Cuba and human rights.

Cuba and human rights.
Please ignore this if you think Cuba is a
1. Glorious Worker's Paradise or
2. 3rd largest prison on Earth (after Myammar and N. Korea)

I would like to know more about human rights for the average person in Cuba.
For instance, if a regular person (NOT a government employee, journalist, or someone w/ connections) could afford it, could they just leave and go to India for 2 weeks on vacation?
Buy a computer and get full access to the Web?
Visit a relative in Miami?
Open a bookstore and import what they want?
Start a blog discussing human rights in Cuba?
What actually happens if they try sailing a boat to Miami or Mexico?

Ideal Night in the Castro

Looking for an ideal night in the Castro for some gay friends visiting out of town. There are 6 of us in total. Here's the breakdown:

- 1 gay couple
- 2 straight couples
- All under 30
- Looking for a good representative night in the Castro where all can have a good time.

We have all had dinner, so we're just looking for good drinks, music, etc.

Disgusting Speedo Filter

Disgusting Speedo Filter...I found a great picture of Fidel Castro a couple of years ago. He was on a trip to the beach and wearing nothing but a bathing suit. Alas, my Google-fu is weak and I cannot find it again. Has anybody else seen this? If you need motivation, there's a class full of middle school social studies students who are depending on you!

I've recently been to Cuba and am very curious as to why the embargo continues. The cold war is over. Cuba is not a threat to the U.S. What am I missing?

Halloween has been cancelled. This is all.

Where should we go for our first Halloween in San Francisco? So the rumor is, Halloween in the Castro has been cancelled this year, after the shooting last year. There won't be street barricades or port-o-potties, and neighborhood businesses are being encourage to close up on Halloween. At 10, the police will start getting people off the streets. At midnight, they take out the fire hoses.

So I have a kick ass costume and would love to go to a party where there will be other awesome costumes. I thought the castro would be perfect. Would it still be? Various friends who live in downtown (but not the Castro) have variously told us that "Nobody will shut the Castro down" and "You'd be insane to go. Only the bad guys will be there"

Any advice from other denizens of SF? If it matters, I'd be going with a few buddies, male and female, but we're all on the petite side. If you don't think the Castro is a safe/interesting place to be, where should we go? We read about the Annual Exotic Erotic Ball but frankly that looks less like fun, awesome costumes and more like college chicks in negligees.

Suggestions? Recommendations? Happy Halloween!

I'd like to read a book about Castro's Cuba.

I'd like to read a book about Castro's Cuba. I’d like to read a book about Cuba.

Not about, like, their cash crops or whatever, but about how Castro got power and how he’s held it for all these years. How his regime has affected the Cuban people and how it’s affected Cuba’s international relations. Things like that.

I want it to be interesting bedtime reading. Even an historical fiction book would be cool.

I don’t want it to read like something I would have been assigned to read in high school social studies.

Any suggestions?
