Career question: how to transition out of nonprofit track?

I have worked for the federal government for five years (2 on Capitol Hill and 3 in SLC) and also for a well respected local nonprofit here in Salt Lake City, UT for the past two years. I'm Associate Director and things are good. However, unless I become Exec. Director there isn't much upward mobility. Plus, I wrote another question earlier this year about avoiding burnout, which is a problem with nonprofits, long hours, small staffs, etc. What I'm saying is I can't see working in the nonprofit world long term. I don't really see myself transferring to another nonprofit in town either. [more inside]

How can I make money now that I (will) have a college degree?

Worked full time in assorted office jobs since 2004 while going to community college. In 2012, I started a (part-time) degree at University of Pennsylvania and in Fall 2015 (maybe Spring 2016) I will graduate with a psychology bachelor's degree. I have about 20K in debt and make less than 40k per year in a job that is not really a career. How can I transition to a career where I make at least 50k per year, preferably more? How to keep track of names and faces to build relationships at a large c

Remembering who someone is has been a roadblock to successful networking in the past – but in my new job, I have more people to remember than ever. I’d like to know what you, as someone who also has trouble remembering names and faces, has done to keep track of a large network. I am not looking for mnemonic tricks to remember one or several specific names. I’m hoping more for something like “Everyone I meet goes in my electronic rolodex that I update with X information after each meeting.” [more inside]

I can quit my miserable job — but should I?

How do I handle this interview, for a position that would be a stretch?

The company in question is a small, successful tech startup in a college town in a rural region. In an unusual fit of courage, I wrote and sent in a verbose letter of application for a development internship. I'm already regretting this bout of self-esteem, because I'm not that qualified, and though I made that clear in my letter, they've asked me in for a "short talk". I have no idea what to expect. Business casual for an interview

I have an interview for a legal counsel position at a Silicon Valley tech company on Wednesday, and I've been advised by the recruiter that the dress code is "business casual, sport coat appropriate." This seems fairly specific, but dress codes are often a foreign language to me. Can you explain what I should wear - and ideally, do so as if you're explaining to an alien with no knowledge of men's fashion? (I exaggerate, but only a little.) Like, it's crossed my mind that I can simply wear a suit without a tie, but maybe that's horribly wrong? Thanks.

Hired to come in and organize your online/email life - is this a job?

So, there exists such a thing as professional declutterers and organizers, who'll come to your home or office and help you get your stuff together. My question: is there an analogous gig where someone exclusively helps someone else get their personal email/digital/workflow life together (no other apartment/home organizing involved)? Resume Objective Statement for someone looking to switch careers

This question isn't for myself so much as it is for someone I know very well who is looking for a job that will hopefully be a radical departure from her previous career. For the sake of argument, let's refer to her previous job as a position within what I will call the "bartgage industry" from here on forward. The challenge for her will be to frame her resume in such a way that effectively illustrates her prior experience while also emphasizing her desire never to work in the field of bartgage ever again (so help her God). Should I move from private sector to public sector for work/life balance

Hi MetaFilter, Putting it out for the group to help me weigh the pro's and con's of a career move. I am 44 years old, marketing professional with 10 years experience in health care marketing communication. I recently got my MBA last year and got recruited to go to another large Chicago health care system. The new job pays more and is OK but we are going through a reorg and merger and my position will change going forward. My current boss is leaving the organization and said that he is putting me forward for a better position with more responsibility going into the reorg but it is hard to trust that this will happen since that is all going to be in flux. About a month ago I applied for a federal marketing communication project manager position with the General Services Administration at the Federal Acquisition Service and this past Friday I was offered the job as a GS-13 Step One and they want my answer on Monday.
