melanosis is the spreading of eye freckles on the iris, whereas melanoma is a tumor on the iris. These separate conditions can appear similar. Please share how your vet has diagnosed and treated either condition. [more inside]
I'm writing a short story in which one of the characters has a cat named Lucky. For contextual reasons, it would make sense if the cat was named Lucky in Spanish. I know the Spanish word for "lucky" is "afortunada", but would this make sense as a pet's name? Do people in Spanish-speaking countries name their animals Lucky, and if so, would those animals be named Afortunada or another word?
So, we are getting a cat. I have never owned a cat before, and the last time my partner did was a decade ago when he lived with his parents. I feel like I have a handle on how much this will cost but pretty much nothing else. I need, like, some really basic information. (A book? Is there a cats for dummies?) [more inside]
So this was me, but unfortunately I don't think I will have to worry about his long term companion. My surviving cat was *also* diagnosed with a different cancer. His was operable, and the healing process is okay, but he doesn't want to eat. I have 48 hours to get him eating normally before we go to a feeding tube. You are not my vet. My vet sees him so often he is officially sick of both of us, but maybe you have been successful in a similar case? Details inside. [more inside]
There has got to be a Japanese word/term (from anime maybe) for a girl/cat shape-shifter, right? [more inside]
The spouse and I both remember a comedian, probably in the 90s, making a joke about someone (probably Steven Adler) getting kicked out of Guns n Roses - it was just something like, "What do you have to do to get kicked out of Guns n Roses, freebase a cat?" [more inside]
My cat is very playful and meows for attention a lot. I’m wondering if maybe he would like a playmate but I'm afraid that he might hate it. [more inside]
I adopted my adorable and otherwise perfect adult cat about 6 months ago. She is a very vocal cat, and likes to meow about all kinds of stuff, which is generally pretty cute. However, she will not stop meowing at exactly 4:30 a.m. [more inside]

I like clocks. And soon I'll be moving into a new place and would like to get three stylish clocks to put in various locations of my place. I want clocks that aren't exactly run-of-the-mill. Think unusual, conversation-starting clocks such as the Kit-Cat Klock from the 1930s (probably one of the three clocks will be a vintage black or red Kit-Cat Klock). I'm mostly looking for wall clocks and both new and vintage clock recommendations are welcome.
Hi We recently did a diarrhea pcr panel and results that the cat has positive coronavirus which I hear is super common. I am stressed out about it since I hear that it can mutate to FIP which is fatal! My cats are 1 year and 2 months and healthy other than this blood result. Any thoughts or advice?
My memory is spotty-- it was an illustrated book about a mischievous red cat who was always getting in trouble. [more inside]
I am visiting my mother for a couple weeks; I'd like to take my adorable little Kokopelli with me. I'll be driving and it's about 9 hours. I want to make sure that (a) my kitty is safe and comfortable during the trip there and back, and that (b) he can have a nice visit once we arrive. [more inside]
One of our cats is a habitual out-of-litterbox toilet user. Due to this issue, we've had to put him in the garage at night when we can't keep an eye on him. However, we recently purchased a new car and plan to begin putting it in the garage - but we're not sure how to keep that cat - plus possible one other - from urinating on the car. Can anyone think of some solutions? Right now all I can think of is a cover or tarp.
How do I handle my poor cat's diarrhea? Specifically, how do I clean up the poor guy? [more inside]
It's been a while since this question has been asked (I think, unless my archive searching skills aren't so good), so here we are again: looking for recommendations for the best auto cat feeder out there. Parameters inside. [more inside]

We would love to rent out our condo in Vancouver—or participate in some kind of home exchange—but are reluctant to leave our cat with strangers. (And local cat sitters are quite expensive.) Is there a site, or a filter on an existing site, to find others in a similar situation? [more inside]
My 2-year-old cat is at the veterinarian’s office overnight. I’m afraid she may not have much time left. I’m looking for more information than I’ve got so far so I have a better idea of what I’m dealing with. [more inside]
So tomorrow we will be bringing home our new kitten Matthew Meowdock. This will be my first ever kitten, and I'm trying to make sure he integrates into our household (including our existing dog and cat) reasonably easily. Difficulty: Matthew is completely blind. If you have or have had a blind cat, what do you wish you'd known at first? [more inside]
I was wondering if any Metafilter crafters could help my wife out with a sewing problem she's having? Here's her question: "I make felt animals, usually of the jointed variety. I draw my own patterns and sew by hand, and it's been going fine up till now, but the last two creatures I made have both had a weird bunching at the neck. I've tried altering the width of the necks, the gussets, basting in advance, what-all, but I can't figure out what the problem is... [more inside]
This mustachioed fellow is a 2 year old who has been living at a shelter. He is chatty, gregarious and loves a lap to sit on. Any ideas? I am open to anything as long as it's not too long and complicated.
Our newly adopted retired racing greyhound is somewhat fixated on our cat - despite being tested as cat-safe or cat-trainable. What else can we do to help this? Is it salvageable? [more inside]
