Get me out of the non-profit world!

I currently work as a prospect researcher/prospect manager for the Development department at a large non-profit. I am unhappy in my position, and am starting to think I might want to get out of the non-profit world entirely as I've seen nothing but dysfunction in the organizations I have worked for. I need help figuring out how my skills could apply to another career. [more inside]

Recommend me books about work

I'm looking for books about how to manage your working life effectively. That could be anything from productivity, to managing stress, to interpersonal relationships, to broader musings on work-life balance or authenticity or ambition. Seasonal Job Ideas

I'm a bit of a career jumble... but to be honest, I like it that way, and I'm looking to brainstorm ways to keep the ball rolling. So far, I've got experience in Outdoor Education, Tour Guiding, Non-profits, and politics. I can move anywhere and I like something intellectually challenging and with people, and have been entertaining the idea of moving back in a more non-profit or activism direction. I am, however, nervous to give up my seasonal life and current travel habits. Open to all and any ideas, the crazier the better. [more inside]

How should I advance my career in molecular biology?

I'm 35 and I have a master's degree in biology, specialized in evolutionary bio and mycology. I have a couple of publications and many years of experience doing pcr-related things. Currently I work at two different places designing, testing, and implementing qPCR assays for pathogen detection. It's fun, but it doesn't pay very well. I'm starting to think maybe I should go back and get a doctorate. But, I'm not sure - and I'm not sure what field to get it in, if I do. [more inside]

Need life advice, could have been so much better, now a sad code monkey

I am turning 29 this month. I graduated 3.8 GPA with a undergraduate Business degree in 2010 from a good university but then went through about 4 career changes in the last 6 years. I thought this kind of "soul-searching" would help me explore a lot of different areas and find myself. But in fact, I'm so miserable about the fact that I'm so behind and have not built anything worthwhile in the last 6 years. Today, I'm stuck at a uninspiring coding job out in the suburbs and just am staying with it because it pays the bills but I know I can be so much better. I see my peers who are now graduating with their MBAs + PhDs from Columbia and Cornell and getting married or just doing amazing things with their lives in general and feel terribly behind, have so many regrets, extremely depressed. How can I turn my life around? [more inside]

How do you make it work at a job you hate?

I hate my current job, Job A, but I've been very good at it and they are trying to retain me. In the meanwhile, I applied for and got very far along in the process with another company- Job B. That process allowed me to be more honest with myself about unhappy I was in Job A. I didn't get Job B, and in the meanwhile Job A has made a very lucrative offer. Should I try and make this work? Best job I’ve ever hated

My job is, by most objective standards, terrific. I work from home (which I like); have flexible hours; overtime is okay’d whenever requested; boss likes me and thinks I’m brilliant. And the pay is more than I’ve ever made in my life (which puts me at just under the low end of middle-class income). Yay. What’s not good: the work I do, which includes an increasing number of tasks I dislike intensely – enough that I’ve thought not only, “I’d rather work with raw sewage than do this,” but “hey, I wonder if that guy I used to know who worked at the sewage plant still works there? Nah, they probably don’t pay this well for untrained labor. (Could I get trained?)” [more inside]
