I Want Less Money and No Power!

It's a great job - I'm incredibly lucky to have it - but I need help planning my exit. I want to be a software developer again. [more inside]

Providing Second Hand Negative Feedback

I'm the mentor/"manager" for a guy early in his career in my company. I've gotten routine feedback that his attitude/demeanor isn't really a culture fit, but other than that, he's a pretty good employee. We'd like to see him "shaped" into someone who is better fit. can females really have it all?

I'm 24 and about to embark on a lot of schooling for a career that I'm passionate about. The loans from said schooling will take me 10+ years to pay back, but my job security will be pretty much guaranteed and I'll have the flexibility to live where I want (i.e., somewhere with low cost of living). However, I'm certain that I want to have children and that I'll want to spend a lot of time with them. Is it silly to pursue a serious career? [more inside]

Reluctance to stay in academia: is this burnout or a sign?

I'm in the last stretch of my PhD in the UK, with a month left before I submit my thesis. I also have a full-time job as a lecturer. I enjoy and am energised by teaching but am increasingly reluctant to focus on research. Part of this is probably exhaustion from the PhD, and I know I shouldn't make any decisions now, but part of it feels like genuine dislike of the work and skepticism of its value. What do I need to consider, post-submission, in evaluating my future? [more inside]

Technical or Professional certifications a non-IT professional

Are there any technical or professional certificates that a non-IT professional could obtain that would be appealing to future employers? I'm in my mid-30s and all of my work experience has involved non-technical office work. I'm currently a manager (like, actual manager, not an office manager) of one of the branch offices of a small company and oversee a small staff, but I'm looking for a change of scenery. Other than an MBA, are there any certifications (whether professional or technical) that a beginner can obtain that would be attractive to potential employers? If it matters, I currently make in the mid $50s and would like my next job to pay the same or more. I know, I know... Thanks in advance!

Career question: how to transition out of nonprofit track?

I have worked for the federal government for five years (2 on Capitol Hill and 3 in SLC) and also for a well respected local nonprofit here in Salt Lake City, UT for the past two years. I'm Associate Director and things are good. However, unless I become Exec. Director there isn't much upward mobility. Plus, I wrote another question earlier this year about avoiding burnout, which is a problem with nonprofits, long hours, small staffs, etc. What I'm saying is I can't see working in the nonprofit world long term. I don't really see myself transferring to another nonprofit in town either. [more inside]

Business casual for an interview

I have an interview for a legal counsel position at a Silicon Valley tech company on Wednesday, and I've been advised by the recruiter that the dress code is "business casual, sport coat appropriate." This seems fairly specific, but dress codes are often a foreign language to me.
