Step 1: Ecology PhD Step 2: ??? Step 3: Profit!

I'm a recently-minted PhD with a focus in forest restoration / forest ecology. Most of the jobs I'm qualified for that are even kinda related to my studies pay worse than going back to being an admin assistant. I want to make at least $40K. I don't want to move (so no moderately-paying postdocs). I am kinda burned out on science. I am kinda burned out on physically-demanding fieldwork. Help me make money. Or convince me that paying my dues as a field or lab tech will pay off in a few years. [more inside]

What should I do to get back on track with my life?

I work in the technology field and have ended up in two jobs where the interviewer assured me the positions were not call centers when they turned out to be just that. I began to feel disillusioned about my career and if I picked the wrong career. The stress from not knowing what I should do with my career, myself, my life, as well as my boyfriend's depression led me to experience burn-out and become depressed. [more inside]

No, but seriously. How do you start freelancing/get a portfolio going?

I feel like I have half-assedly asked people this for a long time and gotten more encouragement than answers. Meanwhile I have written for a living for years, just in ways that are overly specialized and don't yield much you can show people as a portfolio. Call it a resolution if you must, but I'm pretty determined to write more in the new year and get paid for it. Where do I start? [more inside]

Need life advice, could have been so much better, now a sad code monkey

I am turning 29 this month. I graduated 3.8 GPA with a undergraduate Business degree in 2010 from a good university but then went through about 4 career changes in the last 6 years. I thought this kind of "soul-searching" would help me explore a lot of different areas and find myself. But in fact, I'm so miserable about the fact that I'm so behind and have not built anything worthwhile in the last 6 years. Today, I'm stuck at a uninspiring coding job out in the suburbs and just am staying with it because it pays the bills but I know I can be so much better. I see my peers who are now graduating with their MBAs + PhDs from Columbia and Cornell and getting married or just doing amazing things with their lives in general and feel terribly behind, have so many regrets, extremely depressed. Best job I’ve ever hated

My job is, by most objective standards, terrific. I work from home (which I like); have flexible hours; overtime is okay’d whenever requested; boss likes me and thinks I’m brilliant. And the pay is more than I’ve ever made in my life (which puts me at just under the low end of middle-class income). Yay. What’s not good: the work I do, which includes an increasing number of tasks I dislike intensely – enough that I’ve thought not only, “I’d rather work with raw sewage than do this,” but “hey, I wonder if that guy I used to know who worked at the sewage plant still works there? Nah, they probably don’t pay this well for untrained labor. (Could I get trained?)” [more inside]
